Hi
I have done engg from India in Computer science. I have done my engg from GNDU punjab in 2007. During my engg my family got the permanent residency of Canada and after my engg i went to canada( didnt tried for placements and 95% of my class got placed but everybody thought that i am lucky because i am going to canada!! yay right ) .After reaching canada i tried to get jobs in my field but everybody asked for 4-5 years of work-experience and canadian IT is not very big as of US or india. But i was to survive there so i got a job as sales consultant at a retail store selling cellphones and contract, first i liked it becoz something was better than nothing and money was not bad ,i was making 3000 to 4000 dollars per month , it went smooth for about six months.Due to my performance i was transferred to high volume store, then the problem started i started hating that job so much , white people were so racist towards me(ofcousre what can you expect in a retail store:oops:) blah blah ..! my performance has gone down as i have no interest in selling stuff to white people anymore and realised that its a very stupid job even my managar is high school passout.
When i came to canada i wanted to do MBA but as international school ask for 2-3 years of work exp and i had none when i came to canada
so everybody said me to do MSc or Mengg so that i can get a good job but i was interested in business not computer science.
Now i have work exp of almost 2 years in retail sales consultant(of course this exp doesn`t count much )and i wanted to do MBA and i am in dilemma that should i do MBA from canada or come back india and do MBA from there, if i come to india i have to prepare for CAT first and try my luck here. I have to stay in india also and forgot about canada ]
Things about canadian mba is first of all its hard to get into good b-schools without relevant work experience
second thing its very hard to find jobs after doing mba here in canada even from top schools like rotman or schulich and if you dont have good pre-mba work experience then its hardest and its very expensive also to do MBA from canada.
I am very stressed out thinking that where my career is going and i am doing a job which i hate so much that cant even stand single day anymore
and have no career advancement ,if after MBA i end up doing this some job then whats the point of doing this canadian MBA?
I dont want to live here anymore and as i dont like the envirnoment and people here !!
In india if one does MBA from good school atleast one gets a job,i Know its not easy but i have to decide something before its too late.:-(

I know. One of them became a center manager for one of the TIME centers. So he could portray it as proper management experience and get into IIM-K.

Another chap got into IIM-C. But he got amazing CAT scores 99.90+ types. He had even tried previous year and got amazing scores but his graduation results did not come in time and he was evicted out of IIM-C. But he repeated performance and again got into IIM-C the next year. The one year gap he used to teach quant and DI at TIME.

A third chap I know joined IIM-A after teaching for 5 years for IIT coaching at FIITJEE

But I doubt your teaching workex will be given much value. Just that it won't be treated as a gap and you have as much chance as a fresher or slightly better.

I have finished my UG now and i want some time to be prepared to face CAT. Im gonna lay off for an year or so. In that mean time what can i study that would come in handy for me later, you know, like professional courses icwa or any other course. It would be awful waste to do nothing for an year.

By the way i want to add that my ug is B.Sc., zoology. would that be any problem for doing mba? would they take it as a negative in interview ?

I am in the final year of my BE computer science, from BITS Pilani. I have to chose a company for my 6 month internships starting January. I have the option of doing my inter in some tech company, like amazon , yahoo or oracle. I can also take up a hedge fund internship. The hedge fund started its operations in india few months back , and the work will be mostly building excel based valuation models and portfolio analysis tools. Generally companies offer jobs to 6 month interns. I plan to do MBA in the near future. What kind of experience would be more useful?

Hi I am Arindam Sengupta
i am a beginner to PG.
Wanna some help from my seniors...

Actually i completed my BE in 2008 had offers from L&T; Infotech and Syntel but due to recession both the companies have cancelled our joinings.
For the past 1.5 yrs i am working in T.I.M.E. and Career launcher Mumbai as a Verbal Faculty. Now i want to do an MBA....

Will my work experience be counted ??? I am in serious dilemma...pls help me..

Thanks in advance..

