Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

hi guys

i hve been trying to break into some gud bschool for past few years but sometimes money or sometimes failure 2 get admits stopped me
am wrking for 4-5 years as a test{something similar to high school maths teacher} instructor.i am in India.
i will be 28 by next year with no hopes of high profile college admission but just a moderate{least expensive} ms finance from somewhere

i want to ask if i somehow complete cfa level I along with ms finance then wld i have a chance to make it ti an ib/corp fin/fin consulting or say any finance job with some managerial role?
i have a previous degree in economics with gud grades but college wasnt a top shot, just like a community college n all education is anything but practically relevant,it was like cram up theories and get marks,no eviews stata sas.
i have always been a hard working sudent but got enlightenment regarding career a bit late

however i have a moderate gmat 680 {49 q, 33 verbal}
and i feel i can get into 1 year ms corporate finance programes{not lbs oxbridge hec etc but just some second tier bschools like edhec ,grenobble in france,Aston in uk or SUNY buffalo etc etc}

wld u suggest me to invest into such education when looking at my career aspirations??my parents will support me for education but its their hard earned money and I donn wanna waste it if I know beforehand that results ll be null coz we are just a lower middleclass family?
So I would like to ask is it possible to come out with a job after such graduate in programs with no previous wrk ex of fin and age of 29 by then 2011 !!!!!!!!!?
i am wishing to recover through a ms finance program
but the money invested isnt mine
so i only want my parents to do that if i cld get them atleast the investment back,,rest i want nothing except a good respectable job
i even scored cat in 2006 and 2007 scored 97.something and 96.something but yet ended nowhere
but i m in real dilemma right now so wanting some advice from seniors in trms of education and work

thanx for your patience to read my post.
I really need some sincere advice.

Hi puys..... :w00t:
I am in big confusion, regarding my career.

My profile:
X - 82% (CBSE)
XII - 73% (CBSE)
Drop - One year gap for engg. exams prep.
B.Tech - 61% (Govt. Engg. College, Ajmer) (Computer Engg.) - 2010 Batch

Extra-Curricular - Head, College Quiz Club
Won gaming and quiz competitions in college

Problem:
The placement scenario in our college is poor. I am not very hopeful of getting anything more than 1.2 lac package in some unknown company.
I want to have some work-ex, and then go for MBA.
What are my chances? If a score 98+ in CAT '10 will I be able to get through a very good school? Will the work-ex be given weightage?
This year I gave only CAT and MAT.

I joined only CL test series.
As per percentile predictors - I will score around 80-85 %ile in CAT, and 97 %ile in MAT. this year CAT was kind of joke for me. I didn't even touched the books. Just gave mocks, even without going through basics or any kind of prep :drinking:

Should I go for MBA this year only?
Will he competition get tougher next year?

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Coming to kill the CAT in 2010
Will surely make next time.

Hi,

I'm generally very supportive of those aiming high and having the potential to reach there. Read my other posts when you have the time, if you want to verify if that is true. But this post will be an exception. If I'm crossing my limits, bada bhai samajh kar maaf kar dena.

First a little background. I come from a middle class family too. I struggled for several years before I managed to get into a top b-school. I was older than you when I got in. So when I say I understand your situation, I'm not exaggerating.

There was a basic difference in my thought process, though. I felt my parents had given me much more than basic education. And at that point in time, I had no option but to depend on them for support. However, for higher education I knew it had to be self-financed - through savings, through loans or through scholarships. There was absolutely no way I wanted to burden my parents for this. It took me a while to get there, but I did.

I feel, your story starts off on the wrong foot. You've expressed concern for your parents and their hard-earned money. But your proposed actions are in direct conflict with your intentions. your folks did not have an MBA, they did not go abroad for higher studies. They stayed back here and did the best they could to ensure you get what they didn't.

My only advice to you is this. The MBA isn't just about money. It's about maturity, independence and responsibility. Stop using your parents as a crutch, even if they are offering their support to you. They've done enough for you.

