Now the problem is , I am weak in english ... there is no problem in understanding , but in conversation ... So should I prepare for CAT 2010 or should I take a year gap after my BE to prepare for CAT2011 ?? If I choose second option , again problem arises , my DAD is going to retire in 2 years , after tht I'll have to start earning asap ...

Please help guys ...

Guy ,
I wanna know during GD/PI call what work EX docments are generally required coz the company where i wrk dont give salary slip n i heard some colleges require salary slips also, if some one gets exp certificate stating the tenure of work will it be ok and the other thing is after the admission will the final experience letter be ok or still salary slips required and what is the case for companies which come for placements do they also say for salry slips or only work ex certificate....

Dude in my opinion you must target for CAT 2010..well even your engineering % is around 50 and you are not so great in English, you always have the the time to work on that and 1 year is not a less time considering this...Dude the IIM guys are there to select future managers and not guys for a PhD in English...accepted that Good English is a criteria(but not the sole criteria)for selection..As far as you are able to express yourself with simple and lucid english, rest assured you are in safe zone...So don't get feared by high sounding(ornamental)english stuffs....prepare with full confidence and a positive frame of mind...rest all things will take care of themselves...

Hello Everybody,
This is my first post in the forum. I am Suddhashil Ghosh, completed my B-Tech from Dr.B.C.Roy Engg College, Durgapur in Computer Science & Engineering. Then I have started career in Web Developement & in the same domain since last 2.7 Yrs. My specialization is in PHP, MySQL & Joomla.

I have started also pursuing MBA from NIBM, Chennai in the year 2008. Presently I in final semester & the fianl exam will be held on this May'2010. In NIBM one has to chose two specialization in 2nd & 4th semester. I have chosen Operations Management in the 2nd & International Trade Management in the final semester.

Now, I have come to know NIBM will not provide any campusing facility. So, my question is:
1. Is there any job available for me based on this MBA degree as I am pursing it in correspondence?
2. If yes, which company should I look for?
3. When I ll be passed out my corporate experience will be around 3 years, so, will that be counted as "Experience" if I am going to be selected on my MBA degree basis?
4. Do the degree help me to be domain oriented? Means I am basically an IT career oriented guy, so will this degree help me to achieve the TL or Delivery Manager post in MNCs?
5. What kind of package is given to this kind of selection?

Hope you will be kind enough to spend a little part of your valuable time to read this thread & revert me back. Seeking all your help. Thanks in advance.

Hi Puys,

I had done my graduation in Mech engg and working in CTS for the past 2 years. I want to do MBA(finance). I am not willing to continue in IT field because i couldn't concentrate on MBA exams due to lot of stress and hectic work in my proj.Personally i dont like IT.
Will Public sector hinders my chances of getting MBA Seat/good placement??

First of all after how much experience you want to go for MBA ?
If suppose it is after 2-3 more years so that u can show ur BHEL/SAIL exp then it would be good otherwise its better to stick to current company.

Coming to your question, your going in public sector wont affect when you apply for MBA as long as you are able to explain the transition.
Yes, don't leave your job just like that as it would say negative for your profile. You can try switching to diff project/company which wont hinder your progression... Public sector wont hinder your chances of getting MBA and good placements rather it will seperate your profile from regular Indian IT Pool. Hope it helps !

Dont take gap.. start preparing for this year's CAT and keep 2011 CAT in buffer..Try giving interviews for job also ..would help building your english as well as confidence..
There is a guy ..one of my close friend.. he used to get 4-5 backs in all semesters.. had around 60% in eng...got serious in 3rd year.. u wont believe..currently he is final year student of IIM-K

Hello everybody,

I am a student of Engineering and in pre-final year. I am giving CAT this year and working for it. I have a question in my mind. After MBA, will my engineering knowledgebe left unused?

Is there any specialization or some specific area in Management where I can use my knowledge of science and tech. also?

Also, I've heard there is a stream known as Engineering Management. But I am not getting any more information about that. Please someone tell me about that. what is it all about and what kind of job does one get and which good college does provide that degree?

One more thing, Is MBA from IIT's have something related to engineering?

Please help me solve my queries, my main problem remains in the first paragraph but do try to solve all the doubts...

thanks a lot in advance......