@arindam3
many of the mba students work with mba coaching centres as faculty or branch manager..still they get into it..for getting admission into mba the work exp is counted..depends on different exams..cet has some marx for workex...others i dunno..but the point is MANY people work with coaching centres and then do their MBA and get either FIN/MKTg/Ops jobs..
in ur placements of MBA it depends on Company....but mostly all MBA join as managers..workex is not that important..since many people do mba esp for field change from their previous workex...
first think of getting into good MBA school...rest things will follow

@dthree:
my advice would be to goto hedge fund thing...since u want to do an mba...nd since ur compsci from BITS, m sure u can impress the hedge fund and get offer from them...since this option is in lin with ur long term option of MBA(assuming MBA Fin)...if u get offer from hedge fund then no need for MBA :).

as far as ur graduation goes not a problem, many people do BSc still they make it to good bschools....
1. i wont suggest u to go for a break, u can do some work or the other like join some coaching class as faculty or similar other things in which u get plenty of time to prepare side by side for mba....dont concentrate only on CAT..there r lot of good colleges nd different exams for them...For CAT u got to have very high calibre or u shd have given it before....
2. in case u do want break (i still strongly warn u not to go for this option)/ go for ncfm, cfa or frm(cfa nd frm are coslty options) in case u wanna go for mba finance...if u want to opt for mktg i m not competent enuff to ans that....
in general, mgmt institutes want people who can multitask...hence option 1....

Dude definately find a job and try and work...cause it'll be hard to justify what u did for one year - u can't say i spent "1 year studying for cat" so get some good workex

Hi Dude,

I read u'r story and I really think you are under-estimating what you have
1> You have international work ex (worked outside city of citizenship) which is valued heavily by B-schools
2> You have hard core "retail sales exp" i.e. u'e lived in the dirt and experienced a very unique work profile

If you manage to do an MBA-marketing from a good place, i think u'll be the first to get a big job in FMCG-marketing..........buddy just hold on.....don't make decisions out of frustrations.....i think u have a lot to fall back on.......make the most of it.......u can give CAT as, most colleges in India that take GMAT (except SPjain mumbai PGDM and ISB) want 5+ years of exp...........however i don't think writing GMAT and doing a marketing-MBA after 2-3 years is a bad idea either, till then try growing in ur field by gulping down the racism factor---------become the manager.......... if u'r manager is just 12th pass....u r a BE Comp SC and will definately get there.......and then go into MBA-marketing, i bet ppl would give anything for u'r profile. Just remember this job u r doing is not u'r life but it is the way forward.

Thanks & Regards,
- Siddharth

Thanks siddharth. I really appreciate your advice. What do you think about doing marketing in an foreign environment? i know i have really learned a lot of things about selling and marketing and being a part of big corporation( I work for Bell Canada they are biggest telecom company in canada ) that`s how i figured out i want to go for marketing -MBA so "why MBA " can be properly explained by me ;).
Coming to the topic that Indian MBA vs Canadian MBA?
No doubt that canadian MBA is better learning experience but I think that doing marketing job in canada will restrict my future options due my cultural background and I feel i can do very well in indian markets as it is easy for me to understand indian market in future.
Two things 1)give CAT next year and try to get into good B-school in India( this option is very hard because CAT is not easy to crack) then i have to come to india prepare for CAT and give my best shot.

Or work for 2-3 years more and give GMAT at that time ,try to get into MBA through NRI path ?( this is ofcourse hardest :-()

Thanks

Hi sksehdev,

I think both paths are equally challenging and promising.

1) Giving cat next year (total workex , but once u get that percentile u usually make it with a decent interview. But remember no foreign colleges consider cat scores. After passing out, u might end as a Snr Business Executive/ Snr Marketing Executive

2) Giving GMAT after 2-3 yeas (total workex > 5 ) : GMAT exam is a bit different but its not very percentile centric i.e. u can make it to a good place even with 86%ile (680/800) but then the other parts of the application are much harder i.e. essays, Interviews etc are much more work-ex and career goal centric and u typically spend 2-3 months preparing for each college. After passing out, u might end up as a Business Manager/Marketing Manager . Check the thread for Indian colleges accepting GMAT scores.

So i think in both cases the efforts and benefits are equal.

Thanks & Regards,
- Siddharth

Yeah people with true entrepreneurial spirit won't bother about stupid MBA entrance exams.
