ISB 2008-2009 Selected for Interview

All,
Got admitted to the class of 08-09. Congrats to all the other who made it and ATB for those who have their interviews scheduled.

The round 2 in pune is now done!

I had only one person interview me...!!! there were 3 members in all and the other two were on the other panel. dunno which way that swings my chances or what i should infer from it...but well the interview was very jovial and free flowing.

I come from an elearning background, not a very common profession, so the interview started with Sanjay the adcom guy, asking me to describe my industry. then he moved on to my role and the typical processes we follow at work. he asked about my contribution to making a project sucessful...since i am a PM.

We then moved on to my background, which is in humanities, and how i became a PM..ie the shift from the humanities to management. i described the trasition smoothly.
Then the usual...why MBA.....how would that help. i described my plans for the future where the MBA fit in nicely and appropriately.

I was asked about attrition in the industry i work in and how i help control it. upon elaboration, he asked me how i ensure that the quality of the deliverables is not affected if someone leaves suddenly.

i have long list of EC activities and hobbies. i waS asked to elaborate on those. Then was asked how i apply those in really life. one ec activity i mentioned was trekking and how it helped me organise, lead, make fast decisions, etc. He tried to contradict me by saying trekking is really about following a map, so there could not be difficult situation to handle anyway. i stuck to my stand and illustrated by giving him an example.

Any questions for us? i had a couple.

my interview started late and almost took 35-40 min...did not really see the time. But i was pretty satisfied with the way it went. More in feb now.

all the very best to those who are now appearing for interviews!!!

hi doodes.....
congrats for all who win the iift and all.......
i wanna know more about the gd topic "Engineers are wasting their talent by going through management education"
can any one give me a good out look of this topic?

Thought I ll share my interview experience here as well (atleast the part that I still remember)

Panel consisted of i alum and one adcom member. First that they asked me was how my profile changes since the last time i applied (am a reapplicant). 5 mins on my answer to this question. Then a question on how different i perceive my current company to my previous company. Then was asked to do a SWOT analysis on them both. Few drills on that (basically why I considered them the strengths and weaknesses). Asked about the difference b/w leaders, managers and executives. Also, asked to identify who playes the above roles in a cricket team. I also remember a couple of questions being asked about my work and how I displayed a few qualities that I had written about in my essays. And my interview was winded off with my question to the panel.

Duration: 20-25 mins.

Hope this helps.

hey,

does anyone have an idea bout this-
1. how many seats approx are filled up by round 1 applicants? (% terms).

2. Also are the no. of applicants in round2 greater than round 1?

3. What percent of the applicants are shortlisted for interview?

4. How many seats (approx again) are the round 2 applicants basically contesting for-so whats the seat-applicant ratio both in round 1 and 2??

Reply Asap

Thanks guys!

If only anyone outside of adcom had an idea ...which I seriously doubt.

But frankly the answers to these questions have no relevance to how one would prepare for an interview (if that is what you were referring to), I would still put in the same effort πŸ˜‰

Hi Sandeep,

Congrats for your good GMAT score...
I am planning to do my GMAT...
Since i am starting from scratch, could u please give me some suggestions on this...
How long do u need to prepare completely for GMAT ( 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 months)
Do i need to take any coaching classes...if yes which is the best institute recommended ???
I already have a regular MBA from a different university, but i wish to do an Executive MBA. Will my MBA affect my selection in getting thru in ISB...
Please guide me in all this...
Looking forward to your kind support...

Congrats to all who made it πŸ˜ƒ

I am very new in this forum and have no knowledge regarding GMAT and MBA from international schools and ISB and likes.
Can anyone please help me in this regard from the scratch or provide any pointers ?

Thanks,
Ashish

Hi Rishika
i agree with the above statement...the no.s dont have any relevance for us..but just for the sake of it this is wat i heard in the info session @ delhi from ISB..

they said that they recieve 60% of their apps in R2..dont know if u can assume that 60% also form r2 admits...i.e. of 400 odd seats...160 in r1 & 240 in r2..

mayb 1 pointer to this hypothesis is tht the orkut grp of ISB 2009 has arnd 110 members till date..assuming an 70% penetration among the net savvy junta..the fig of 160 looks reasonable...just a wild guesstimate

Mayb BFU..can give us an idea abt his batch...

cheers!

