I've been thinking about this and finally decided to seek opinions from you guys... First of all, I'm preparing for CAT '11 and pursuing BE (IT), III Year. Now, it's something personal, as in related to my personality. I'm a methodical, conventional person who generally goes by the book. I can't think out of the box and that's where I trail in GDs and general discussions. Like, if I'm given a topic, I don't tend to explore all dimensions at once. My thought process isn't like a manager, nothing exceptional and different! I've been consistent in my academics and score above 80% in almost every exam. But again, I've not taken any mock CATs and am not sure where do I stand or how should I rate myself! I'm confused and need to take a decision before it's too late. Can persons like me become successful in corporate arena? Or should I go for those lower-level management jobs that involve regular work? I cannot change what's inside my head! Can a thought process ever be cultivated? How should I train myself as if such things dwindle me from my target, and plummet my confidence, I shall never be able to achieve anything! Totally confused, please help. :(
First of all bro , thinking out of the box is skill , that is achieved by reading a lot ,learning from past experiences , you wont be able to think about all the points or sides topic , unless you understand the topic well, for that level of understanding , you must read a lot , a variety of topics , economics, sociology, political . Its habit u need to cultivate , believe me it can be learned
Secondly dont judge yourself , so soon on such high parameters, dont make judgements before exploring your limits, only way you can do that is to focus on your goals and work hard :)Just think whether u really want to do MBA or is it because your friend wants to, or your parents want you to do.
You have an above avg intellect level , you just need to focus the right way, make books , editorials ,and magazines your friends , more you read more you learn , more you expand the boundaries of your knowledge, you will get better as the journey goes on
i wanted to know if there are any skills one should possess for being a successful manager on the surface level i am strong and believe that i have to and i will to do it....but as i introspect i feel i lack the soft skills required which demoralizes me.....the environment around me is also responsible for it as i haven't got a chance to test myself in handling pressure situations and tasks
Hi Buddy,
I do not believe in getting to the definition of good manager given in books ... in my opinion, it is the ability to understand people around you , happenings around you , ability to well connect with people, ability to let yourself accessible to everyone , ability to analyze situations , being unbiased , being true, being able to add value to your employer as well as people working as your peers and subordinates ... are few thins which make a person good manager ... and if you become good in what you do , the word 'successful' will come and add itself infront of your name itself ๐
As far as issue with soft skills is considered, i would suggest to start working on them .. there are many resources where you can find ways to improve yourself... don't try to just read these means rather try to bring them in application in real life when you interact with people around you .
Coming to getting deterred due to environment at work place , i will say to just avoid those who are responsible for deterring you and try to live in the manner you want . People around you who deter you today will be the first ones to come in future and praise you , appreciate you when you achieve success.
So, keep working and ignore those who stop you from achieving what you aim at ! Varun
Hi, Umm, Sometime ago i left a job offer from Amazon in Bangalore. I need to know if the decision was wrong or right because such offers keep coming and I am unsure if I am doing the right thing or not.
I need to know how much would Amazon pay to a HR person with 1 year of experience. The position was at Bangalore and it was for a management graduate with a management degree (bachelors or masters) who had one year of experience.
What is the best annual income estimate for such a job?

Hey ppl, can any1 guide me with some banking course. I'm pursuing MBA fin. But i think some extra certi will help getting into particular profile.
I'm nt interested in Investment banking. Suggest some non-capital markets profiles. Also tell abt the opportunities available.
Plz tell whether CAIIB/JAIIB courses are useful. Which course are available. CWA/CA/CS are tough. CFA i'm nt interested.
CAIIB/JAIIB are good for understanding banking...they are more useful when ur working in PSU bank..u get some Rs. 1300 extra if you complete JAIIB and Rs. 2600 if u complete both JAIIB+CAIIB. CS is not difficult..CA/CFA are difficult...CWA no idea... U can go for NCFM courses..debt and mutual funds modules are good and hv some recognition..

