Tiss Hrm&lr (2007-2009) - 08-05-2006, 06:49 PM

Hi All,

On my last visit to Daman, I saw a hoarding "START EARLY, REACH SAFELY"

I made it to TISS for 2006-2008 batch. I had a lot of help from the contributors of the Thread for '06-'08.

I start this thread for all the aspirants of TISS '07-'09.

Will make sure that all the information is available from previous posts and latest ones regarding TISS are available here.

Selection Process (Aptitude & Essays) - 10-05-2006, 11:54 AM

TISS changed the selection process for '06-'08 batch and it would be safe to presume that the process would be the same hence forth.

It is a four stage process namely Aptitude Test, Essay Test, Group Discussion & Personal Interview.

Aptitude Test: (the no. of questions may vary... I don't recollect)
This comprises of four sections namely Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Business Knowledge and a section on simple mathematics.

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning carry 2 marks each and each has 25 questions. Mathematics carries 1 mark and 50 questions. Business Knowledge section had around 30 questions. I could not attempt even 20 % of the questions in this section. Questions included five-year plans, economic growth. Only serious business magazines can help.

As far as aptitude test is concerned, I had the feeling that it was very easy. This might not be the case next year as TISS changed the pattern. It might be more intense this time.

Essay Test:
Please don't apply the logic of "BADA HAI TO BEHTAR (BETTER) HAI"

When I gave the essay test, I saw a girl furiously writing from the word go and could clearly see around 7 pages in those 45 minutes. She is not in. I wrote only 2 ½ pages. But I made sure that I spent around 7-9 minutes in deciding the topic and structuring and only when I was satisfied with what I had, I started writing. Ram, our senior at TISS, had suggested it and it has worked for me.

The topics can be varied but will broadly cover social, political and economic issues.

Times Editorial, definitely Hindu Editorial, Outlook, IndiaToday, CNN-IBN, NDTV have been the time tested ones that have worked. I would suggest www.indiatogether.org too. Alternatively, search google with the keyword related:www.indiatogether.org.

Selection Process - Group Discussions, as posted by Padfoot - 10-05-2006, 11:56 AM

Objective of GD : stuff like leadership, communication skills, presentation skills, how you say what u want to say, how u listen to others, tolerate views, reach a consensus.... frankly, I personally believe a GD defeats the purpose of testing the very qualities stated above 'coz I really don't think much of these are really seen / tested... I may b a very well-read, informed, sensible, meticulous and focused person but if i'm shy / my group's rowdy / topic not to my liking / not too much info on subject, I'll not get through! but the fact remains that GDs are the only way to look at candidates in groups and eliminate... It's impossible to interview so many ppl...

So guys, be at your best behaviour and no riots / fights plz... the entire group will get disqualified. And if you'll dunno much about the topic, wait for some views from the rest and then give in ur inputs... its ok if you don't start the discussion... be ready to sum it up - u may b asked to conlude individually!

I'm a little skeptical on discussiong out topics here in the thread snce althou you'll would put your ideas forth - it will remain just that - an exchange of ideas! none of the rest of the 'qualities' like leadership, comuniction skills, body language et al will be tested. in Gd's its equally imoportant what you say AND how you say it.

Newayz, if you'll decide to go ahead with it, we'd see how much we can help wih it online!!!

Well junta my view is that all trade unions per se should be dismantled
Anyways i am never going to negotiate ( Jumping the gun here assuming i become an Hr- Manager ) With any with any trade unions run by communist comrades

Communism or Socialism ruined this country up till 1990 and its only then when we finally opened our economy that this country has seen some progress.

Labour Laws should be reforrmed to a hire and fire scheme to encourage foreign investment i say.

Unfortunately the pro reform BJP government is out and the comrades are making noises in delhi , hope the congress has some sense and keeps the commies at bay.

TISS is second best after XLRI for PMIR...only 30seats u c for XL's 60 in PMIR... about the 80k question i have no doubt its a very tricky call... but if i were u i wud look at it this way... addin the 80k my total cost of education including acco comes to about 1.8 for the 2 yrs while that wud be much less than the amount u wud pay annually for ICFAI for fees and acco.

