Demonetization is a financial step wherein a currency unit’s status as a legal tender is declared invalid. On 8th November 2016, the honourable Prime Minister of India, in a surprise move, announced the demonetization of 500 and 1000 currency notes. In this single move, the government attempted to tackle the three major issues affecting the Indian economy – parallel economy, circulation of counterfeit currency and terror financing.
Doubtlessly, demonetization has yielded certain good results. The move gave a heavy blow to the dishonest and profligate elements in the country. Black money holders suffered a substantial loss. It also aided tax administration in a way by shifting transactions out of the cash economy and into the formal payments system. JAM Trinity – Jan Dhan, Aadhaar and Mobile banking got major boost from demonetization. The real estate sector where black money is parked witnessed a decline in property prices post demonetization. In the longer-term, it can increase tax-GDP ratio and the size of the formal economy.
However, small farmers, merchants, traders and daily wage labourers suffered due to lack of proper planning, intelligence and foresight. Demonetization led to fall in industrial output and loss of jobs and small businesses. It demolished the informal debit and credit mechanism which caused trouble to the poor. Deaths, cash shortage and forgery by bank employees and other businesses were some other outcomes of the move.
To sum up, the objectives of demonetization were noble. Despite all inconveniences, people welcomed the move and stood with the decision as it was in the national interest.
