Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Hey friends,
I need some guidance regarding my future course of action with respect to me doing an MBA,

To start with, I am an IT engineer and graduated in 2009 with 68% in B.E and 62.4% overall from Mumbai University. I attempted CAT, XAT and CET last season and my scores were 72%, 86%, 93% respectively without proper/least preparation. Thinking that if I attempt again I would do much better, I didn't apply in any B-school other than welingkar where I wasn't called for GD/PI.

So when I graduated I made a conscious decision of not looking for jobs as I wasn't placed through campus and continued with self- preparation for CAT and other exams. Till date I have attempted almost all major exams and my scores are IRMA-99, IIFT-29.14, JMET-above 13000 rank, XAT-78%, SNAP- 91, FMS- Not selected.

When I was preparing XAT I was quite sure of doing well since I was getting around 90-95% in mocks but made a mess on D-day and lost opportunities from LIBA, XIME,GIM,IFMR,etc. Speaking of other exams,
as per the various predictions I was expecting decent calls; from IRMA and SNAP related institutes(at least 3-4)..but at the end I have calls only from SCIT and XIMB-RM. I had a moderate GD/PI in SCIT and am awaiting my turn in XIMB-RM. Initially after I attempted CAT(38-39 questions with ~30 correct) I was expecting decent percentile i.e. ~90% and also decent calls.
Looking at spiraling results I am getting anxious each passing day and somehow I believe I won't be getting a good score in CAT. Also I have attempted other exams like NMAT(~83 with 85-90% accuracy) & MAT(103 attempts except GK) and would attempt CET and ATMA on coming sundays where I don't expect an outstanding score.

My problem is I am now caught in a dilemma. I am not quite sure of me getting in a good B-school which I had dreamed of and my inner voice doesn't allow me to look for an average B-school. Although I have my families support but the problem there is no one who can guide me through this terrible situation. Sometimes I feel I should rather look for a temporary job (which I am not sure of getting since my technical skills are just about average) and then go for another attempt in next season since it would be difficult for me to compromise with the B-school I might select ....

I know there are many people around just like me with neither job/calls....and expect them to come & share their views. Also, if any senior has been through such situation I would certainly like to hear from him...

sorry double post

Given your condition, I think it would be good if you gave CAT and other exams another shot next year. In the mean time, do try and get some job. Things are looking brighter each passing day and there's no reason to believe that you won't get any offers.

If your main goal is to get a seat in one of the top B-schools, just concentrate on that and keep looking for jobs on the side. If and when you get a job, it would surely boost your confidence, but even if you don't, keep concentrating on your main job.

The point to remember here is, don't be too dependent on one thing. You might be having a very keen interest in getting to a good B-school, getting an MBA degree, getting a good job etc., but you should also have something to fall back on. If you think you can concentrate on CAT studies alone and get a job later in case you don't make it, you should do it by all means, it's certainly not impossible. Many people take this risk and do succeed. But if you want to be on the safer side, have a backup at present as well. It's a choice that you have to make, and it's a critical one.

Choose a job based on your interest. If you're interested to work with an NGO, you'll do well there and it'll be a plus for you in your B-school interviews. However, even if you wish to join an IT firm and you do well, you can still make a positive impression in the interviews based on your work-experience. The main point is the way you justify your work-experience, where ever it may be.

Well to b very true nobody knows wether u can get into a gud B school or not other than U. The B.Tech GPA is gonna affect u , but thn it can always be overcome by the way of ur convincing power, if u can really show thm ur intrest in gymming or ny other activity thn u will sail thru, wen they talk about the acads just be truthful and accept tht u did not study.

Well I am in the same boat ( not the body building but ya share the same GPA ) and one of my frends made it oi IIM A with a GPA of 6.5

hi ranjit, :)

I can't say how good or bad the company is.
But, think. A company is making you sign 3 years of bond. This is TOO much. After joining you will be sure that you are not giving atleast the next 2 CATs and other exams. So, you are bound to lose your grip on the prep.

Moreover, who knows what happens 3 yrs after. You might be so busy with family and other responsibilities that MBA becomes a dream only.

On the other hand, if the company is really really good, than you can consider your options.

CHOOSE WISELY !!!!

Be truthful as far as possible. Any thing you make up, you'll only have to lie further to cover it up, which gives the panelists ample opportunities to catch you off guard. So whatever be the reason you quit, even if it's for the sole reason of preparing for CAT, just present it well enough and be prepared for any sort of cross questioning. Anyway, if you remain honest with them, cross questioning can't do too much wrong to you 😃

If you are really interested in doing MBA, then concentrate on 10th exams. Now a days there is huge weightage of 10th and 12th marks. So as of now, your aim should be to get maximum marks(as much as possible, but don't over pressurize your self) in 10th class. And then after 10th xams u can think of colleges...
