"Demonetization is the withdrawal of a particular form of Currency from circulation or sometimes replacing it with new Currency”. There are multiple reasons for a Country doing so, some of the reasons may include to check the Inflation, to curb the Corruption, destroying Counterfeit Currency and promoting the Cashless transactions etc.
Indian government demonetized its biggest denomination notes namely 500-1000 Rupees, which were 86% of the total value of notes in circulation. This is not the first time that Country had undergone such transformation, earlier it was done in 1946 and 1978 with the to deal with the menace of unaccounted money.
As per RBI-country’s 87% transactions are done in cash mode. This loophole is exploited to build a parallel economy. Which helps in terror financing, distorting supply-demand chains and reducing transparency in the economy which in turn hampers the growth and development of the country.
It was expected that this step will help in reducing the fiscal deficit by way of catching tax evaders and promote the cashless economy in India. Thus, enabling tracking of all economic transactions.
this sudden step created panic among the common man due to the cash crunch. Local traders and shopkeepers faced the problem. It is expected that it will affect the MSME sector negatively in the short term consequently, many daily wage earners lost their livelihood for a temporary period.
Though radical, such decisions are inevitable and should be welcomed wholeheartedly as a step in the direction for curbing the menace of corruption, but it should not be a stand-alone step other measures in the same direction should be pursued vigorously.
