UPPSC 2011 - Upper Subordinate Services Exam Pre results have long been declared and Mains were held recently.

Hi Palak
I've read your previous posts and found them very useful. I am pursuing MBA from Narsee Monjee (NMIMS Mumbai). I also took SSC CGL last year and i'm almost through. I'll easily get Income Tax Delhi or Examiner. I can fetch a decent job from my college considering the opportunity it provides. But I've now started focusing on UPSC. I'm just 23. I've read all the three NCERTs for History and Physical n human geography. I've seen CSAT paper2 i.e. aptitude and i found very easy. Now i have the feeling that i'll be able to clear prelims this year itself But i have no preparations for mains. So shall i take a shot this year or rather i should save an attempt? i've just started laxmikanth for PubAd. Also what would you suggest about working in an MNC or joining an Inspector post through ssc, considering my UPSC endeavour?? Also i'm planning to take either history or geography along with Pub Ad as these subject will be useful for GS preparation as well.
Looking for a prompt response
Thanks in advance

Can somebody please tell what to select in " Are you claiming exemption from
appearing in Indian Language paper ?" while applying online for the exam.

Please read the notification properly. There are 31 pages in the notification and they are for some reason.

The paper-I on Indian Languages will not, however, be compulsory
for candidates hailing from the North-Eastern States of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland and also for candidates hailing from the State of Sikkim.

Went through the notification twice but still I am confused.
Well I don't hail from the NE states.
On selecting "NO" its saying to select one of the languages.
Wanted to know what does that mean?
M going to take the exam in English and the list is not mentioning the language.

can final year students apply

While applying online for UPSC, we have to select the two optionals for the mains exam. If we clear the prelims, then can we change the optional or we have to stick to the optionals that we filled right now. I didnt find anything regarding this in notification. Kindly help..

You have to take one paper in Indian Language where they will check your knowledge in the language of your choice. English is not an Indian Language. So, if your mother tongue is Hindi then select that.

P.S.:- Do you know the structure of the examination? How many papers are there in Mains? At least do some homework before filling the form for the exam. You do not know what is the structure of exam and are filling the form.

Thanx for clearing it and also for the valuable suggestion.

After clearing prelims, you will need to fill another form. So, you can change your optionals and centre at that time. So, if you are still undecided about optionals, then you can fill anything now and change them later.

Save your attempt. It is better that if you are not prepared then do not take the exam.

As far as joining a private company is concern, it should be your decision. I do not know the details about the job and other things. See, if you are prepared, then you can easily crack the exam whether in MNC or SSC. People like to choose SSC, because it gives them a sense of satisfaction and ample time to prepare for UPSC.

Laxmikanth is good for starters. You can take up any subject - History or Geography depending on your interest. Both will be useful in GS.

PM me if you need more specific answers.

I do not think that you will need any more books. More than books, it is practice that will take you places. So, keep doing that.

Indian Polity by Laxmikanth is good enough.

I have no idea about this book. By the cover of the book it seems that it has Q&As; only. Is that right? I do not think until and unless you have worked on your basics, you should try to move to Q&As.; I have no idea about SSC CGL. This book may work there, but I do not think this is going to help in UPSC CSE.

It may be worth it, but I still think that you should stick to the regular resources.

If you are not ready to appear in Mains and are not even aiming for it, then my suggestion would be do not waste your attempt. Target 2013.

P.S.:- I didn't want to reply to this post as I would have had to be blunt. I have tried to tone down. But if you feel that it is blunt and hurt you, then really sorry.
