The Art of writing SOP... - 27-10-2003, 10:46 AM

Hello Junta...

Hope u all had a great festival & now, its time to get back to those books!!! I have been getting a few anxious mails regarding Statement of Purpose - the hows/ the whats... Ya... have been kinda helping some ppl... but I thought there would be lots of ppl who would want to know & do not know where to ask.. so, a thread for all such ppl....

I really hope u ppl do not mind posting ur SOP online.. i can work on them .. kinda spruce it up & make it a lil ok....Am i an authority on this.. HELL NO... .. but have been geting a lot of personal mails... so i thot.. i can go ahead & take this liberty!!! so that... even those who really do not want to post their SOP can read these... & make a few alterations & send them ... but I honestly think that in INDIA, it really doesnt matter so much.. where as for schools abraod.. it can make or break ur chances...

Will really try to work on each ... but just hope RELIANCE donot kill me with more work!!!

Any genuine replies (no jokes.. no tut tuts...no small talks) are welcome. Even if a coupla guys are gonna be benefitted from this, thats enough for me....

A few pointers:
1) Pls do not make any unequivocal statements like.. i hate to work for somebody... stuff like that....
2) Dont make it verbose... ppl look for simple plain english!!! If u are asked to write a 800 word essay.. u need to write about 750 - 900 words... but if u can sell urself with 600 crisp essay.. boy.. nothing like that (but dont go below that!!)
3) Last but not least... each of ur SOP...is individualistic...give it a personal touch.. dont sound phony...

There are couple of sites online.. go thro' google... there are essays for B school applications.. read them.. pick up pointers... & make urs!!!

http://www.statementofpurpose.com/
http://www.accepted.com/grad/
etc etc.....

Also, theres nothing like starting ur essay with a bang statement .. mebbe a quote then.. go about elaborating it... u may find quotes by ay topic in ..

http://www.quoteland.com

Okie Dokie, with these pointers, lets get down to business... post in ur SOP.. or atleast a skeleton.. or whatever u have in mind....

And just be patient....

SIMBA

Re: The Art of writing SOP... - 27-10-2003, 02:00 PM

Now, my dear folks.. if u are not gonna post .. how can i help u!!?? :!: :!:

There is nothing to be shy or worried about somebody stealing ur SOP....nobody can.. trust me... is they do... they are not worth a B School!!!! :!: :!:

Anyways.. i think... IT is something most of u guys would wanna know... just a sample thing that i cooked up... ignore all typos... grammar.. just get the main idea... now... we are good at RC .. arent we....

It is said "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." I agree completely agree with Arthur C. Clarke on that. I strongly feel that the Technology is what drives a company and it is through efficient management of technological resources a company can grow ten fold within a short span of time.

* Having completed my bachelors in Engineering (if IT mention it!!), this field has always fascinated me. My astute thinking and strong analytical abilities have helped me in topping my class/ branch (if nothing – don’t mention academics.. show it where it exists!!)

* After my degree studies, I started working with an IT firm. This opened up a fascinating world of science and technology to me. Being in a junior position, it always struck me how inefficiently technology was managed. It has been more than a dream to understand the subtle nuances of this field and make a career in this field.

Your esteemed institution with its…. (Talk about infrastructure – faculty – students – alumini – whatever u consider important!! -> pls visit the website & spend atleast an hour on it jotting down whats what!!)… Graduating from here in flying colours is something that I have dreamed of and hope to achieve through sincere hard work & dedication.

Etc etc… Make it a lil personal.. let ur dreams/ heart talk….okie????!!!!

Re: The Art of writing SOP... - 27-10-2003, 06:59 PM

hey simba!!

i've written this one for FMS today.....first time writing a SOP and dont know much abt writing it....and havent shown this to anyone for correction...

people, please dont laugh at this (or hate me for this)

and simba, i'd be glad if u can advice me before tomorrow afternoon....tell me if is sounds like boasting or somethin like that...i also have to get the photo attested by a gazetted officer, but i dunno anyone in mumbai, and there's no time to send it home...
and hey, everything in this is honest!!!! i dont want to get jacked by the board!!!

ok..here it is..

The 4-year integrated M.Sc(Tech) Finance programme, that i'm presently doing in BITS PILANI has given me a good foundation in the field of finance. At the same time, the freedom and the flexibility attached with the course allowed me to explore my other interests through the projects and electives. So, at the end of 3 years, thanks to this programme, i have done courses in various disciplines like engineering, computer programming (Unix, C, PL/SQL, OOP (Java) ), mathematics and management. I've also done a course each on Legal Environment of Business, Corporate Taxation, Dynamics of Social change and Public Administration, apart from the regular courses in finance. Though i have been helped by these courses to get broad viewpoint, i have no practical experience in the field of finance. I am currently doing a 6 month internship in the human resource development department of the central bank of india, mumbai but even here my project is based on software application and no way related to finance.

So now, as the time has come for me to enter the corporate world, i feel the need to equip myself with practical skills that will aid me in facing the complex business environment with confidence. I believe that the MBA programme from FMS, with its intimate faculty and oppurtunities to work on projects in real life, will add value to my skills as a manager. After completion of the programme from FMS, i see myself in the field of investment banking, where i plan to assess my potential and strive towards actualizing it.

First of all... its very easy to sit there & laugh.. to come out & write what ur PURPOSE is .. that, my friend, is difficult... Let anybody dare to laugh at u.. they are gonna incur my wrath for life...

Quote:
tell me if is sounds like boasting or somethin like that
hahahaha.. not at all my dear... u have to see some SOPs (actually mine... hehe... it looks like I am the GODDESS of EVERYTHING... )

Anyways.... looked thro the SOP... hmmm... for a first timer.. that looks good.. more than anything.. it has a ring of truth.. though it needs a lil bit of organising.. hmmm.....

Quote:

I know... its the truth.. just a lil disorganised.. No.. u wont get jacked in the interview if u know... what precisely u want out of life...

Here is what I could do.. & the time is 10:30ish.. well before noon... u are free to do any corrections/ modifications....

JUST ONE POINT - > all my SOPs will have the word NUANCES... i cant resist using that word...

Money matters have always been my area of interest. It not only fascinates me but also propels me to work towards a high-flying career in the field of finance viz. Investment Banking, Corporate Finance etc.

I completed my 4-year integrated M.Sc (Tech) Finance programme from BITS PILANI, one of the most revered institutions in India. This programme not only gave me a good foundation in finance but also gave me the flexibility to work in other distinct fields in the form of its projects/electives. Some of the courses that I have successfully completed are in the field of engineering, computer programming, mathematics and management. Apart from regular courses, owing to my personal interests, I chose to study some unique courses like Legal Environment of Business, Corporate Taxation, Dynamics of Social change and Public Administration. After my graduation, I took up a 6-month internship in the human resource development department of the Central Bank of India, Mumbai. The work here is very interesting and has made me understand various other subtle nuances that goes into the functioning of big corporations.

But finance will always remain close to my heart and I wish to embark upon a fulfilling career in this field. For this, I need to back my graduate degree with a MBA programme from a top-class college so that I can enter the corporate world fully equipped with all theoretical / practical skills that will aid me in facing the complex business environment with confidence. FMS, with its eminent faculty and diverse real life projects has been my first choice. I am sure with FMS, I can actualize my dreams in my chosen area.

Silly me... assumed u have completed the course.. pls correct it!!! & do not write after my grad... say.. just during my internship programme....
