Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

@the_human_in_u

You don't have to lie about your work-ex just coz of your Bond.Explain it to the panelists like you did here better than the other options you cited.Farming and all will be added points, but do mention about your work-ex..you are lucky to have it in such times..! My take.

PLZ ADDRESS THIS..........

i have been working in a MNC for past 6 months...i wrote JMET and have a good rank and chance of me converting the rank is good...but this MNC has a bond and i am going to break it(the bond amount is huge and i cant pay it)....so i have not shown my work ex in the form....Now when the interviewer asks what i have been doing for past 6 months what should i say???? If i say about any NGO does it need any certi ??? can i say i have been in my village doing farming(actually i love farming and every year for 1 month i help in farming)........
THANKS

You can still prove your work-ex by showing your joining letter and salary slips of the last couple of months. About breaking your bond, I won't say it's advisable. Recently there was a case during our placement season that one candidate who was through in all the rounds was not taken just because he had worked in that company earlier and had broken their bond.
hi guys i came to this forum looking for some advice.i hope i posted at the right place.the thing is that i have always been a good student averaging well above 80% in my 10th and +2 boards(87 and 84 respectively).but what happened is that after +2 i gave the entrance exams and i got thru to manipal university.now i thought that manipal was a very expensive college and the placements arent that great there.
so i decided not to join manipal and give a drop.in my drop year i did decently.i caame in the eml of iitjee got an ok rank in aieee aand did quite well in wbjee and comedk etc.with my ranks i could have easily got a good college in either bangalore(like bms ms ramaiah) or thru aieee(bit patna dr mgr or some low nit like raipur etc)but i decided to go for brand name and via my wbjee rank
i enrolled myself in jadavpur university for the pharmaceutical technology course.i had this idea that even if you get a bad stream but study in a good college you will get a good job.and as you know jadavpur is one of the most premier engg colleges in india(ranked 12th just after iits).but after i took admission i found out that pharmacy is areally bad career option.firstly one does not get a good job after doing b pharma.
the salary is in the 5000-10000 monthly range.its a research based career option where ull have to study a lot for very little gains.even after further degrees like m pharm career options are very bleak.so the thing is i filled up the wbjee form for this year so that i could give it one more time and perhaps get a good course in jadavpur university itself.but the thing is if i do change after this year there will be a two year gap between
my +2 ad college.something that is seen i very bad light these days especially after iit have changed their rules about the number of attempts.id also say that most of you would advise me to go for mba and i know i can do it but the thing is that i dont consider mba to be a very good option for an engineer because your technical knowledge wont be of much use thereafter.and also the engg students who go for mba are mostly the ones who study in a poor
college or dont get good marks in engg and hence dont get jobs.so i want to know that if i change this year will i get a good job after my 2 year gap because i know that it is somewhat of a hindrance in getting jobs.or should i just go forward with my course and do mba thereafter.id also like to point out that i dont care much as to what i study as long as i get a good job.please do advise guys

guys please reply to my query

Hi Puys,
I want to know how much will a gap in work ex affect my chances of getting thru to a good B school.
I plan to quit my job around june and dedicate myself completely to CAT prep. This would create a Gap of almost 8-9 months when i start gettin calls.I have a work ex of 3 years with a sw firm.
Please advise if wht i am doing is right,
Scores this year with exactly 2 months prep.
IIFT : 35 :(
JMET:59
SNAP:93

Well dude...any one at this point of time would have given you the same advice to go for MBA.....but since you have some wrong reservations about this(marked in bold), its pretty difficult for any one to say....I guess you have a very uncanny reason:lookround::lookround: for guys to go for an MBA degree....If you could read some 3-4 forums of this pagalguy(no need to read more than 3-4),you'll get to know how many guys with different and rather very strong profile(with workex>2-5years) are dying to get into these B-schools..the reasons is not that they are from bad colleges or their salary is low...but coz MBA gives you the extra thing to excel in your life(both personally and professionally)...enough gyan on this I guess....
now coming back to your query-If you are confident to crack the entrance test this time with good rank, go for it...believe me 2 year gap will not create any hurdle in your selection for any good company....coz the company take you only on the basis of talent and any gap of 1-2 year is not that important....I've seen this in my college....a guy with 3 years gap was selected for a company(power sector giant) with really very high package.....rest all is your call!!!

