Hi All...

I'm a First Year student of MBA Marcom @ SIBM right now...

I know that there might be some queries in your mind about joining SIBM... So this thread is here to answer as many as possible.

For starters, Here's some info about SIBM...

SIBM started in 1978, and has a very strong Alumni network & Corporate Interface. The institute is student driven. The faculty here is very good, and SIBM also gets experts from the industry to teach you specific subjects like WTO & Six Sigma. Presently we also have a Six Sigma Certification Course built into the syllabus.

SIBM is a part of SIEC, which is a deemed university.

To get into SIBM, you have to give the SNAP Test, which is a common test for all Symbiosis BSchools. Once you clear the cutoff, you get a call for WT, GD & PI. There is no specific 'soft corner' for engineers / non-engineers / work-ex / freshers... Only your performance in the second stage is taken as base for admission.

SIBM has two streams for MBA.

MBA Dual, which is the basic MBA, with specializations in HR, Mktg., Finance & Operations Mgmt. Specializations begin in Sem III, with two subjects of your specialization in Sem II. In the second year, you also do two more subjects of another specialization as a 'minor specialization'.

MBA Marcom, which is the MBA in Marketing Communication Management. This is a super specialized course, as the name suggests. Teachings about the course specifics begin from Sem I, and teh core subjects are also having different syllabi from the ordinary MBA.

The most important point for many applicants for 2007-09 is this: This year on, the MBA Marcom ceases to be a separate course. It joins the different specializations offered in the normal MBA, not unlike the HR & Ops streams.

The Admissions process for SIBM 2007-09 batch has begun. Prospectuses, charged at Rs. 1200, are out, available at SIBM Pune, selected centres of Corporation Bank, Career Forum, Career Launcher, IMS, TIME, Cerebral Heights, Blue Dart, and Erudite (Calcutta).

hi!
thanks for starting this thread .. am more inclined towards marcom and i do have some doubts and queries
1. are there any sectional cut offs in place to get a call for sibm marcom or do they look only at the overall score?
2. what does the wt comprise of ? is it only an essay or is it on the lines of micat?
3. whats the call:conversion ratio? is it true there are only 15 open category seats?
4. could you please name the core subjects in marcom , the electives offered etc. ?
5. which companies recruit marcom students , average salary offered and also the profiles that are offered?
thanks

Hi...
Taking it question by question...

hi!
thanks for starting this thread .. am more inclined towards marcom and i do have some doubts and queries
1. are there any sectional cut offs in place to get a call for sibm marcom or do they look only at the overall score?
No sectional cutoffs. Only the total SNAP score is taken.

2. what does the wt comprise of ? is it only an essay or is it on the lines of micat?
For us, it was only an essay. Depends on the process for next year, what will be there.
sanaa Says
3. whats the call:conversion ratio? is it true there are only 15 open category seats?
Last year, the call:seat ratio was 10:1. i.e., for every seat, 10 calls were given out. With us, there are about 26 open seats in Marcom, out of 60. 20 are reserved for foreign students, others for reserved category. However, the rules may change with the new reservation quotas coming in effect. Wait for the prospectus to be released, you'll get a clearer picture.
|sanaa Says
4. could you please name the core subjects in marcom , the electives offered etc. ?
Core are Marketing & Communication based subjects, which start from the first sem itself. Marcom, being a super-specialized course, has no electives. You learn only a few common subjects like Law & HRM/OB, mostly in the first sem only, otherwise, all subjects in all sems are specific to Marcom. In fact, even the common subjects are crash courses as compared to the normal MBA, as we have to cover them in shorter time than the rest.
5. which companies recruit marcom students , average salary offered and also the profiles that are offered?
thanks
Last year, placements were held in conjunction with the Mktg. batch. These data are available in the placements link in the first post in this thread.

