Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

hi..

i was actually working in a company after my BE. Got trained there for nearly 5 months. But got a job in my hometown.. much better than the previous one. I m an MBA enthusiast planning to start my course in the year 2010. I thought joining the new job in my hometown would be of least risk as i can continue in the job if i don get thru any good b-school this year.
So if I get thru a b-school in yr 2010, will my work ex from dec-may count or will it be useless as it ll be less than an year?

pl help!

Although interview panelists would probably consider the 5 month stint at your first company too short a period to gain good experience, in order to score the brownie points in terms of months of experience - a common factor used to assess candidates, you should have the joining letter, leaving certificate and other papers like payslips etc. from your previous comp.

This is the reason why even when people quit their jobs while on probation, they are ready to pay bucks to the employer to get these documents out.

heyya guys..
am in a lil dillema...am in my 2nd yr of engineering...n a serious aspirant for CAT....i never really chose for engineering truly frm heart...you can say it ws the result of peer pressure...the thn situations...the so called ''scope'' factors(which werent true,i realize now..)..tht i chose maths as mah sub and entered engg...

n now it really becomes hellish to study da engg subjects...i am waiting 4 da moment 3rd yr begins and i start my CAT prep...something i truly wanna do frm heart...but am not focussing properly on my Graduation percentage...sometimes i just cant!!:banghead:

Suggest something guys...Is the graduation good score really important in determining your entry into IIM...moreover my 10 n 12th percentage is 87 and 68 respectively...the poor 12th class percentage...
my engg branch is electronics n telecomm..
Helpppp!!!:-(

a) Yes, bachelor's degree marks IS important to get into MBA. The weightage applied to it may vary from college to college. But as you uttered IIMs, its very very important there.

b) CAT, MBA will not help you escape maths/techy subjects. If you find engg a droll, you'll most probably feel the same about MBA entrance prep and MBA acads as well. Not that the syllabus is the same, but the mindset required for their prep would might not match your current state.

I strongly advise you do not make the second mistake in your life by taking up MBA prep just because your peers are doing the same. Find your interests; there are many avenues you can select after passing out and excel in them. eg: journalism, media, sales to name a few.

For now, enjoy your college days and try to ace your exams.
Studying is always a pain dude, whether you like it or not.

@ above :o
i am nt able to focus onto my engg becoz am not INTERESTED in it..it isnt tht i wanna run away frm studies or sumthing...i can really work hard for CAT prep...becoz tht would be sumthing i really want...

acads dont get much of my time..all that I think of, involve words, editorials, music, fiction, extra-curricular
events and 'management' as a field appeals to me!

but i have to take care of grad percentage as well...apart from the CAT prep n other stuff..thts wht mah point is..

I need some help in making a career decision....

the thing is that i got into Goldman Sachs as an Operations Analyst full time in the recent campus placement, now before that happened i was planning to do a Masters course in UK in Msc Management or MSc international management.
I have applied to Manchester Business School , Cass Business School, Aston Business School, to HEC Paris, LSE and LBS....im quite sure that i might be able to get into most of the colleges ive mentioned.
After masters i would have worked a few years and then applied for a MBA.

Now since ive got GS i dont know what to choose, stick with the plan above or work in GS for 3 yrs and apply directly to a MBA.

someone please suggest on what to do ...does the masters tip the scales in its favor, keeping in mind that it costs a lot, need to find a good job after 1yr....

Thanks in advance

Hi everyone .I am selected as PO in Federal bank Po exam.Currently i am working in TCS (1yr and 3 months).I am confused whether to leave the present job or not.Could anyone give me advice regarding this.My aim is to get into one among the top ten mba colleges. Will a shift to banking carreer help me...?

it depends on ur career interests... if ur interested in mba fin..it makes sense to switch...

Need some advice regarding the profile...

I would appreciate the views on my profile which I feel is extremely bad :banghead: but still I want to know whether I should stop targetting IIMs and other top B schools which look for overall good profile...

In one of the threads on PG about the IIM call getters... I found everybody having a great profile especially their acads in X and XII.