Moreover look at the placements the avg pay in TISS is 5.9 lakhs[highest 8.2 and lowest is 4.3] which u need to compare with the avg in ICFAI [ i dunno what it is]. So take these factors into consideration. TISS while it may not be better than XL in PMIR is def ahead of SCMHRD and MDI's HR prog.
Still its ur personal call mate, how much the 80k has to come from pocket and how much of the loan the bank wud refinance u...they shud on the face of it not have a problem as TISS is a more reputed inst than ICFAI and also the loan amt wud be less than the original which they wudve approved for u for ICFAI...anyways its for u and ur family to make that decision....ALL assumin u get thru TISS....Best Of Luck

spoke to a guy who had appeared for the tiss gd/pi last year, and also another who had appeared in 98 or sometime then... both got thru essay/gd, one cleared pi (got a call) but decided not to join and went to lichtenstien... now he is back for a while... they both say that what tiss looks for in the person the yfinally select for pi is not known... the tiss people tell before the gd that they will not tolerate over-aggression or taking too much controll of the gd... in the pi they both had stress interviews... also, i remember reading on this forum that all who apply get called for the essay/gd, and from them ppl are shortlisted for pi... but the senior fellow said that they will shortlist people from the applicants also, ie not all who apply will be called for essay/gd...
abt the essay, again, what they look for is not data or quotes.. they look for how you structure your opinion....
just posted all this so it can help all, including me, by discussion... please respond peple.

TISS (Vs) Other Institutes - 13-05-2006, 10:55 AM

Saw some thoughts on comparing TISS vis a vis with other institutes.....TISS is second best to none..am not saying bcos am a TISSian...but am giving u pointers for you to ponder over and decide for urself...Am not saying wat other colleges do but am giving u a perspective on TISS

*) Peers...Peers are the best in TISS..very diverse...U get to interact with Social work and Hospital/Health Admin students...whose perspective is very different from rest....Other B-schools have only MBA's...

*) Location...Mumbai dude (u will know the value of it only wen you r here)...not in a deolated town in Bihar or Orissa

*) Industry ineraction... Location adds on to it....

*) Culture...You have to feel it....Then visit other colleges to come to know of how valueble TISS culture is

*) Batch Size ...The amount of bonding b/w the batch, b/w senior and junior batch, b/w faculty and batch is unpararlleled. Probably the only college, where all the faculty knows all the names of the students in the batch

*) Field work...No other b school has such a curriculum

*) Ur CV would show as if you have done 4 projects for 4 companies before your final placements. This excludes Summer Internship.

*) Summers is not mandatory unlike other B- Schools, which in itself shows how much industry interaction students get during the college days....

I can go on and on...

Think before...IS PLACEMENTS WHAT UR LOOKING FOR...?????????? Salaries and placements may be a reason (No second thought abt it)...But

IS THAT ALL...

THINK....What you want

VALUE ADDITION OR BRAND....

OR

BOTH BRAND AND VALUE ADDITION

If you find answers for all of this.....Comparison doesnt arise at all...You will find the right answer

Essay Topics - 13-05-2006, 12:57 PM

As mentioned earlier and elsewhere in other threads, it helps to read serious newspapers and magazines, etc. for doing well here. Your awareness and sensitivity to social, political and economic issues won't come from just preparing on these topics but will come from your interest in these topics. The essay topic I choose had nothing in common with all the reading that I had done. The readings that I had done, however, had changed the way I interpreted and understood things. Hence, read a lot, I mean a hell lot. It will the change the way you think, interact and understand the world around you.

Will keep adding more topics here.

ESSAY TOPICS:

1.The politics of Poverty
2.Marxist perspective of knowledge
3.Delayering of an organisation
4.Values for the new millenium
5.Alternatives to marriage:A feminist perspective
6.Public Health system as defined in rural india
7.Anomaly of Secularism
8.Multinationalism and democracy
9.Indian-Pakistan relations
10.Business reengineering
11.Indiviudal Goals & Society's good
12.Democracy nad Multiculturalism
13.Strategic Management
14.Entrepreneurship in INdia
15.Western IMperialism in Knowledge production
16.Management for accountability in PSU
17.Issues with restructuring an organisation

hey guys... i am not sure... whether my queries are okie to be put up her or not... I had posted them initially, on "HR Anyone??" but was advised to put them on TISS thread....

i have a few more Questions on HR... since i am quite confused and i sincerely hope the intellectual PG junta would surely help me...

1) What is the scope of HR today? People say that fields like mktg or sales are much better than HR and one should choose them. Is it true?

2) Can an HR guy never be a CEO?

3) Whatz the difference between MD and CEO?

Regards,
Gaurav

Please help me out with my confusion!

Role of HR today is much more than at any time in the past in India. Even a few years back and infact even now in some industries, HR is looked at interms of administration and benefits. However, that is not true especially in a globalised India and a very, very ambitions work force. Hence the need for sound HR function which can take care of people and cater to people in an organization.

Some might have concerns about HR outsourcing, but infact, its an opportunity. It would further enlarge the role of HR and probably give more entrepreneurial opportunities.

So HR as a profession could be the most stable around.

Regarding other queries, I do not have much clarity but would try and get some seniors to contribute w.r.t that.
