If u r planning to go to IT after MBA gor for 1 yr else 2 yrs..
IMO..2 yr MBA is gud than 1 yr as finishing 18 subjects in 12 months is a nightmare !!!
Hey Puys,
Am ato PG.
I am planning to do my MBA full time and have 3.5 yrs of work experience in IT.
I am currently in a dilemma thinking whether a 2 yr full time MBA or 1 yr executive MBA will be a good option.
Please help mewith your suggestions
It depends on how quickly you want to start earning again 😃 But if you're thinking of going for a 1 yr exec MBA, you should aim for the creme de la creme, viz. the IIMs, ISB or maybe even Great Lakes, but not any beyond these. Thus, getting into a good B-school to do an exec MBA is more difficult than getting admitted for a normal MBA.
The 1 yr course is a bit more hectic than the normal MBA program but you also save one year and you start earning sooner. But as I mentioned, you have much more choices in the 2 yr program than in the 1 yr program. By "much more choices", I mean the number of good colleges that you can apply to.
This is my first post on PG ,as I need some serious help with my career.
I am a B.E Mechanical passout, 2003 batch from Mumbai Univ. I have 2 years Work-ex in Mechanical engg field, then switched to IT in year 2006. Till date, I am working in IT as a System Admin for past 3 years in an IT MNC company.Till date, I have 5.5 years work-experience in total.
My Acads are as below:
SSC- 81%
DME-80%
BE 63%
I have given 4 non-chalant (i.e without full preparation) attempts for CAT,XAT,FMS from year 2004 till date,(always flunged in Quant) working in day/night shifts on my job.
This year, my Scorecard reads as below:
CAT 2009 awaiting results
XAT 2010 ashamed of my score in Quant!

FMS 2010- Did not get GD /PI call

NMAT/CET 2010 yet to appear
I am confused whether I should go for JBIMS or NMIMS after 5+ years work-experience for MBA,if ever I manage to convert the call.
As a result, I am unable to focus on the hardcore preparation required for these exams. Also,I am not financially strong to do an MBA from USA/UK or abroad univs.
In India, the 1 year executive options for me are ISB , IIM-B 1 year, IIM-C 1 year, which are quite tough to get into ;as they demand a very strong profile and has lot of competition there too.So I request you all intellectual Puys and experienced MBA alumni on PG to please solve my career dilemma, so that I can gain my focus on preparation and reach a conclusion.
P.S. For Moderators, request to please move my query to the appropriate thread,if I have posted at the wrong location. I do require some good guidance from all you guys.

Let me tell u one thing anusha maths is nightmare for students who doesn't belong to science background but there are many aspirants who have managed calls from gud b-skuls after putting in required effort. So it's a matter of religious practise. Try devoting 1-2 hrs for maths and first get ur basics right. Start from scratch. Take books of 9th or say 10th and get the fundamentals right. When u think u r confortable with fundas go beat the question up. This is the only way that can sail u thru.
To answer ur second question, I would say try something where ur proclivity lies. Don't go with the herd. Even if u get admission in MBA u won't be able to survive there for 2 years if u don't have burning desire for it. Even in IIM's some student back off coz of pressure. So I would suggest u do something which u like or u like to study. As u mentioned economics is ur fav subject so try exploring the vast field of economics. U wuld surely gauge the potential of economics. As fas as colleges are concerned I am not sure of it much as I don't have any idea abt that.
I saw ur query so wanted to enlighten u. If u need further clarification drop me a pm. Take Care. Bye
@coolabhijeet8
try for isb and all pgp executive courses...if u dont make it go for part time mba..
@Theone
Thanks for ur quick reply!!But,I also do need to know whether JBIMS -MMS stands a good option for me or not? (as I would be appearing for CET 2010 in coming weeks).Should I seriously give best try for JBIMS with my profile stated as above?
Also,I am thinking of 'domain shift' or 'changing stream after MBA', so I feel going for part time MBA is not an option for me.
Hello Puys,
I am an ardent fan of PG. This website provides excellent details and info for all the people aspiring for a career in Management.
Kudos & hats off to all the people behind this
Ok. Lets start with my issue.
I am an IT professional working in a MNC almost for the past 4 years on Java,J2EE technologies. Now, my real concern is whether a pure technical career is possible in India? Even if its possible, i dont think it will be very rewarding & challenging with that of the one in the US or UK.
Considering the fact that i am in the middle of my career, i am now really confused as to what to do? Cant go for an MBA now, parents are searching for an alliance for me now
.
So. i request people who are working as Tech Leads/Architect's in IT companies to please give me some advice on my career advancement.
Thanks a lot for your help!
Cheers,
Raghu
It depends on what you want from ur career. If architecture is what interests you then you should continue with this. Architects are in good demand in all IT cos. here and with more offshoring happening, 'good' work should flow from US/ Europe to India.
If on the other hand, you are more interested in seeing the business side of IT or otherwise, then you should plan for an MBA. Dont jump to an MBA just because its a fashion statement and e'bdy else seems to be doing it.

I think you should spend another year preparing and give your best shot in the MBA exams then. Don't see a point why you should rush to get in an MBA college right now.
@coolabhijit8
ok then give ur best shot at cet and get in jbims...
friends,
one problem is their for me, presently i live in chennai. but my house owner telling me to vacate the house. so i m shifting to delhi. but the problem is in cat registration i have given chennai adress only. so i may not be able to get cat original score card, plz suggest some help
I would suggest that you give a letter to the post office of your area to either redirect the letter to your new address or authorise a friend of yours to collect all your mail from the post office. It should work.
actually the whole floor of my building is vacated already so i dont have any gud friend left in building.wil post office authorities entertain such plea of redirecting the letter to delhi adress.if it is possible then i vl go to po today only

The post office people generally accept two requests easily - one of safe custody and the other is the facility of allowing someone else to collect your letters. Do meet the Post Master in person and explain the issue. I am sure he will be able to help.

hi buddy,
it totally depends on you how you want to go for preprn ...
if you feel that work timings and schedule won't permit you to prepare well.... you can leave the job and crack cat and other exams ....
but, if you feel your job has limited work and you will be able to manage studies with job, you should continue the job as it will help you in terms of work ex during calls from various institutes. .... but keep one thing in mind, that after office, you will have to give sometime to studies consistently ( if you are preparing for first time )
ps: i have done my preprn with job and few of my frns left the job and prepare ... so, it's purely your call depending on your work pressure ..
all the best!
to PG.
