Hi I have done btech in electronics and telecom and now working in a good company since 1 yr. I want to pursue MS in my feild, but I have been hearing that doing mba would be better. How good is the scope after doing MS? After MS, will the growth be slow in a comp? Is it really difficult getting good package or top positions in companies after doing MS as compared to mba? I am more inclined towards the technical side like r&d.; Also how good is the scope in India after MS. Can someone please guide me on these issues? I have come across some other threads relating to this issue but was not able to find answers to my satisfaction..Thanks.

from my exp I can tell, follow ur interest and then anything else
You yourself have written in the query: "I am more inclined towards the technical side like r&d;"...... then why are you confused? May be, Birbal13 is right here.
Next, as far as I know, and after seeing some real life examples, I can say that after MS, the scope is better in the 'outside World' than India.
Yeah, package will be less as compared to that of an MBA, but you will be doing what you truly desire.
Secondary School Leaving Certificate(Chennai, India) 87.8% (March 2003)
Currently working at kumaran systems private limited, chennai as a sofware developer. (1 year)
I am thinking of doing a MBA through correspondence/distance education. Since i like to continue my career in the field of information technology. So i would like to know whether a correspondence/distance education MBA add a value to my career. ? If so which university is the best for it ? I may sound amateurish but please bear it . Any suggestions?

Omg..!!.. A person from my college... ๐ ๐
Anyway distance education MBA will add value to your profile but it can never match up with a full time MBA. You can have a look at distance education programs from Symbiosis, IGNOU etc. Even some IIMs have part time distance education programs I guess.
However, I have absolutely no clue regarding which university is the best....
I want to appear for civil services but the thing i want to know can it be done with a full time job or a full time course (since i think backing for such exam is needed ) ?I have 5 years limit in my hand according to the age criteria 30
I just joined PG. I am taking CAT 2010 while working as an analyst at a leading I-Banking team in India.
The work hours are crazy and leave me with very less time to prep.
The choices are:
1) To try CAT 2010 and 2011 along with CFA (which I should complete by June 2012). If I get in say in 2011, I can go to an IIM with 3 years front-end IBD experience and a CFA Level 3
2) Forget about CAT and focus on the job. Complete the CFA, shift to a non-profit job in 2011 Q4 and then make a solid pitch to foreign B Schools in 2012 (4 year work ex)
Goals: To get into private equity in India. Since PEs pick 2-3 people from each IIM each year I don't know if I have a good shot there. I am dealing with them in some deals and find the work nice & rewarding (yes, better than IB)
Hi, I am new to PG. I am planning to give CAT, XAT and SNAP this year. I started preparing just couple of weeks back. I need suggestions on which b-schools to target and the exams to take.
I will just brief my profile. Work exp: 13 months( by the time i join it will be 21 months) Grad(BBM): 82% 12th: 93% 10th: 86%.
I have good extra curricular record too. Have won various BQuizzes(incl Tata Crucible and ET in the classroom).
But when it comes to CAT and MBA i am always confused.
I am good at LRDI and average in Verbal and Quants(sometimes i do good in quants too). As i have just 3 months left for CAT and 4 months for other exams, I need some suggestions to kick start mentally.
On basis of these mock scores, I think I would be able to get somewhere around 95-98 percentile in Actual CAT. I am having an average Bcom profile, have won a couple of awards in debate competitions.
I want to take Finance in my MBA as I think that is where my good accounting skills will be of most use.
I have also heard a lot about NCFM examinations. And I noticed that they have recently launched courses in Equity Research and Market Risk (NSE - NCFM Registration Form)
I am working for a software product development company and earning 6 lacs per annum. My total experience is exactly 3 years. I happy & satisfied with my work and package. I am pretty confident and comfortable with my technical skills (have few certifications as well) but MBA was always my dream (a manager with good technical skills). I gave the CAT exam last year and scored 80. I didn't have any time to prepare at all, same is the case this year too. So I am bit worried if MBA is the right track for me.
How do i go about this? I don't have time for preparation at all. I get really tired after work and sometimes don't get time even on the weekends too.
Also, I have another question, is an executive MBA as good as a normal full time MBA. Which one should I opt.