HI everyone..i had my ISB interview yesterday in Kolkata.. Heres how it went..1) Was asked to write a 100 word essay, as soon as I entered the business centre...2) There were 3 people in the interview committee, though only 2 of them did all the talking..Questions:1) What is the first question do u think we are gonna ask you? (answered this incorrectly)2) Why have you scheduled your interview in Kolkata (im from bangalore)?3) What work did you do at NDTV?4) Are you satisfied with your current job? Do you think you are performing well? (Answer to the first question was YES)5) Then why do u wanna do a MBA?6) Case Study: Whats the potential market size of a pen that never runs out of ink?7) Why are you always given the toughest clients to handle at your office? Do you want to ask us anything? this discussion went on for quite a while..Overall 40 minutes of conversation..Keeping my fingers crossed...ATB to everyone...

Thank you for your interview experience and all the best.

Could you please let us know about the topic of your essay?

Regards,
Mohit

Dear puys,
Thank you all for sharing your interview experiences. It is my turn to give back to pagalguy now. I had my interview a couple of days back in Chennai. There were no bad turns in the interview, it lasted 20-25 mins. But looking back at it, I felt there were places where I could've improved and I also formed an opinion about their interview process. That's what I wish to share with all of you.

I talked to the doorman and found out that an interview panel interviews only about 10 candidates a day. They take a whole hour for each candidate. I concluded that they spend about 30mins going through a candidates profile and framing a possible set of questions. The other 30mins goes for the actual interview. Therefore almost all questions will be greatly customized to your profile. So take a print out of your app, think about what specific questions they are likely to ask you and prepare well for that. Of course there are general questions like Why MBA, Why ISB etc that everybody will be asked. You can go through interview experiences posted by others to make a database of such questions. But I believe that one should spend more time on questions that are specific to your profile.

In all probability you will be the only one waiting for an interview. The previous candidate will be inside the room being interviewed. So you, the doorman and maybe the receptionist could be the only ones in the waiting room when you are writing your 100 word essay. This essay could just be evaluating your writing style (to compare with submitted essays) and will probably have no other bearing in evaluation.

Interview panel sizes vary from 1 to 5 (based on my reading of others' interview experiences). I was interviewed by 2 people - a lady and a gent both in their 40s. When they are introducing themselves make sure you catch their names. If you don't, say pardon or s'thing like that and request them to repeat it. I am stressing this because I feel it could be a way of evaluating your ability to acquaint yourself with new people. If you noticed, typically the interviewer from adcomm (Hema) is the only person clearly mentioned in all posts. Most people wrote that they didn't catch the others' names or speculated that they were alumni. I made the same mistake. During intro, the second interviewer murmured s'thing under his breath and I failed to ask for a repeat. Before the interview begins, the interviewers decide amongst themselves on the role they play - to assess body language or content. While I was waving my hands and talking, I turned to one of the interviewers. She was looking at my hands, not at me. Eye contact will definitely be noted.

One in 20 or 30 candidates (who've posted) have reported being given a stress interview. If you get one, just be cool and answer patiently. That's all I can say. If you perform moderately well in a stress interview.. if you can be articulate, it's a great performance. So it could work out to your advantage.

I think you can assume that i most cases the people who interview you will be having a HR/finance/business background. So techie details in your resume will not catch their interest. If you can steer them into topics such as communication skills, people management etc, you can strike up a good conversation. If your answers involve techie stuff and techie business developments, don't expect them to ask you the questions. Make the effort to market yourself, be as down to earth as possible and get them to understand your subject.

In general, it is good to go with the assumption that it is your responsibility to sell yourself, not their responsibility to find out about you. If your interview is in the morning, consider yourself lucky. The interviewers will be full of energy and ready to ask you all the questions. If your interview is in the late afternoon/evening (like mine) you can expect dull faces and short interviews unless you are proactive in marketing yourself and adept at steering the direction of the interview. It goes without saying that the longer you keep them interested, the more likely it is that they will remember you. There is always a luck factor involved in every human process. For example, if the interviewer can relate to your field of work, it definitely helps.

All my interview questions were specific to my profile - my education, work and activities, except for the notorious 'why mba?', so it's pointless posting them here. Try to anticipate possible questions and prepare well for them. Practice writing 100 word essays if you need to. Be cheerful, be cool and look good during your interview. Wish you all the very best of luck.

Conrad