well u may be right about why people do mba but my point of reasoning is that if people get a good job after undergrad(especially engineers)then why do they have to for mba???also what is the point of the tehnial knowledge that u have aquired in engg if u r goin to do mba???
but anyhow ur reply was useful but in u might have done college quite a few years ago how a 2 year gap is relevent in the present day scenario with iit giving only two attempts u might not know that
i have just a bit of query . I am an mba aspirant but uptil now the season has not being that satifactory , my profile goes

10 (88.34%)
12(75.4%)
graduation with physics (61.5%) calcutta univ
post grad (54%)
i have another negative in my CV
16 months gap after post grad(it is not that i was sitting idly and doing nothing but have not done any full time course or full time work)
in that 16 months gap i had volunteered with an NGO , where i am joining full time now

with "this " profile does it makes enough sense for me to target the top 12 b schools in india next year?WHY I WANT TO DO MBA IS CLEAR TO ME . pls suggest someon or i sha;; settle with any cool bank job etc

good to see you are clear about why you want to do MBA...coz this is the question which most of the aspirants did't have any answer to till their interview days and many screw their chances for the lack of clarity on that only....and yes it make all the sense for you to target top 12 b schools if you have a gr8 percentile and could justify the above mentioned question....now coming back to your 16 months gap-dude we all live in this democratic and free INDIA where any one is free to do the job he gets satisfied in doing....and since you are a full time employee in that NGO(after being committed for 16 months),you can show this and this would really fetch you a lots of +ve point.....you can make stories that you were not satisfied with the profile being offered to you(in job) and that you really want to contribute to the society and wanted to do stuffs which gives you satisfaction

Hi Pagal guys and gals,
In what must be the tradition for new members here, I'll also start with the plea, "Pls help me".
I am a techie, currently based in Singapore in a dead end IT(Mainframe) job. My career is totally stalled and its currently going nowhere. Thats when the 3 letters M-B-A suddenly popped into my head.
I want to move out of my current technology domain, however I have 7 yrs exp in this field, and I feel that would count against me if I tried to move to a totally different line.
Another problem is I don't know what I want other than a fat pay package.
I know IB and finance is the hottest thing now in Singapore, despite the recession. junior managers easily pull in 250K SGD (incl bonuses). While IT middle managers in MNCs get only around 80-120K.
I used to hear that Management consulting used to be quite in demand in the early 2000's but i have no idea what that is and whether it will suit me.
I plan to give my GMAT in the a couple of months, but i'd like to find out more about life after an MBA.
So hope you folks here can provide me some advice.

Thanks in advance

hello puys,

I have been reading forums on a variety of topics, and I must say, PG rocks.

Coming to my query, as the title says "I am confused what to do!"

My current scenario:-
I have completed Masters in Biotechnology. I have a keen interest in teaching(been doing that since my bachelor's - 5 years now).

I want to give my best shot at CAT'10 and other exams that follow. I am determined that I would get through some major exams. I have been teaching in an Institute that trains students for IIT-JEE exam(although my job is to teach CBSE students & not IIT JEE aspirants). This job, although in the evenings, pays me very well (well above 3lpa).

My Dilemma:-
Option 1:- Should I stick to this? Will I be questioned about why not full time job. I suppose, I dont think il get time to prepare (honestly)

I am doing nothings in the mornings. I also have plans to work with an NGO (again into teaching.)

Option 2:-
Should I leave this teaching thing, get into a BPO or Backend prosess, completely unrelated to my education. But il at least have a work-ex of 18 months before getting admitted into a B-School.

What i Feel:-
I feel that, teaching, being my passion, I should persue it, both in the Institute and with the NGO. This would add some extra curriculars to my profile.

I am at cross-roads puys. I would greatly appreciate your suggestions considering the 2 options.

