brother frankly speaking the questions pattern has been changing and the people in the coaching centres and the material which they provide are loaded with the 'so called important' part and leaving few and the upsc is asking from those parts.
so i suggest you a method which i am following which is proving to be very helpful and covers each and every aspect to the hilt.
get the syllabus paper of each and every subject and start reading from the internet topic by topic.garner the patience to read the wikipedia content to the core, any 'noun' which comes to your sight,i mean any 'noun' should be noted down.start preparing the notes, initially you would feel it is a long process, gradually you would love doing it,follow this method for both the subjects, with this method i bet you can secure the required marks i.e 700-800 from both subjects.
Hello Seniors.
I am a final year Chemical Engineering student of UDCT. I just got done with finals. I dont know much about preparation for UPSC apart from the available subjects n some of the combinations. Can some1 tell me how to start preparing. Do I need to join classes ? How long will I take to prepare ? Also is it wise to prepare for the UPSC now as I will also be taking the CAT this year and will also be working. Though I wont spend too much time on CAT prep as I got a very good percentile in CAT 2010 but didn't convert my IIM C call.
PS: I realise everyone here may not be pleased to see me throw random questions on this thread but I guess this is the best available source of info so I'm still posting
Hi people I want to appear for Civil Services exam in 2012. Right now i am doing my MBA from IIM Lucknow (Majoring in Finance and Economics). I did my engineering Computer Science - from BITS Pilani. Now i am really confused as far as optional subjects are concerned:
1. Physics - I really like the subject and understand it well. I have gone through the syllabus and apart from a few topics I am comfortable with the rest. But, on the flip side the subject is not relevant to my current field of study.
2. Economics: As i have already mentioned I am majoring in this. I understand and like it a lot. But, again after seeing the syllabus i think a lot is required to be done before I can claim to be comfortable in the subject.
Now i am really confused regarding the 2nd subject. 1st optional ill be opting will be either Pub. Ad or Management with a slight inclination towards public administration.
If any one can let me know about the pros and cons of taking physics, economics. And what all needs to be done in both the cases.
Other choices i have been recommended are :
a. Geography
b. Mathematics
please help me out. Thanks in advance.
brother the first choice you made may not always be the best choice you should continue with especially because you are out of touch with the subject and the level of competency required is that of a graduate which needs a 'very good amount' of hardwork.
i dont mean to discourage you but please follow a strategy done by me and many others who cleared upsc, pick the arts and humanities subjects including management from the upsc prescribed subjects, read about the important aspects of the subject and something about few topics from those subjects which will give you a better idea and pick topics about which you already you have a superficial idea on.
i said this because its a safe bet and understanding and grasping the subject and reproducing it will be easy, courtesy your iimlucknow credentials.
i wanted to give this advice being a fellow civil services aspirant who started preparing and i pressed the brakes only to restart at iimcalcutta(waitlisted @2 and hoping for a convert).btw i got selected in iimlucknow as well.
one of my optional would be management and the 2nd one would depend on the amount of time i can dedicate to 2nd subject as i am pretty good at some of the topics in each and every subject.i did good amount of research and made a list of the subjects which are suited for us from all aspects:
1.geography
2.sociology
3.political science and international relations
4.public administration
5.psychology
6.history
7.philosphy
8.anthropology
please give me feedback on my order of hierarchy
take any two subjects without any conflict with the particulars mentioned in the upsc circular
i am attaching the associated pdf

hello brother
i was also in the same situation which you were in 1 year ago, most important question is when do you want to give the 1st attempt because the 1st one should be the best one and i say it again the best, the time you take to give your 1st attempt would be maximum 2 years.
the most important point is how best you give the 1st attempt, the lesser no.of attempt(s) it is going to take to crack the civil services.
my order which is personal and may change from person to person has been given in the above post.
combinations i will suggest you if you can tell me your interests.interests bole tho(hardcore ones regarding the subjects mentioned)
classes are not that essential but keeping in mind the need for getting acquaintance with prelims syllabus at a faster rate coaching would be an option.
i had the same situation, balance cat and upsc as i did because you should not lose in touch with one as you pursue another,i learnt a lot in the process and did well in cat as well.
going to iimc if luck favours me other wise i have converts which i can bank upon.
brother professional degrees are favoured because as the administration has become multifaceted, the skills required are changing.

as people across the spectrum of which i am a part suggest to buy the ncert books especially old ones as well as the new ones of the subjects mentioned in the upsc prelims syllabus(6th to 12th) and then workout which will give you the idea what you are about to encounter.
start reading them which will be the equivalence of preparing the ground and then buy the pratiyogita darpan booklets on those subjects, jot and mug the facts, best start, buy the chronicle year book and start reading, after you are done with that buy pratiyogita darpan panorama.
dont forget brother india 2011 should be completed reading once and preparing the notes as well, because in it lies the future of your course of preparation,it is that much important.
whatever i have written do that step by step it will surely pay you rich dividends.