What exactly is the problem?being conventional & methodical is not bad..whatever little i have understood.."Thinking out of the box" is required for Marketing jobs wherein u need to come up with innovative product, promotional campaigns etc etc...U can def go for Fin jobs.... Clearing GDs is an art which can definitely be cultivated...Even i was very bad in GDs but then i learnt the tricks of trade & m still learning..... Whether u can be successful as a manager is too far-fetched a question...as far as getting into MBA -- 1. U need to give mock cats 2. u need to prepare for GD Then let the process for MBA selection decide for itself if u fit in the shoes as a Manager... And FINALLY...dont think so much yaar...keep trying...things will fall in place.......Get out of this pessimistic mode and start doing things.....
I am Computer engineer 2010 passout Don't have a job want to pursue MBA but in big big dilemma as I am currently staying at jabalpur and offcampus are begin organizing at pune ,bangalore etc so I have to leave home but as only 2.5-3 months are left for CAT 10 People say you must not ignore Job opportunities as CAT is not reliable (I am also agree with them as at CAT 09 my computer didn't run) now if I leave home then it would take some time to settle down,so if I go to new place my CAT preparations may be effected . so should I move to new place now or after appearing for CAT & all Exams till DEC; but from DEC job would be not easy. as per mine opinion I must first look for a job & then give my best shot for CAT if time left for CAT.
First go for a job then cat..ur a computer engineer and IT industry is booming...apply to infy nd all...

I've 4 years of work-ex in manufacturing industry as an engineer. I am planning to apply ISB & some US b-schools. Last year I applied to ISB, got interview call but couldn't make to the final admission. I was grilled on "why MBA" question. I mentioned financial consultant as my post mba short term goal & enterpreneurship as long term goal. I was not able to convince manufacturing -> Finance -> enterpreneurship transition. I m fascinated about stocks (I do trading), budgeting, statiscal analysis (Gud %le in Quant & DI-LR in CAT), that's why i mentioned financial consultant as my post mba goal.(moreover frustration from the current job also add to it .However till now I m mostly involved in core technical work & some statiscal analysis. Could u plz suggest me some feasible post mba options? transition from manufacturing to finance is possible post mba? Please suggest me career options in finance post mba making the most of my current work-ex.

Hi Ishakmohd,
If the process remains the same to that of last year, you will not have to be necessarily present while getting the voucher. Just make sure that your voucher and receipt are safe and sound till the exam atleast. However, this is going by last year's process. The official bulletin on the 22nd will give us more information about the process.
Is there any special labour law for notice period during probation period.
Since probation period is a time for both employee and employer to evaluate each other, well the purpose is mostly for the latter one, I am assuming it is for the former also...
Is it all upto a company to decide on the notice period??
My comp has 6months of probation period, and after 3 months I see a need to quit...so knowledgeable people kindly reply.
Hi all, This is my very first post. I have job offers from TCS and SaharaNext. Now i am in a dilemma as to which company i should choose. While SaharaNext consists of a young team from where i can get a lot of exposure, experience and training on a whole lot of stuffs, TCS is an ocean and i doubt whether i'll be trained only in a single platform. I am not bothered about the pay offered. My main concern is the quality and diversity of my training. P.S. I'll be pursuing my MS after a couple of years so work exp might give an edge over others in getting assistantships :) Welcome to Sahara Next
Dear Guys, I am currently working in Saudi Arabia and I am intending to appear for CAT 2010. Today, as the CAT notification is out, I came to know where I can have the CAT vouchers from. I have some doubts regarding the registration.
1. Is it okay if one of my friends in India buy the voucher for me or is it necessary to have my physical presence? 2. Is it necessary to provide the graduation certificate/marksheet to obtain the voucher? 3. In case if the phone number is needed for contact purpose, which phone number is recommended? My number in Saudi or my home number in India? 4. On purchasing the voucher in my name, I can register through Indian Institutes of Management by entering the voucher number. In that case my friend can scratch the voucher and send the number to me via email. Is that okay or is it necessary that I should have the voucher with me? 5.What all particulars needs to be given while purchasing the voucher?

MY MAIN CONCERN IS THAT, I AM INTENDING TO COME TO INDIA JUST FOR THE EXAM. SO HOW CAN I EXECUTE THAT PLAN BY SITTING HERE IN SAUDI? all my academic certificates are currently with me..