From your GMAT score and the rest of the stuff you've shared, I think you have an above average intellect and you are hard-working as well. You've tried hard for an MBA. If it hasn't worked out after several years of trying, read the signs. Maybe it isn't the track for you.

The more desperate you get, the more vulnerable you are in getting exploited - by schools, by coaching classes, by unscrupulous consultants.

Maybe you'll be more successful if you change your strategy and stop focussing on the glamour and the hype. Stop chasing a mirage. The world runs on more than just Corporate finance and I-banking. Look at other fields. Marketing, operations, logistics, technology - you'll run out of items to add to the list of options. Most of the millionaires in the country aren't fortunate to have basic education. They still slog and do well in life. So smell the coffee and wake up.

There may be thousands of others out there (and possibly hundreds of Puys as well) who are in a similar situation. I can't influence the others. But if this (semi-emotional) post works as a wake-up call to even one of them, I think it has served its purpose.

Good luck in whatever you may choose to do in life.

I REALLY REALLY want to be a Quant, and thast all i want to be. Its my career dream.

Any responses will eb great help, I'm kinda bummed about this

Thanks much!!!!
Sid

Hi Sid,
Well i may not be very experienced in this quant field as of now 'cause it is only lately that this has got my attention and to be frank i too have got smitten with this, but i can always share with you what i have observed through my research!!
Okay coming to your problem, there i think are two things which you can do, first is to forgo your idea to make it to any top college for MS financial eng, like berkeley, chicago gsb, MIT or a stanford, now why i'm saying this is because i have read the profiles of people studying over there and they have god like profiles especially of berkeley haas. So if you are totally committed to join MS finance / fin eng in 2011 then i think you can look forward to other not so well known colleges, your experience of 4 years will play some role provided you are able to provide valid points. And trust me world is full of opportunities, you might top your MS class get a nice job and then build your career beautifully but for that you really need to work your ass off!!!
Now the second point, if you are totally into MIT, Berkeley and peers, i suggest you to buffer your MS degree and your current BA degree with a nice Indian degreee like MA Economics from Delhi School of Economics, look i'm an engineering student and truthfully i'm unaware of the options available in econ/fin education but as i told you even i'm interested in all these and whatever i'm telling you is through my limited research between my sem break exams and cat prep!! Now this MA from DSE has got quiet a clout in quant field, if you think you can devote time and effort ( money wont be a problem here, nominal fees) i think this will be a major enhancement to your profile. The big question now may be in your mind would be of time, as i can see you are 25, which i think is appropriate for getting the first of the two masters which you might undertook in the next 5 years, seriously Sid you can plunge into this with no compunction of time and all. We only study once, i mean officially we get degrees only once so if your eyes are set for biggies of Finance go for it.
Will try to share a lot of things which might may come on my way, and i'll definitely ask for your guidance too, you can always PM me as and when you need.
And yes if you dream of something you can always get it!!:cheerio:

For the considerate ones who've reached out to me after reading my last post, let me say thank you for your genuine concerns.

That post came from the heart and I had no personal interest in posting it.

I've offered to help out confusedfellaw offline with any concerns or dilemma he's facing. If you are in a similar situation, I'd be happy to help.

I am currently working in a IT company(T**) for the past 10 months.I am in a project in which my profile is of an admin and I am made to stay in office for 14hrs a day and saturdays also I go to office.

I no longer like this job and I am not able to come out of the project also. The only way out seems to be is coming out of the company.

I am not able to prepare anything for the Management Entrance tests and the job profile is also not suited to my interests.

I am totally depressed and not able to come out of this mess.

Any suggestions?