Hope these answers are enough.

am sorry i wasnt clear. mica's website clearly names and explains the core subjects that will be covered in the first year and then students are allowed to specialize in account planning, market research, media management or brand management . is it the same in sibm ? are the above specialisations offered . could u name some of the core subjects?

is there no seperate data for the marcom batch as i guess the figures will be a bit inflated if combined with the mba mktg figures . also could u please elaborate on the profiles offered to the marcom students?

Hmmm... No, you don't specialize. You have to do all subjects that are there in the syllabus. Why don't you wait until the prospectus comes out in the first week of Sept., so that you can get all details then only. The rest is as I detailed in my previous post. As Marcom is already superspecialized, you cannot have electives in the course, unlike the normal MBA.

Not yet. The data is combined for both Mktg. & Marcom, as the placements were combined for both. Separate info is unavailable as of now about the profiles as well. I will see if we can get something out of my PAT about this.

also by foriegn students u mean children of NRIs?

Foreigners. Foreign passport holders. Not NRIs, who still have Indian passports. Even if you are the dependant of an NRI, if you have an Indian passport you are ineligible. You require an international passport for being eligible.

Hi grondmaster..

My query is that Is it necessary to take Dual specialisation under any circumstances. I want to get specialised in OPs only.
Pls throw some light on this.

You can apply, with each form, to only one course. So if you want to apply for both, apply using differnt forms. Yes, the expense of the forms doubles, but that is your call.

AFA cutoff goes, open category cutoffs for dual were 97 and for marcom were 63.**. The lowest cutoff for reserved category was 21.**. I don't remember the rest.

Dual is now a misnomer. It is actually only MBA. You have a main specialization (in your case, OPs), and two subjects of another specialization of your choice. There was a time when it was major-minor specs., but after a change in syllabus, it's now this way.

SIBM will be shifting to the new campus in our sceond year. So those of you who make it to SIBM will start in the new campus. Although it was supposed to shift in Oct.-Nov., technically, it is infeasible to shift mid-term. Hence, at the beginning of the new year.

Hi Grondmaster,

Well during a recent analysis of the Biz today rnkings, we came across a fact that SIBM as an institute formed in 1983. Now are you sure that SIBM started its operations in 1978...coz even I gave CET (when SIBM was a part of it in 1999) and very vividly remember that SIBM founding year was given as 1983 in the dte brochure. Can u enlighten me as to when the 1st batch passed out? Corroborate ur answer with names of atleast 5 alumni from the 1978-1980 batch...so that no-one will raise any doubts.

Do not take it otherwise...no intentions to start a debate here. I would just appreciate a candid answer as it matters to many.

Waitin for ur reply!!

Hi.

While I do not have exact details about the 1980 batch or any other, there is a team under the Students' Council, the Alumni Team, which handles such information. Alumni of SIBM are very much with us. Many of them are faculty with SIBM now, while the director himself is another.

The Alumni team is trying to locate the alumni from the periods prior to the 1990s, as very little updated contact info exists about them. I am unable to help you with more details, but rest assured that SIBM started in 1978. You can go to the sibm site, www.sibm.edu to confirm.

AFA corroboration goes... please tell me the exact reason you require the information. If valid, I can direct you to the Alumni team, who'll give you as much info as they consider required. The information database is very sensitive, and has to be kept secure. No one outside the Alumni team has access to it. Therefore, you must understand that giving the information for just candid replies or pacifying students-to-be is not a strong enough reason.

Specializations are not yet decided for the batch of 2008. That'll come somewhere in the middle of Sept. Ask the question then.

Comparision is not allowed on PG... hope you know that. I'm not going to get drawn into the debate which insti's better or worse. You yourself will have to go through the information about both instis, and decide for yourself. It's totally your call.

Hope you make the right choice for yourself.

had a sibm call from xat 2005 score..couldnot convert though as had a poor gd/pi..sibm's pi are for just 3-5 minutes..so i think gd's are main ..
anyways will apply again as snap is the only big xam where performance in gk counts (the only think apart from va/rc i am strong in)..discounting that iift's gk marks are very less
