The ethics paper will try to evaluate your personality. If you have previous prelims papers, see the last 8 questions in paper 2. This will be of similar nature.
Your response to the problems faced by people will be analysed. You have to give balanced and non-partisan answers. This is nothing but a prelude to interview.
UPSC checks your brain in the other papers but this paper checks your heart. The country does not need mere computer brained bureaucrats who can remember a lot of things but needs people who can be of some help to the society. Hence UPSC incorporated this paper.
@Mad_Max8 said:@TRUE--WARRIORThanks a lot for replying. It is amazing to have a person of your stature on this forum.these credentials are entirely true. Actually I have done one full classroom course by Rau's IAS but that was two years back, learned their history, geo, economy notes then but don't remember anything now. Now I possess Vajiram's material, and lot of other books. So my basic problem is problem of plenty. I am not able to concentrate on one particular set of material. So if you could guide me which one to pursue, it would be very grateful of you.P.S. as far as MBA is concerned I would do it only if I get FMS( even after that my long term goal is Civil Services only); otherwise I am ready to sacrifice myself on the altar of Civil Services for the next 4 years.
First of all I don't have any stature friend. I am just an ex bank officer and running a small time family owned construction company. I got through mains but I know that I must have just cleared the cutoff. So, I probably may not get into any service this year.
If you have idea about civils exam, you will know that mains cutoff will be around 840 and final cutoff for selection will be around 1100. So, if any person just clears mains cutoff, he should get (1100 - 840 =) 260/300 in interview for selection into the least preferred post but no soul in the world has ever achieved that score in UPSC interview. Nobody knows why UPSC does this weird cutoff thing every year.
I know I'll have to write the test again to get the only post I want - "IAS", but I'll give my best in interview & hope I get atleast postal, telecom, rpf etc.
Working as a PO in Allahabad bank (at Mumbai) ruined me last time. As I didn't have much time, I studied only optionals & gave the exam. This time I am not working and concentrating only on civils (got an SSC post. So, some backup exists).
Welcome to the club man. Take any standard material but first start with history or polity. The content in other subjects like economy, curr affairs, geo (env) will change in this month. So, don't study them in this month.
On a lighter note, let me warn you before you start your voodoo sacrifices. In 2013 exam, the first rank is mine man. You can choose between 2nd and 1000th rank.

Is there any serious aspirant who is considering not giving this attempt because of the changes and the huge new GS syllabus? I mean, do you people think we have enough time, and more importantly enough material to study effectively for this attempt. Is this worth risking an attempt, sight of limited (4) chances a Gen category aspirant gets.
@IDharyana i am skipping cs 13.for me its nt posible to cover all the gs papers in 8 7 months.i was only dpndnt on optional paper.and if anyone take a look at the marks obtnd in prevs years gs paper, they will see very few have scored more than 300.so its tough for me.i need (minimum)18 months of rigorous prep.and paper 5 look like an extensn of pa syllabs.
The results are declared for the SSC CGL 2012 , by what time u are expecting the joining date for inspector posts(iti n excise n others) and for assistant posts (mea, css etc).....what was the trend last yr?
one question, wl upsc tell us our prelim marks?

It's true - extension of GS syllabus is a blow to newcomers. Earlier studying for GS was very difficult & now it is almost impossible. Last time, I couldn't find time to cover all GS subjects due to job issues. So, studied optionals only. Optionals have limited syllabus unlike GS and I seriously don't know why all the new aspirants are happy.
Somehow UPSC got them thinking that they need to study less. I love the way that tricky commission works, a combination of mystery, trickery & stupidity.
It is not advisable to waste an year just because some pattern changed. It changed for everyone taking the exam & not you alone. I know it has become difficult for me & I'll have to put in more hours for mains but I also know that the same applies to all 12000 mains takers. As they say in an evenly poised boxing match - it's just a case of who wants it more & willing to do more that decides the winner.
Do you seriously think you will be able to give 5 or more sincere attempts. It is impossible to maintain tempo for 6-7 years with all the societal pressure. 4 attempts is good. It takes a good minimum of 5 years to complete them & it is not a small time. Think about the interview too. They'll kick us out if we say we took a break because of syllabus change.
Just fight & take the exam guys. Not many realise mains has been made tougher & it will be easy for us when they clear prelims & then understand the thing. This will crumble them down & our competition gets reduced.
Joining for SSC inspector posts starts from nov 2013 and will go on till feb 2014, going by general trend. cbi - sep/oct, iti & css - oct/nov, rest -nov/dec

Puys as UPSC has changed the syllabus for the mains exam this time Pre will be flooded with some super confident peoples appearing for first time an betting high on the changed syllabus. These super confident people will be having degrees from some very prestigious institute and will take this exam as cake walk. I guess UPSC is going to make this exam a level playing field where everyone will be equal opportunity.
hey puys. no compulsory language from this year ?