Buddy.. I got your question... First of all if you want to be in Techie field itself , then MBA would not really be a wise option at this point of time.. I am sorry as even I don't have much knowledge of this stream "engineering management".. there is something called as IT-Consulting but that is far different than techie stuff.. more of manager.. less of techie things..
Well if you want to be in techie thing, the best way what I would suggest is join some IT company.. take good work-ex there.. and you can go for some management course by companies.. as they always have tie-ups with some big schools..
Secondly, you can always do a executive-MBA.. would help u keep in ur domain...
MBA from IIT has nothing to do with Engineering..
An MBA would surely launch you far from engineering into the world of finance, marketing, hr, consulting, operations, entrepreneurship, management, non-profit etc..

Sorry for this but as u r an engineer..finance companies would be little reluctant to take you.. because HRs would prefer guys from commerce/MBA than an engineer for a finance role (degrees are stressed first than talent my friend- I am saying this from my personal corporate experience)
At this point I would suggest :
1- Either go for MBA
2- Can join some company and there get in touch with high management regarding a profile change (but believe me this is very difficult)
3- If you have made your mind that you have to go for finance job only and that too with an engineering background, try to strengthen your profile by giving some exams like CFA or NCFM..

Hello all,

I require some guidance: My profile is as follows:

Education B.E(Mech) SSIT / Visvesvaraiah Tech univ 77.6% , 12th-79.6% CBSE, 10th-83.8% CBSE
Work Ex till date:
3 yr (L&T;) Design Engineer ---- 1 month I Ex (Engineering Risk Assessment)
1 yr (**) Design Enginner ---- Approx 10 months I Ex (Design)
Current Occupation - Design Engineer

I am aiming for top 15 colleges in India. Aiming to start my MBA- 2011 (June) (So my work ex wil be 5.5 yrs)
My queries are as follows:
1) What will be a decent CAT percentile with my profile to get a call from some good colleges.
2) Some colleges which offer a decent lateral placement facility? Most of the top colleges say they offer the same but I am not sure to what extent.
3) my EC is weak. What should I do to improve that if i gt to aim for ISB through GMAT?
4) I prefer a normal 2 year MBA over a 1 year Executive MBA with my point of view being that i can learn properly instead of squeezing things. Also I think it will help me better better to switch to operations/marketing which is different from current profile. Will a 5 year work ex. be a spoiler at interviews at some colleges if i apply for normal MBA as i read in some place that colleges prefer 2-3 year ex. ?

Thanks Puys ... CAT 2010 , here i come

Pardon me but I have few queries more :
# I would like to work in automobile field , and as I am doing my Mech Engg form Detroit of East (Pune) , can somebody tell me which MBA will land me in Automobile sector ??
# Does work experience count in MBA?? Even if it does so , i dont think i'll be getting good campus placement @ 50-55 % in BE , So if I do MBA right after my BE , how will be the placement scenario after MBA ??
# I read somewhere about Engineering management , what is that ?? and is it related to Automobile sector ?

thanks in advance πŸ˜ƒ

Brandwise IBM is king !!! But onsite wise I think TCS has advantage ..
Onsite helps a lot for bolstering ur MBA app..
If somehow u can figure out the onsite chances in the location u joining then u can quickly make your decision...
On the flip side.. ppl also see where they will get more time to prepare for MBA.. there are many aspects to see but i dont think going for anyone would really affect your progress in future.. it all depends upon ur GMAT score, essays and most important the WORK you do in ur job.. profile gets enriched with that only !!

1. Is it advisable to quit job now and start preparing for the CAT-2010 ??
2. Can seniors tell if there will be trouble in interviews at later stages.?
3. I got experience of 3 yrs now..now do i clear the min.weightage for
the experience holders during the selection process.?
4. For sure i wont be selected in a good B-school as not getting time here
in this company...shall i switch to some other firm and then start preparing ...?

Never quit job, it always fades your profile.. u gotta answer that in your Interview.. it will make negative impression that when u cant cope with your job .. how will u do with exhaustive MBA curriculum.
Yes.. when placements starts.. above 24 months are considered as laterals (I got to hear this from one of my friend in IIM-K.. as he was having exp of 23 months)
yep.. u can try switching to different project or diff company also..