I'm an engineer so I haven't really read up about any of these topics since school. But I did have a strong liking for History at school. Also how difficult or easy is the Maths compared to Engineering ? Say if I join IIM C next year, should I plan my attempt for while I'l be in the 1st year ?

not a problem if you haven't read, reading them now will be easier than reading them during school, experienced it.
history is good but lengthy, depends on how much you can endure and sustain!!
maths if you are major in maths then the maths paper will be very easy,as i have seen my friends who finds the civil services question papers very easy as he is a bsc in mathematics from a very reputed college.
frankly as you are planning a switch in your educational career, maths and engineering wont be good options.
take optionals which interest you,if you are so interested in history the length wont hinder you in any way, there are so many who cleared upsc taking history, good precedent right!!
iimc will not be a bulwark in your preparation, wherever you are the vigour should be carried over thats it!!

NCERT: they are good, just for the basic concept clarity!
but mostly it is just globe.
i read the indian economy very patiently...and i landed up with nothing specific. Geography is good...but again..not covered in depth.
attempt in the 1st year of management...not a good idea (if u are not crossing the age bar soon).
there are specific books which are designed for civil services...and they are pretty good in covering the length and breadth of topics . (posted by someone in the initial pages).

you mentioned a very valid point, reading ncert books especially the old ones as well as the new ones is very essential, ppl can pm me for the required analysis.
i accept it is globe, but it gives the required basics as well as the nuts and bolts to pursue the higher texts.
in my opinion we can't just start reading the booklets of history, geography and anyother subject which is prescribed in the prelims syllabus, reading ncert books gives the necessary platform to launch yourself to read the much more concise 'include-everything' texts.
reading ncert books doesnt't take much time, believe me.read it like a story book.important reasonings and facts should be noted down anyway.this will help the 'retention capacity' while we read the booklets which will be a really good confidence booster in the process of preparation.
any way prior to the joining into bschool the upsc prelims would be over so no point of 1st year,do give it in the 2nd year i.e with respect to 2011,in 2012.till november we will work a lot, after nov squeeze time to prepare.
upsc prelims takes around 2-3 months of solid preparation so ppl don't worry.
being a civil services aspirant from an IIM,'squeezing' time from the available one should be your sine qua non.

upsc is not just about clearing the Prelims. remember prelims is just the screening. its the Mains exam thats the real tiger!
preparing for 7 subjective papers (+ 2 qualifying papers)...it is said one requires at least 7-8 months of 'dedicated' preparation.
and squeezing time in IIM is easier said than done.
opting for subjects which are a part of General studies will help a lot. like geog., pol sci., pub ad, history(it is 'very' 'very' vast though).

yes the mains exam is the 'realtiger',i said stressing on the prelims exam preparation factoring in the following aspects that being in a bschool and then what is the way forward after getting into bschool?
another aspect is one the of the optional should be management which in turn will help us in scoring good marks in the mains as well as get a good grade point average.squeezing time is not required for this part of the preparation as it is part of the mainstream.'squeezing' time needn't be a worry at anypoint during the course of the preparation because your academics won't be affected in any way as one of the optional you have taken is management for which you will sincerely work and get the grades which will keep you more than happy.the good grades will keep motivating you to do well.
management is a very good optional especially for bschool junta who want to appear for upsc, its a scoring subject,go through the previous question papers, you will get that much needed confidence of taking the bold decision to take management as an optional.
so effectively we need to 'seperately' prepare for the remaining 5 papers, one essay paper is not syllabus oriented so it depends mainly on the amount of knowledge you acquire during the process of the preparation of civilservices and your ability to reproduce and the writing skills a person has.read, read, read the relevant things to crack this section.now the figure comes down to 4.
next, the 2 papers of the chosen subject from the set of subjects prescribed by the upsc.take a subject which you like the most and then read and sit on the subject like you are pursuing a hobby,a job which you like the most which makes your task much more easier, make this and prepare yourself for studying the subject as your 'hobby' for the first 1 year at bschool with 'dedication',isn't it sufficient.in any case take an optional as being suggested by me and my friend to take a subject which is part of the general studies, makes the job a lot easier.
it is not as difficult as it seems.but the most important aspect is choosing the right subject.remember friends in each paper corresponding to the subject we have 2 compulsory questions and 3 out of 6 questions which need to be answered, totalling 5 questions, each valued at 60 marks,a hell lot of choice infront of us.
see to it that there is no case of 'spoilt for choice',lets make the most of the choice by preparing perfectly and intelligently.
the general studies 2 papers remain, the paper-1 consists of the topics we studied for the prelims examination with a greater emphasis on current affairs.if we prepare for the prelims keeping in mind the paper-1 which awaits us is a much better choice.preparation for prelims would be better if we prepare in a way which makes us fit for subjective questions part which in turn helps in objective questions with a good practice and preparation in improving the retention capacity.
the current affairs part should be dealt with a daily newspaper, frontline and the monthly magazine which covers almost everything,i guess this point needn't be mentioned as it should be part of the daily routine and should be a 'cultivated habit' and deserve no special mention in the preparation part.
the paper-2 of general studies is also completely dealt with the daily dose of current affairs as per your interest of books, magazines and newspapers.optimize this part of the reading which is the most important thing.any way i suggest preparing for the paper2 of general studies in a topic by topic manner which will make it much more easier.
lets be optimistic, its a matter choice and how we execute the task at hand.
only when we take the first step forward in a positive direction will be the right approach.
i am not relying on wishful thinking and suggesting you the same, lets create a precedent worthy of emulation.
UPSC 2010 final results declared.
new success stories to look forward to!