Regards

Vignesh

Hi Everyone,

I am working with an IT company(technical support Work, though i m an IT engineer) with adhoc work time. I will be taking CAT this year. I have doubt that should i leave my job to give MBA a full try this year ( any A grade college is good) or continue with job and study.. Leaving the job will create a gap of arnd 7-8 mnths till i start getting calls. But the job on whole is nt adding value to my CV also.

As such working i am not gaining any technical knowledge as its a support work.. I am having an exp of 1 year ..

Can someone advise me ...

Hi Puys,

I am a Bsc(Hons) Comp Sc. guy and have passed out in 2009. I got a job as a portfolio analyst in a UK based Debt Investment firm with a ctc of Rs 5 lakh per annum. However my future aim is MBA frm a gud b-school.
ALthough my company's business may involve huge amt of calling(which obviously I will not be doing since I am a portfolio analyst) and moreover crudely speaking it is a debt collection business with a new dimension attached to it, will it be viewed with raised eyebrows during say an IIM interview that I am working in a BPO like environment even though my work is abt analysis and risk management blah blah.... Puys please answer...very urgent

hey..i dont think you should get worried about interviewer's thinking negative about you considering you are working in a BPO like environment. As long as you can prove that you have learnt something in that company or that kind of an environment, i dont think they would a reason not to select you. Moreover, its all about framing your answers in such a way that the negative side about your work can be ignored. So dnt worry too much about this. Just prepare well and im sure you'll get through your dream college. All the best!

If you're talking in terms of a government bank, I would say that an MBA finance would have a better chance at bagging a better profile and/or package. I'm saying this despite knowing quite a few MBA students appearing for Bank PO exams this year :)

POs would get a chance to work in general banking, whereas MBA Finance grads have a better chance of getting a more specialized role as their first thing. Of course, there could be some level of general banking that even the MBA grads would have to do, but they would be more responsible for their own role.

Besides, they would be joining at a scale higher than the POs and in some cases, even a couple of scales higher. So that saves quite a few years for the MBA grads. Needless to say, that they would be earning a bit more at the start.

However, having said all this, there are always exceptions and some POs might grow faster by taking the internal exams etc. whereas the MBA grads might be taking their own sweet time 😃 But if you're looking in terms of a start, I guess an MBA grad has a better chance of a better profile/package than a PO.

PS: All this is written keeping in mind a government bank. This is because of two reasons:

1. For private banks, don't think there's any fixed timeline of growth. Whoever performs, grows, and so does his profile/package.
2. I have been placed through campus in one of the government banks as an MBA Finance grad, so this comes from the knowledge that I have gained from talking to some people.

hello puys,

i would appreciate if my query is answered pretty soon plz

Hi everyone,

I am new around here, posted this somewhere else, but moving it to the right section.

Its about a friend who has done her Masters (MBA) in Marketing from Mumbai University, from an average college after graduating in Science (Chemistry) from the same university. She intends to move to US and settle there in the future. What I would like to ask is:

How can she go about it?
What are possible options and available avenues for her?
(She would turn 25 this year)

Considering that she wants to make her career in the field of Pharma/Biotech etc., would it make sense to opt for a Phd abroad, say in US...?? If yes, then what are the subjects available? Any information center that she can approach? Info on the procedure, cost involved etc. would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
L!qu!d

Friends I want to do a course in Export Import Management from Foreign Trade Development Council which is a registered Trade body under the Society Act Govt. Of Punjab . The body is a member under NTPC & ITPO National Centre for Trade Information, Govt. Of India New Delhi. It is a 3 month , 3 days a week course.

The description Says" Three Months Career oriented diploma based on theory & practical knowledge, workshops, case studiesin Export(marketing, Policies, Grants Procedures, Documentation, Excise ,Customs, Banking, EPCG, etc.)"

My question is:- will it be helpful for me in the long run( from MBA perspective)?
will it help for Interviews as an additional qualification ?
Since it will be starting on Feb. 8 it will only be completed by April.

Their website is http://ftdc.webs.com/

PS:- Do not confuse it With FTDC delhi (that is a seperate body)
PPS :- I have just copied the details from the newspaper advertisement.
Inputs from Seniors in International Business will be welcomed . 😃
