Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Dear Guys,
I am currently working in Saudi Arabia and I am intending to appear for CAT 2010. Today, as the CAT notification is out, I came to know where I can have the CAT vouchers from. I have some doubts regarding the registration.

1. Is it okay if one of my friends in India buy the voucher for me or is it necessary to have my physical presence?
2. Is it necessary to provide the graduation certificate/marksheet to obtain the voucher?
3. In case if the phone number is needed for contact purpose, which phone number is recommended? My number in Saudi or my home number in India?
4. On purchasing the voucher in my name, I can register through Indian Institutes of Management by entering the voucher number. In that case my friend can scratch the voucher and send the number to me via email. Is that okay or is it necessary that I should have the voucher with me?
5.What all particulars needs to be given while purchasing the voucher?

guys.. I am in a place where I cannot ask any body around me regarding this. PG was really helpful to me in every doubts that I had regarding CAT. MY MAIN CONCERN IS THAT, I AM INTENDING TO COME TO INDIA JUST FOR THE EXAM. SO HOW CAN I EXECUTE THAT PLAN BY SITTING HERE IN SAUDI? all my academic certificates are currently with me..

Cheers
Ishak

Well.. I am trying to answer your queries to the best of my knowledge.

1. Your friend can buy the voucher in India.
2. Your graduation certificate is not required to buy the voucher.
3. You home number in India will do.
4. Your friend can send the voucher number through email.
5. No particulars are required while purchasing the voucher.

This was the scenario last year. I believe things wouldn't change by leaps and bounds this year.
hello puys

please tell me the future prospects of MBA from CAT/GMAT
after BANK PO ( min 2,3 years of service).

Thanks in advance
Rajat

Hi Puys/Alumni,
I think you might have heard this many times but anyways here it goes.. I'm a software engineer, working with reputed telecom solution company. I have six years of work-ex and currently i'm leading a team. I want to do MBA to diversify myself into IT consultancy.

I'm confused, considering the experience and opportunity cost, do you think doing 2 year MBA from IIMs will make sense for me or should i try for GMAT? As i've worked all these years in IT field, apart from MBA in Systems, what are the options i can explore so that my work-ex counts.

Hope someone who has been through this dilemma could suggest/guide me.

Cheers!!!

Hello all
I'm a new user over here pursuing my MBA from Infinity Business School, Gurgaon. I recently gave a MBTI test. The career which my result shows me is very different. Has anyone of you all present over here in forums tried this test and followed it ?

Hi All,
I am a Comp Sci engg graduated in 2010 from MSU, Baroda.
I am currently working in a small IT firm in Mumbai and will be writing MBA entrance tests this year. My doubt is 'does experience from a big company considered higher in comparison to experience from a startup/small firm' when we go for GD/PIs ?

I had given the MBTI test once, but from that i came to know about my personality traits and no inference was given as to what should my career be ..

Since you are 2010 pass-out, so at the time you'll reach the GD/PI stage of any good college, you won't be having more than 1 years of experience. In general the top colleges counts experience which is generally in excess of 1-2 years.More over big names does look good in the resume but then its finally the nature of work and you role in that which is counted in the end.So rest be assured that if you are going for GD/PIs,working in a small or big company would not make much of a difference!!

Hello people... i need help badly on this one

This is a query regarding my profile.

->I graduated from a reputed engg. college in 2008, in the following part of 2008 i was busy getting a ccna certification. Then from jan 2009 i started applying for my MS abroad. In July 2009 i proceeded with my masters abroad.

->But after i did one semester there, i felt the course was not taking me to the goal i had in mind career-wise.. so i took a diploma certificate and discontinued after 1 sem at the end of 2009.

->From january 2010 onwards i tried my luck in various companies.. got work with ntpc alstom, but discontinued after a period of 3 months since it was contract work. So all i am doing now is prepare for cat 2010,

so puys... any tips or advice you could give me, ill be thankful. On what lines i can forge a good case for selection at the PI.

Would advise you to just take some time, sit back and think a bit about what you want to do ahead. Just don't keep trying and hopping around, could be taken negatively by people, whether they be panelists in your GD/PI or be interviewers for some company. If you think MBA is the thing for you, go for it full throttle and once you do crack CAT, think how you would justify your period after graduation and do accordingly.

If however you feel it would be better to do a job for now, look for a job which interests you and atleast stick to it for a decent period of time, say about 1.5-2 years. Anything below one year, and you won't learn much, because there's always a learning period, in whichever company or college you go and in that period, there'll always be times when you would like to chuck it away. Just resist that and continue but first and foremost, think atleast about the near future.

I know it's easier said than done, but you'll surely be better off by doing it now rather than later.