X- 64, XII- 68, BCA - 66, 1 year Gap after BCA, MCA - 81

Work Ex: arnd 2 years
6 months contractual IT job in an MNC..
7 months in a big Telecom Company...
1 year in govt sector(a gazetted post) .

all exp. in IT job profile...

How is the govt job experience considered while deciding the gd/pi calls by the iims..... is it not equally comparable with private sector exp.

I believe I have some valid reasons for my bad profile and can convince the panel to certain level...
but the question is with such a profile will I ever get a PI call for the explanation.... even if I score well in CAT.

Plz reply as I am very confused abt my eligibility...

evn i have da above queries...
X--87%
XII--68%
n am in mah 2nd yr of engg...3rd sem..wud ya suggest me to work my best for my grad percentage as well apart frm CAT prep...
wud da poor XII class percentage have a very adversing effect on the call for PI evn if i score well in CAT...

There are many good b-schools(top 10)....if you get good scores in CAT...u are sure to get a handfull of calls from top b-schools ...just relax and prepare for the entrance exams with dedication and build your profile too.

if I am aiming for da Top Bschools...IIMB and IIMA...thn wid da low 12th percentage wud i ever get a PI call...in tht case ..should i concentrate alot on my engg grades...

hiiii i have currently joined bosch as a fresher but the work and the city are not suiting me.....so i wanted to change job...i have an offer from tcs and am thinking of joining it...does my company's brand name matters during application for mba abroad...or is it only the work experience and kind of work that matters...i have worked only for 6 months...i plan to apply in europe and singapore business schools after 2-3 years.....anyone having any knowledge please guide me i have to decide...

Hello guys, I'm a final yr engg student who has taken CAT this year & today got selected in CTS and INFOSYS both thru campus

recruitment. We'll have to choose one by tomorrow noon. I want to know which company I should join if I want to do MBA next in

view of a "deferred success" this year. Please (preferably experienced) people advise which company to join. The difference in

salaries is negligible. But the there is a service bond of 2.2L in Infy which is bothering me. Please also tell me about the

opprotunities of self-study(for CAT) in these 2 companies.

As far as I've gathered till now, pros of cons are as follows:

1. INFY reputation better than CTS
2. INFY salary slightly higher.
3. INFY training far better & admired by other companies.
4. Other companies take former INFY employees more readily.
4. CTS less workload (more opportunity for studies/mocks)
5. No bond in CTS

Please enlighten seniors!

Hi there,

I would suggest any day to "Go for Cognizant". Its the best place to be. I have been wih Cognizant for the past 3 years now. But the reason is "NOT THE LESS WORKLOAD" as u said, mainly because of their HR policy and no major hierarchy in the organisational structure, which i would say u cannot find in any other Indian companies.

I first posted in a separate thread but posted here as adviced by a senior user.

I am a B.Tech in IT currently working in Java/ J2EE for almost 3 years. I have been planning to do and MBA for sometime now but could not really get through because in previous year I had to go out side of test city just before the exams and this year I'm skeptical about my level of preparations because of being too much busy with work.(I never wanted to ignore the job at hand to prepare)

I would like some advice regarding the following matters.

1) Will it be of any use if I shift to ERP? I am good in my domain - Java/J2EE but I was thinking of moving to ERP specially if that will help me in my persuasion in MBA or later stage , even if that will mean I will get out of comfort zone and start over.

B) I was inclined towards marketing and finance but practically I don't have any experience in the same. I was wondering if I should stick to IT-Systems if I go for an MBA? If you guys can suggest me some books/ sources which will enable me to take an informed decision - whether I will be able to adopt to the new fields.

I understand this was a long post but any feedback/ suggestion will be immensely helpful.

Thanks and regards,
Andrew

hello Friends,

I require your help in taking an important decision of my professional life. I want to do MBA in consultancy and then leverage my experience in IT/Telecom.

1. Where can I get the list of top 20 universities offering MBA in consultancy?
2. Is there any benefit in terms of salary and work, if one does MBA from outside India as opposed to doing it from here?
3. Does the foreign universities offer scholarship to MBA aspirants? I know for MS or PHD, they offer full schol.
4. Any suggestions about colleges I could look about. I am dependent 70% on scholarship and 30% on my own resources.

Thanks for your time. Please do reply.
