As i'm interested in FPM, I have decided to go for GMAT. My overall academic is 80% from 10th to Post graduation (M.Pharmacy).I am GATE qualified. I am 31.I have 2 years of work experience. But I have carreer gap of 2 years as I have a 2 year old. Currently workingworking in MNC. I want to know what are my chances of ending up in IIMs, if I manage a good GMAT score? Please comment. It would be a great help.

The average (arithmetic mean) N numbers is M. When the number x is removed, the average decreases by 3. What is the value of x? 

1) M + 3N = 21

2) N = 2M

Hi

For any question on averages, it is a good idea to apply the formula as many times as the word "mean" appears in the question.

From the question:

Sum/N = M    => Sum = MN

When x is removed, the sum of numbers will be Sum - x.

(Sum - x)/(N - 1) = M - 3

QUESTION:

Set A: {x, x, x, y, y, y, 3x+y, x-y}

If y > x > 0, what is the range of set A?

1) The median of set A is 10

2) The average (arithmetic mean) of set A is 9

SOLUTION:

Since y>x>0 so 3x+y will be greatest and x-y will be least and Negative

Range = Highest - Lowest = 3x+y - (x-y) = 2x+2y

Arrangement of Set in ascending order of values is

{x-y, x, x, x, y, y, y, 3x+y}

Statement 1: Median = 10

Median is average of two middle terms for a set with even no. of terms

i.e. (x+y)/2 = 10

i.e. x+y = 20

i.e. 2x+2y = 40 SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: Average = (7x+3y)/8 = 10 i.e. 7x+3y = 80

NOT SUFFICIENT

Answer: Option A

What is the greatest common divisor of positive integers j and k?

1) The greatest common divisor of 3j and 2k is 2

2) The greatest common divisor of 5j and k is 10