Thanks a lot in advance.
you say u want to become a manager with good technical skills..and it is always possible in IT to get into the PM track..MBA is all about common sense..you wont acquire some high tech skills.. yea.. some frameworks and jargons to bamboozle others....so dont unnecessarily stress urself.. ..I think for u an executive is a good option cos..u will finish the course quicker..and u can get back to IT soon..also with a MBA you may be absorbed into a biz consul/PM role directly..depending on exp

Thanks for ur reply.
I agree that mba is all abt common sense, we often read this almost every where. But I feel that for a manager its imp. to have good technical knowledge as well, be it IT or any other sector. This is b'coz, it'll be really helpful while administering his projects, once he has technical knowledge he will be able to set realistic goals & deadlines, manage risks etc (u can fill in such hitech mgrial fundas ๐ ) since he knows abt the technical difficulties.
Anyways reg. the exec mba, I have googled and found out some details, i still need to work hard to get atleast abv 92-93 to get into a decent school. God help me.
I've been thinking about this and finally decided to seek opinions from you guys... First of all, I'm preparing for CAT '11 and pursuing BE (IT), III Year. Now, it's something personal, as in related to my personality. I'm a methodical, conventional person who generally goes by the book. I can't think out of the box and that's where I trail in GDs and general discussions. Like, if I'm given a topic, I don't tend to explore all dimensions at once. My thought process isn't like a manager, nothing exceptional and different! I've been consistent in my academics and score above 80% in almost every exam. But again, I've not taken any mock CATs and am not sure where do I stand or how should I rate myself! I'm confused and need to take a decision before it's too late. Can persons like me become successful in corporate arena? Or should I go for those lower-level management jobs that involve regular work? I cannot change what's inside my head! Can a thought process ever be cultivated? How should I train myself as if such things dwindle me from my target, and plummet my confidence, I shall never be able to achieve anything! Totally confused, please help. ๐

First thing, how comfortable your parents are with you going for an MBA?
Second thing, how comfortable will you be doing an MBA and also after that?
Just getting into an MBA because you want to get out of medicine is only one part of the answer. I think it would be better if you talk to few people who are in B-Schools/passed out of one, and get to know how the life actually is. They need not be medicos. You can always ask them for some insights about how life at a bschool is. After you get to know about the experience, ask yourself if you still want to do an MBA. If it is a yes, you can start your prep. First convince yourself why you want to do an MBA. After that, things should be fine :)
PS: You haven't done any leadership oriented tasks does not mean you cannot get into one. Life during an MBA teaches you all. It's how much you can learn that's important ๐

thanks a lot sir for your response i told my parents and there reaction was positive.....they want me to be happy yes sir i have talked to some people who are in reputed B schools....inquired about the daily life, class environment , study pattern , job etc.. it all sounded good and interesting to me as you are a doctor too .....you can understand how crucial this step is..... the problem i am facing sir is lack of confidence.......the environment is my college is uninspiring......so it becomes tough at times to fully convince myself and stay focussed

Buddy,
Positive attitude is what all matters when we lack confidence at any stage in life... it is this attitude which brings us back to the state where we regain confidence in ourselves !
Now, positive attitude is much more than a word... it is easy said than done .. for being a person with positive attitude , try to see what you have rather than what you don't have !
In your case, you have the 'will' to do mba and try to make it a motivating factor for you and do not let the environment in your college deter you from your 'will'. Neglect all such factors around you which are of no use and are not in sync with your aim .
For succeeding in life, we have to overlook many things and focus on few things which we feel are those where our happiness lies... hence, i suggest you to lift your spirits and start working to achieve your aim

thanks a lot sir for the moral support i wanted to know if there are any skills one should possess for being a successful manager on the surface level i am strong and believe that i have to and i will to do it....but as i introspect i feel i lack the soft skills required which demoralizes me.....the environment around me is also responsible for it as i haven't got a chance to test myself in handling pressure situations and tasks
