Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Hi all,
I am having close to 3 yrs experience as a developer and am going to give CAT this year. I am planning to stay in IT field itself post MBA. I have heard/read that B schools have a hard time in placing ppl having more than 3.5 yrs experience. Is it true for ppl who are interested in joining the same industry post MBA?? Seniors please advice...

You can easily get placed in IT itself as a consultant, etc. Choose your specialisation accordingly.
hello, i m new to pg and i m quite lost actually! i have a doubt regarding the nmims admission nd would really like the experienced people here to help me out....
i) i m a student of b.tech final year with a cgpa of 8.3 till the 3rd year! but in the exam form it says, i m supposed to state the %age equivalent of the cgpa! can anyone help me with that plz! ( i tried searching the net but the ans are confussing! some say JUST MULTIPLY IT WITH 9.5 while some say (GRADE OBTAINED/ TOTAL GRADE) * 100 )!

ii) there is a section in the form which asks us to mention the NATURE OF WORK EXPERIENCE! now i have spent 9months in the industry in three full time paid internships to boost my resume! so should i just mark the option given named OTHERS and then specify that MY WORK EXPERIENCE WAS AS AN INTERN or should i tick NO WORK EXPERIENCE option!

i would really request someone to address my querries plz!

Internship is not work-experience!!

For CGPA to %age conversion, you might have instructions from your University/Institute. If not and you are filling CAT form, then the formula is

(CGPA obtained/Max possible CGPA) * 100

Hi, please answer me. It's very urgent. There's an opening for MBA freshers in an IT MNC for Business development team. The role is management trainee. The career path going forward is head in lead generation, business analyst etc. Does that all come under Pre sales? Please explain to me the role, I am new to IT industry. Thanks.

Yes, the path that you mention is part of Pre-sales only. You may like to visit:-

Hi All,

I am new to PG.
I am in a dilemma. I am currently working in a software firm and have an experience of around 18 months (including final semester on the job training during MCA).
I am a science graduate from Delhi University and a Masters in Computer Applications (MCA) from Thapar University.
I am willing (strongly) to give a shot at premier B-school entrances.
Kindly advice if doing M.B.A. would be a decent option after I have completed my masters in computer applications.
Kindly note that M.C.A. is considered at par with B. Tech.

Please guide.

Thanks,
Saurabh

Just wanted to ask if Paid Internships (where the intern gets paid) of duration 2 months or 1 month done as a part of college curriculum are considered as valid Work Experience?

Work experience is defined as post-qualification work experience. So, internship is not counted as part of work-experience.

Saurabh,

Yes, it would be a good option. But it will depend on what your intention is behind doing MBA? You need to be clear about your objective. Even the justification as vague as increase in salary would do (not during interview but for taking the decision), but you should have clarity in your mind about your goals.

You are eligible. However you will have to submit a certificate latest by June 30, 2012 from the Principal/Registrar of your College (issued on or before June 30, 2012) stating that you have completed all the requirements for obtaining the bachelors degree/equivalent qualification on the date of the issue of the certificate.

adding to what my friend Palak said, internship is sometimes counted as work-experience also. But then most of the time it is post-qualification experience only that is counted as work exp as suggested by palak. So, if you are looking for a job, then ask the respective HR. For academic purpose, only post-qualification experience will be counted.

Puys,

Work-ex is to be taken as after graduation or does not matter whether it is before or after grad?

Diplomat,

Did you read the above post or you were too busy to post your query? Your question had been answered several times on this thread and last time it was answered was just above your post.

Anyway, work-experience is post-qualification work-experience i.e. if you are a graduate then any experience prior to graduation is not counted as work-experience.

hello everyone. this is kiran. i am a 2011 b.com graduate with an aggregate of 88%, i scored 87% in my +2 and 77% in ssc. can say that i am a having a consistent academic record, presently i dint take up any job and i am just working hard to crack this years CAT. but i am worried that because of me sitting idle for abt 10 months(ie june2011 to apr 2012 till i get a call and convert it) i am neither considered as fresher nor an experienced guy. so will i get a reject in gd/pi though i perform well? will this be an elimination factor?

Thanks Palak.
Increase in salary is definately one of the objectives.
What worries me a bit is the fact that a very few for for MBA after their masters degree.
Usually I find people directly out of college joining colleges for MBA.

You will still be considered a fresher. And if you score good in CAT and perform well in GD/PI, then you should have no worries.

There are many people who go for MBA even after MCA though I have seen many people also opting for M Tech after MCA and then PhD. It will depend on your interest. Most of the people who go for Masters in a subject have deep interest in the subject so they do not want to opt for anything else and grow in the same field. But there are exceptions as well.

Provided the panel is satisfied by your justification of 10 month-drop/leave for CAT preparation.

Thanks for shedding light on this one Palak. I was looking for similar answers. I have just finished my tenure with Accenture (19 months) and since I think it's a good idea to start working only post-CAT (i'm serious about it), I was wondering if an internship is a good idea to fill that gap of 3 months between now and CAT.

Therefore, now that I know the post-internship certificate will be that of an 'internship' and not as a full-time employee, knowing that it's a 'non-graduation' internship, would I be able to list it as work-experience at b-schools (mostly at GDPI stage if all goes right, since the CAT forms would ask for pre-August experience only)

Pardon me if I asked a question that's been asked before. Couldn't read the 101 pages.

Thanks a ton.

The question whether the colleges/institutes will count internship as work-experience or not, will be answered by the college/institute itself. Only go for internship when it is going to add value to your resume. Otherwise, it is better not to take risk and go for internship. By the way where are you going for internship?

I have a joining date of mid august 2011 where I start off as a fresher. The CAT form asks for the number of months of work ex til 31 aug 2011 if I have read the guidelines crrctly. So what would be my work ex in such a case?

And secondly, IIM-A jus changed its AR formula and i reduced from 21 to 18(xcluding wrk ex), how adversely would it affect my chances?