@nv_kkd

it happens dude..IT co. walon ko khooon chusne ki bahut aadat hoti hai...
btw 14hrs a day r u serious ????
first of all...talk with ur superiors or HR about ur hectic schedule and try urself move out of the project...it doesnt help...keep searching other s/w co wherein u can find a job..1 yrs wrkex will def help...

as far ur prep for mgmt tests goes..make it a point to devote more time on sundays..nd sat also if u dont work for 14hrs on sat....for clearing mgmt tests u need more of smart work than hard work....hence smart use of time..
keep taking cat, cet, snap, nmat tests so that u know what comes in exam...if not this year next year or maybe the year after u can make it...

To apply for IIM's part time program PGSEM, am going to take the test meant for part time course. I want to know if applying on IIMB website alone is sufficient for all IIMs or should I apply to individual IIMs. Please clarify.

Am confused because PGSEM part-time course is offered only by IIMB and not by others. That brings the question if application for part-time courses and its respective tests should be made for individual IIMs

1. Try software companies developing banking software as domain specialist.
2. Do CFA and try for equity research jobs analyzing Indian banking sector
3. Try MNC banks like Standard Chartered/ ICICI. A MBA may help here.

I assume that you gave your CAT this year. If thats the case then why worry if CAT gets scrapped? There will be a retest.

Can anyone clarify whether the GD-PI center we opted can be changed for CAT based colleges? Is it college dependent? Or no chance?

HI
(i've already made this post in one of the threads but nobody seems to take note of it )

this is not a sop.but what i think i may present as a reason for wanting to do an MBA....
I want the intelligentsia of PG to point to any ambiguity or vagueness (if present)in my answer

ok here goes..
SIR/MADAM ... it has been my long term desire to work at the helm of an organisation and i earnestly see myself making up the top tier of a company.I like to be faced with challenges, thinking of alternatives and interacting with people, more specifically being introduced to varied perspectives.
to do this,i need to know the basic mechanics of business administration and the functioning of corporates. An MBA will give me an insight into these regions.

its not that i am going to learn this reason by heart and simply vomit it out there ...but the idea is to give u all the basics that underly my perception of MBA

i have tried my best to make the answer as crystal clear as possible...
now if theres any weak link in my sentences plz. let me know .... i want u all to show me the areas that can be targeted.

plz.. help me

hey friends! i am currently in second year engg from mumbai university.i got 85% in X and 78% in XII CBSE.in engg I have 58 % first year aggregate but had 3 ATKTs.I have cleared all of them.can i get into to IIMA if my further academic records are free of ATKTS and above 60% and more? what should i do?should i look for options like GATE for getting into IIT bombay.

:drinking:help me guys i am desperate.will i get my dream college? Will it be tough for me to find a good job?

Greetings!

I have a question, rather i need some guidance from you friends.

My current graduation score stands at 48.9%. Though my previous academic records are better, all above 70% both in X and XII.

Currently I am employed as a Business Development Manager at a firm. I have been employed here for the past 2 years. Now I wish to go for a post graduation in Management and that too from a reputed institute.
The dilemma is owing to my grad score I cannot appear for the mandatory screening tests.

I would like to study further and I would appreciate if someone can guide me with this.

I would like to know what opportunities are there for me here in India, apart from Distance learning.

I look forward to your response.

Best regards,

Viswajit K

hi guys..

would love to know is there any one who pursued MBA after trying a shot at some kinda of business?
m a self employed mechanical engineer (total exp of 5 yrs) and has been running a trading firm for past few years. But now things arent good and hence I am looking for a one year MBA course from a reputed Indian institute...what are my chances of making into? will such kinda experience hamper my chances in fetching a good job after completing course?

Thanks

Nitin

I dropped out of engineering college after 3 years of trying and now I am doing BCA. If I am able to crack the CAT paper, is there any chance if I can clear interview with this kind of background? This can be my last shot. Plz guys help me out here.

What is the scope of CDM consultancy? (It has to do with carbon credits advisory etc.) I'd like to work in that field. Emergent ventures India is a leading CDM consult firm and has come to my campus for recruitment. I think I can get this job if I apply. I don't know any seniors who work in this field, and some advise regarding this would be great.
