Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Hi PUYS and RESPECTED SENIORS,

I have a different query. I am from science (medical) background. Already taken admission in MBA need suggestion what should I study before my college starts?? I am intereted in HR as specialization. If anyone feels posting here will be a spam please PM me or send the visitor message.

Thanks n Rgds
Priti

Hi,Priti what I feel is that since you are from medical background,so what you can do is before college starts you can check with some books of accounting to be familiar with the subject.Since in the first year you will have to study all the subjects and accounts is one of the major one,it will really help you.And I personally think you don't need to study anything specifically regarding HR now, since you will get to know a lot about that in the college itself, also in the 2nd year only you will get it as your specialization, and in the 1st year you will have to study all the common subjects,so I feel checking a bit accounts will help you know, also it will be easy for you to cope up with the subject when the college starts.Hope this helps

@vicky113 & amit4mba ---> THANKS A LOT GUYS!! 😃
ASK A QUESTION AT 1 AM AND U GET REPLIES SO SOON  WOW!! THIS IS ONLY POSSIBLE ON PG!!

@Mr.K ---> Krish Thanks a ton yaar 😃 I mentioned my preferred specialization just like that, it might change too lol , though chances seems to be very bleak... I wanted to know this only that being from science side what should i do right now that will help me to cope up well in the college. :)

P.S. Puys any more suggestions except accounts?

You being a science student accounts can actually be a nightmare .
I had such nightmares in my first year
Try to have a look at the journal entries, ledgers and cash books.....
They would surely help ...

I am sure rest all subjects will be covered in the lectures.Sab abhi se padh lia to whats the fun of attending lectures

All d best !

Priti you are most welcome dear.As I said before and amit also said, give a check to the basics of accounting like Journal,Ledger,Cash Book etc that will help. And believe me after college starts you won't get time from your studies life in a MBA college is very hectic:-(So abhi ke liye ye hi kaafi hain yaar, enjoy this free time a bit, because after college starts you are surely gonna miss these days.

Hi everyone i am srinivas.

Am currently working since 2006 after my B.E - Mech .Now am currently working with profile of project & planning management for Oil & Gas projects in a public sector company.

Now i am planning to do my MBA in any of the top institutes through CAT/GMAT.

Now if i join in year of 2011 giving GMAT/CAT this year -2010.I will be able to join MBA in the year of 2011 that means i will be having exp of around 5 years from 2006-2011.
So once i complete my 2 years of MBA suppose in finance ,i will again opt for working in any of the finance companies. Now i am not clear about my further job profile and designation in which i will be joining after my MBA in finance. Now

Please help me out in this scenario.

1.What designation / level will i get into the job after MBA .i.e. will i be equally designated as people who are already working after first doing their MBA and then 5 yrs experience. or will i be treated as a fresher. Will i get the 5 years of exp compensation while joining to new company's heirarchy.

2.For my above profile of work experience in Project & Planning Management for Oil & Gas Projects.Which is the stream in MBA that would suit me the best.

Please solve me out from this problem , i am n a big trouble. I have very less time to am 25 years old now... if i enter to MBA in 2011 i will be 26 yrs old.So please guide me out. I am in desperate help requirement.

Regards,

Srinivas:)

If you get into some financial services company, then yes most probably you would be treated as a fresher...in regards of salary too..because the thing is that ur prior work experience wouldn't add much value to a financial services profile...but lets say you get into finance division of a oil company, then you might not be treated as a fresher...

according to me, based on ur work experience, operations management would be the best field for you...NITIE is well known for its operations program..

you can also go for HR profiles..particularly multinational management...
i have done a little bit of french myself..and I found that while learning french one also learns a lot about french customs, their way of life etc..which comes in handy in international HR...

hi

I am a B.tech fresher and have been placed in Infy. I do not have much interest in coding/prgramming and wanna do my MBA this year. I tried last year too but didnt get any of the good b schools.
I have two queries:

1. What if i dont join infy and drop a year and prepare for MBA....is it a too big a risk?
2. Are there any certifications which can get me acquainted with finance? like.... NCFM or FLIP? which of them is better....

