Hi Puys, I am Planning to take UPSC 2013 wd Political Science and History as optionals... Can neone suggest me about the books to be followed... Thanks in advance...
For History:-
1. NCERT (old syllabus) History books - Ancient, Medieval, and Modern 2. IGNOU Ancient History 3. Medieval India Vol1 and 2 by Satish Chandra 4. Medieval India vol 3 by J L Mehta 5. India's Struggle for Independence by Bipan Chandra
Hello Guy, I was reading through this post and found it very useful. I had a basic question which might sound silly but still would appreciate if somebody can help me.
I am getting into MBA this year and also intend to prepare for UPSC. The very basic question to seniors is please throw some light as to how folks prepare while studying parallelly for the rigorous course of MBA? How do we manage time between case studies, quizzes, assignments, lectures etc.? I am asking this because i really want to plan my routine in a way that I can do some serious studies. Is it really possible to squeeze in 4-5 hours of study daily in midst of the demanding classes and tests etc. Is this possible in IIMs too. Will really be grateful if someone can help so that I atleast know how difficult it would be to prepare simultaneously. Some success stories will really be a confidence booster :)
Thank You
Seniors, please help. I really want to plan a routine.

Is it intelligent to prepare for a completely new subject for mains? such as Psychology or Philosophy? Or should I just focus on the subjects that I have studied till graduation or atleast till 12th? such as economics, management?

Still not clear weather optional will b there or not in 2013 but if optionals continues Then To Select Optional Subject u must keep the following things in ur mind
1. Interest - This one is the most crucial parameter. If ur mind is where ur heart is, half the battle is won
Ok Now another question arises What Role Does Interest Play?? In The Selection Of Optional Subjects?
See Interest Keeps You Attached and Motivated during the Stretched out course of Preparation. There will be sustained desire to know more about the subject. Hence even if it is difficult for a while, you will have enough motivation to see it through.
2. Syllabus - Now come to this If the factor of interest does not help u , get more realistic and turn to the syllabus of various optionals. Select one Optional and stay with it a day or two. Read Every sub topic mentioned in it. Reflect Over it . See whether you can develop some chemistry with the subject
3. Question Paper - If you still have not developed any particular liking for the Optional, turn to the question paper, which is one step more realistic than the syllabus. Generally everybody is either analytic or factual.
Analytical people like questions where they have to discuss many things without giving many factual details, whereas some people like learning facts by pure memory and prefer questions which demand straight and factual answers. Read the questions of various Optionals and try to figure out which subject makes you more comfortable

This a brilliant reply, thanks a lot.
By what time will it be clear if they want to keep optional subjects or not?
Plus, if they remove optional subjects (how should I start my prep, I have no idea of UPSC exams)
Plus, I am petrified of the Indian language exam in mains, my Hindi is very poor 😞 and I know only 2 languages hindi and english
Hey...I too am residing 4 d time being at kolkata...Wat r ur optionals??
I'm not giving it right now.I need to look ,introspect further and can tell about my optonals.
That's why i'm preferring sticking to GS. Though i'm from commerce stream it's safe to assume i will go for this one.
Agian i will look for public administration and history .Let's see.I',m gunning for earliest 2013. By that time i will be touching 25. Target is to clear this within 28 years and settle finally .
My Younger brother passed out from NITIE this year and i would suggest you to join this college and you will be having ample-ample time for UPSC preparations without even affecting your normal MBA exams/placements.
Just go for it Dude. You will be having double advantage. MBA plus UPSC preparation.
cazarekar Says
I agree... you can continue your UPSC preparation along with NITIE MBA degree.
Hi abhishek, In my opinion NITIE is the one to choose right at this moment. And I'll tell you why. I know the temptation of investing one year to crack UPSC, but mark my words, UPSC is the one of the most unpredictable examinations you would ever come across. I am sure you would have tried mighty hard for it for the whole year but what if,just by chance, UPSC remains out of reach. Its gonna be hard then. So what I think you should be doing now is, join NITIE (send the fees if you havent done it already ) and after you join, you are gonna get time for UPSC preparations.
And better than mine, you have your senior Vision_IIMACL bro... listen to him
Decide wisely.
Thanks.
Seniors / friends need suggestion/advice/your view
i am aiming for upsc 2013 and have an admit from very prestigious nitie mumbai. now i m in confusion as to go for mba or devote one year completely for upsc preparation or shall i joing nitie and prepare along with mba.
some points i figured plz advice / suggest yours 1. devoting one year to upsc
complete classroom coaching i can avail and full time preparation will be there . since csat is similar to cat i can aim cat again with upsc too
-ve if i dont get thru and worst i dont make it to cat next year i will loose on one year and one year of mba but yeah will have one year of full preparation so that i can aim the next upsc
2. joing nitie and have parallel preparation for upsc +Ve i wont miss on my year and so investing and utilising also with brand of nitie . curriculum at nitie is cool [ as heard from seniors] so regular study can be done after 2 years i will be in earning mode so financially no burden as an individual .
-ve might be riding on two boats at a time can cost both and i end poorly on both fronts [ lacking in proper pptn of upsc ] will miss classroom coaching [ there are not delhi compared classes near nitie ]
waiting fr your honest suggestions specially varun sir whats your call on this .
Buddy
As i responded to your query earlier as well, being in NITIE will provide you with ample time for preparation of UPSC. I did not prepare otherwise i too had ample time. 😃 So, i dont see any point in leaving the admit when you can prepare alongwith. And you have enough time to prepare as well as CSAT 2012 is still 12 months from now. 😃
I think both the apprehensions are taken care of 😃
Feel free to shoot any further doubt!!
thanks bhu.ait cazarekar saptarshi_7star and varun sir for the reply
but is it really the same having a one year full classroom coaching [ 8-9 months ] in Delhi comparable with prepartion with mba studies ? i talked with one of my senior [gave civil serv interview this year but couldnt clear ] he said it will be better to come to delhi for one year and give a full fledged one year devoted studies because it requires this much of time and devotion atleast and one other senior frm iim k supported fact to continue with nitie mba and pepare along with it [ he himself wrote mains twice ]. really getting confused as on one side there is fear of lossing one year completely [considering my age as 26 now ] and on other side dont want to give a medicore shot at upsc as the time will be running out . plz give yr advice .