Hi Guys,
I am currently working in Saudi and also preparing for CAT 2010. The books that I have is 4 Arun Sharma books for CAT (for QA, DI&LR;, VA&RC; and the complete CAT digest). I've been going through these books and found that I am fair in VA&RC;, Average in DI&LR; and poor in QA. Books and the internet are the only resources that I've got. Sometimes I am circumspect and I am worried whether I am on the right track...
1. Is there any other suggested books at this point of time?(espicially for Quants)
2. What could be the best recommended way of approach at this point of time as there are only two months left for the CAT?(considering my strengths and weaknesses)
3. I am a bit confused which one to choose as anyone can see a lot of resources on CAT in the internet. I just need a proper recommendation in the layman's term..

Thanks

Ishak

Hi Sagar,

Don't worry about the fact that you are from hindi Medium. You need not be bogged down because you are not able to join any coaching institute. There are many successful people who are from Villages and who have done well in life and today are in good positions in big companies. First important thing is to have the self confidence that you can do it ! For CAT prep you have so many online sites and Pagalguy itself is one of the best websites for you to prepare for CAT. There are many threads for CAT prep on PG..Start following these threads and also try taking up a few online mock test to build your confidence.

All the very Best !!

Hi,

Let me answer your question one by one,

1. There are noo fixed books as such. Any good books on Quants you can always grab a copy (Quants by RS Agarwal is a good book). There are also many online forums for quants questions. Follow the Quants thread on pagalguy. That will definitely help you a lot.

2. Since there are only 2 months left, try improving on the areas that you are weak at and strenghten your hold on areas on which you are good at. Try taking a few mock tests online which will help you know where you stand and where should you improve.

3. Based on my personal experience, I would suggest you to follow the threads on pagalguy for various areas. Because this is the time where maximum discussions happen and you will get a fair idea on whats happening around.
Caught in the wrong job ? --- YES!!!!

But MO***er.com isn't helping out . !!

Hey, I am working with a technology start up "mnc" as a software developer since the past 1.3 years .

I had a roller coaster of a ride(professional , actually personally also :P) till now, and I need any help, advice I can get.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
I was hired as a java resource, for a dot com start up for the domestic market ie India the start up was something like foodiebay.com .

Initially I was working on the code(java, html, css etc etc) (say for a month) then graduated(:)) to the business side of the portal (the transition was very quick and natural)

The business side included handling a couple of vendors, collecting data from around the country, then seo(keyword analysis, analytics, webmasters tools etc etc), marketing(competitor analysis, writing some content for the site,a successful campaign(offline)), and then a very successful stint at sales ( signed 3 clients in my first 3 attempts), and of course coding as well simultaneously.

some achievements:
Alexa rank of 20,000 In India ( I guess decent enough for a one man show ?)
page 1 for a few competitive keywords ( got 78 % of unique visitors via search engines)
Successfully closed sales for 3 clients.

The team was 2 technical guys ( 5,2 yrs exp) , 1 mba guy ( vp marketing 10 yrs exp{not in a dot com though}) and yours truly.

This was the time where I thought ( why does everybody crib so much about work :P:P)

but then my company started getting a lot of business from the us and uk , and the company grew from 6 people in June 2009 to say 30 currently , and of course the food portal was closed down , and I was PROMOTED to a hardcore software developer in the e commerce domain working on IBM WEBSPHERE COMMERCE since the past 4-5 months (I've realized why people crib about work) !! .

So ofcourse now I need a career shift,to which post i dont know ? is it an assistant product manager ? or a business development guy ? or a marketing executive ?

{My company appreciates my business acumen and sales skills, but cannot put me in the sales team because we have our sales/marketing team in the US and not looking at penetrating the Indian ecommerce market right now.
}

Posted my cv on naukri, monster, and its been a month, nothing great came up.

Getting a decent pay for a 1 year exp guy, respected in the company for my business acumen, hate my job as a developer and don't see myself as a project manager or a business analyst, as my name says inaloop :).

Any help, advice would be highly appreciated.

Ps: I have thought of mba, but not as a cushion for my confusion, but only and only as a specialization.

Thanks.

hey puys!!!

i am in my final year of engg...will give cat this year..
i m really leading stressful days..m really screwed ...my engg grades are too low....although i do score above 95 in aimcat....i got to hav atleast 50 %in my engg..but somehow i am lagging behind at 49.8...but m pretty sure will make up above 50 by the time i get the final degree(thanks to marking system of univ)..my problem is if i m not having 50 by the time i m called for gd n pi,is it the end of world for me?can they really oversee it?? do they really calculate marks at the time of pi as if by calculator..because i m lagging by 0.2....whr does my future lie?i m late to recognize...engg is not my cup of tea...i know low scores at grad are not really welcome..but i hav to make it...whatvr it takes............HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how does b-school interview panels perceive candidates who joined Bank PO after engg.? i'm in final year B.Tech, not placed yet, but will hopefully be placed by the end of final year (placements in my univ. is restricted to 8th sem, phunny!). i was thinking of giving it a shot after graduation if i get some time before joining.

honestly, i'm not too keen about PO, but then again its the same with IT. i'm considering it only as an alternative. i know its not as easy as getting placed in IT but still curious.

P.S: core companies don't come to our campus, IT is mai baap here