Tking into account d glitches dat took place in CAT dis year.. i can surely ssay its TOO MUCH of a risk, and again, ur workex will come TOO HANDY in B-skool interviews, apart 4m d money n confidence it ll provide u

But 4 dat i wud wanna know wen is ur joining date? so dat wud give an idea about how much work-ex u wud have wen u finally appear 4 interview

P.S. i too had LEAST interest in programming , i got selected 4 WIPRO

To Answer for the first question there are two options and both of them have there merits and demerits

If you choose to join Infosys
Merit

First hand experience of Corporate world , none is better in corporate training than Infosys(My Personal opninion though)
Profile Built Up

Demerits

Well Infosys current structure states an tranining period of 6-8 months , meaning literally no time for studies for CAT

Bond will follow suit for mostly 1 year so, dont have the exact information regardding latest bond policies i am sure you have a better idea

You hate coding

Second Option

Merits

Better preparation time

You can build up your profile by doing a few introductory modules of NCFM which are very basic and quiet easy to clear also, but that depends on your interest in finance

Demerits

CAT FIASCO :Even IIMs cant predict what will happen next year, so its quiet risky as has already been stated

May be if you dont end up in a college of your choice , you should be ready to give cat atleast another time(worst case scenario offcourse )

Hope you make the right decision for yourself, All d best

Anybody there to reply to my query as well

Hi,
I am Munish .I have done my Graduation in CSE from NIT Jalandhar ,passout of 2007.
I have been working with CSC for the past 3 yrs now.I aspire to do MBA from one of the best institutes of the country.
I have been working in an insurance project and have gained certain amount of domain knowledge about insurance.
If I get thru the top institute and opt for finance,I believe my 4 yrs which i will complete next year will be somewhat justified.I want to know whether I am thinking on right lines or not .
Thanks in Advance

Hello puys

I am in desperate need of your advice..
Well I gave CAT 2009 and it was my third attempt at cat.
My approx percentiles for the three years were:
CAT 07: 98
CAT 08: 96
CAT 09: 97

I completed my B.tech in 2008 and I have 23 months of work ex right now..in IT industry (but obviously-:) ).Now when I gave Cat2007 I gave it as a fresher, with a serious prep of 3-4 mnths. I had converted IMT G at that attempt but I did not join as I was adamant that i will only go for IIMs(with all due respect to IMT G,its a great institute anyday). Then my job started and I did not get time to study seriously for CAT 08 or 09 and neither did I fill any other forms through CAT but this year after the CAT result I filled IMT G out of desperation and converted it again. Now before the IMT i/v results came in,I had made up my mind that I will give my last and best shot at IIMs this year and also a shot at GMAT.But then I converted IMT and the dilemma started as my job has got really monotonous now,and i started considering joining IMT because it would help me to get out of this job and get me into smthng better. So I deposited the first installment. Now the real confusion starts while I was still in a dilemma of
joining IMT or giving CAT a last attempt,my manager called me to increase my confusions. He told me that our team was bringing in a new onsite process, and he has recommended my name in the first lot.I have been told that I would have to go to US in august for 6-12 months. Then come back and serve a one year bond with my company in India because they are paying me lucratively for this onsite thing. Although I resigned to join IMT after listening to this also but I still have this option as my manager has not approved my resignation since last two weeks because he wants me to reconsider this option and tell him by 15-16 june. Now should I join IMT G this year(and compensate with my IIM dream) or should I go for this lucrative onsite oppurtunity, come back and somehow drag my life with this IT job for one more year of bond( although I dont want to stay in IT job now) and give my GMAT in mean time and then go for my MBA from abroad after 4 years of work ex.

Guys please guide me asap..I need to take a decision asap..as the IMT session starts on 21 June..Please help me make a imformed decision!!

Thanks in advance

Hello all,

This is my first post here at Pagalguy forums. I went through the forum and found this to be an apt place for me to be. I do not know if this is the right place to post this, please excuse me if this is the wrong place for posting what I'm about to do.

I have done my BMS(Bachelor in Management Studies) and now I'm looking to give my CET exam(along with some others like NMAT) in Feb. 2011. I wish to do MBA from a reputed institute after that. The issue with me as that I am not sure what specialization to take. I was going through one of the threads in this forum where someone suggested that one gets a good idea about what suits him during the first year of MBA and one is in a better position to decide which specialization to take. I want to confirm this. Is it that in the first year we get to know about all the specializations? I'm very confused. I also want to know if Finance and Accounting are two different specializations. I'm very bad at accounts and to be honest I don't like that subject at all. If Finance and Accounting are different specializations, please tell me what is the difference between the two. Looking at the scope and demand for finance, I'm attracted to this field but I do not like accounts. So if finance means having good knowledge of accounting, my troubles would only aggravate. I have heard Finance involves studying about shares, mutual funds, insurance etc. Is that true? If yes, is it advisable to do some course in this line while I'm doing my CET classes?

I don't like the subject of accounts. I am also not an extrovert and I do not like to interact with people. This means I would not fit into marketing even though I have interest in advertising and can interact well.

I'm extremely confused... please tell me what I should do. Will I get a clear idea during my first year at a B-school about which specialization I should take or should I make up my mind now itself and start learning more about that particular specialization?

Yes, you would have loads of opportunities to earn while pursuing your MBA through various live projects that come along every now and then, and many of them would be paid as well. Of course, there'll be a selection procedure for each of them.
