Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

I wonder why my post was groaned at, I guess I am not qualified enough to be with you guys here. I spent a lot of time making that post in hopes that you guys will help motivate me and encourage me but seems like only qualified people command respect here. Thanks for the help anyways friends. I guess I will delete my profile here. 😞

Since it is good to have work experience to get through MBA colleges, I am curious to know what all counts as Work Experience while giving CAT? For instance if I work under my dad for a year, does that count? And how much work experience is considered good, is 1 year work experience sufficient?

...I still aspire to become an MBA. Now, I know many of you would probably advise me against joining an MBA course. As far as I understand, you must have an aptitude for what you aspire to do, and I think in the case of MBA I do have it. So please kindly do not discourage me, I really want to do this. And believe me, I have not made this decision based on emotions, yes I want to finally prove to my parents and people around me that I am worth something but thats not why I chose MBA. Its a calculated decision. Of all the things I can do with my career at this point, MBA makes the most sense.

Since you aspire to be an MBA, I trust you would be willing to slog and make the most of your prep time.. There's nothing stopping you from becoming an MBA, yes your acads will play a bit of spoilsport, but that fact shud not deter you from preparing for CAT, MAT and other exams that you are eligible for...

1. If I start my preparation from today, given my weak academic background, what do you think a realistic goal for me regarding entrance exams should be? I can obviously forget about top 15 colleges but I still would want to get into a decent college. Do I have a chance at something like Symboisis or any decent college for that matter?

-- No u shudnt... IIMs dont require any separate application, so do your best and see if u get a call... unlikely still..
-- MDI u might stand a chance, see the student profiles on their website, talk to some senior to assess your chances... Same applies for NMIMS (talk to some senior b4 appplying for NMAT)..
-- SIBM i think would be tough, but enquire abt SCMHRD, SIOM, SIIB, SCIT and others based on where your interest lies...

Best way abt gng abt any of this is to identify this year's admission threads for all of these institutes and then either post on that or PM any senior active on that thread...

2. Eligibility criteria for giving CAT is 50% in graduation. But my final year results won;t be out by the time CAT is conducted. Can I still give the CAT?

Yes you can

3. MAT are conducted 4 times an year and they do not have any eligibility criteria wrt to minimum percentage. Can I sit in all 4 exams? How does MAT work? And when does the session for MAT colleges start?

Visit:

and hang arnd on this thread:
http://www.pagalguy.com/discussions/mat-sep-2011-queries-and-discussions-25068303

4. Although my job was not a high profile one but it still gave me ample exposure. It was a front end job, I sold cars. The job gave me immense confidence and I learned a lot from it. I would probably want to make my career in Sales and marketing. Will my one year experience count for something in getting into colleges? I do not have an experience or appointment letter because I was not provided one. But I do have visiting cards, PF slips, etc. Colleges would accept these, won't they?

Most probably yes, but you should have had an appointment letter.. if you dont i would advise you to approach HR and get a letter on company letterhead stating that you worked for so and so profile for the mentioned duration.. PF slips while being a proof of employment are not a proof of the profile you worked in...

5. When does the MBA session start at most colleges? I am assuming around May-June which gives me almost an year from now. Should I look for a new job during this time to improve my CV? Or are there colleges which start there session sooner?

Typically arnd mid June, some are even delayed to August.. abt job is your choice and something for you to balance out with your prep.

6. How to/Where to get started with MBA Preparation?

Get hold of some prep material, join a test series (coaching if you feel the need).. most of the test series have just started.. choose between TIME/IMS/CL...

7. Which other exams besides CAT and MAT do you guys recommend for me?

SNAP, NMAT (after talking to some seniors in the instis u are interested in), State-level CET exams...

Hi...welcome to PG.:
Everyone is respected here and puys always try to help ppl lin doubt.
Since u r new so I suggest that u ask to the point question and state ur overall profile while doing so. In other words be precise...Doing so will help u as more puys will read and asnwer.Ur query was so long that by the time a puy finishes reading he forgets wat was written in opening paragraf. If u hv too many questions, then u can ask them one by one rather than askin them at one go.
So no need to delete ur profile...and BTW I hv removed ma groan.
hi PUYS
my brief acad. bkgrnd is
ssc-73%-2002
hsc-62%-2004
grad-65%-2010
i m planing to giv cat 11.my doubt is will the gaps between my hsc & grad & further grad & mba will hamper my chances of selection at a good b school.PLZ RPLY. REALLLY CONCERNED

The gap between hsc and grad will hurt you so better you accept it.. but if you are sure an MBA is what you want to do, then it is not something that will serve as a deterrent, atleast its not something that makes u ineligible or result in outright rejection..
You would face some questions on the same during your bskool admission interviews and how u handle those will shape your chances of securing an admission..
Even during your placements, you might miss out on some companies bcos of this, but still many other companies will be there...

Put your best effort in your prep as of now, ad ATB.

thanx man...!!

i guess i'll go with google then....shud i?

Since profile isnt a bummer, and brand name is what you are interested in, then it should be Google !!

Working under Dad counts as long as you were working for a salary and can produce a salary slip..

If thats not the case then u can ask your father to get u a letter issued on company letter head stating your time of employment. Some bskools will accept this as a proof of work-ex.

Based on what I can tell, it is preferable to join a bskool with an experience of abt 18-24 months, or less than 1 yr... 18-24 months typically the criteria for lateral eligiblity (varies across bskools, but normally in this range)
3 yrs plus experience is good if you wish to continue in the field u were employed earlier, but in a managerial role.. or u wish to go towards domain-specific consulting..

seeing the graduation cut-offs in many of the top institutes this year is a matter of concern for me. Following are my scores
10th= 70%
12th= 85%
and BE 2010 = a crappy 59%
So its obvious BE is crapped up.
Im currently working in one of the top automotive electronics company in the field of embedded technology in Pune and will be completing a year in it this september.
And also preparing for CAT-2011.
Assuming that all goes well in the test, what are my chances of getting in any one of the top 20 institutes (concerned only by my BE aggrgte)??

Decent provided u ace CAT :)
U can count out some IIMs like A, B, L, S... still a chance with C provided their criteria doesnt change drastically and u can handle the queries in your PI...
MDI also u are in with a chance..
NITIE ruled out, unless your a category candidate..
SIBM, NMIMS u can find out by talking to one of the seniors (by visiting this yr's admissions thread, For SIBM u can send a private message to shouryasen, for NM PM either sriharsha711 or deep_agrawal)...
XLRI u still stand a chance, as preference on acads isnt too high, ppl with scores lower than yours have made it to XL..
anyother bskool u wanna knw abt?

im kinda keen on joining MICA (advertising n marketing), how abt it?

Do u mean PGDM (Communications), the full-time course??
For PGDM (C), the eligibility is 50% in grads.. and 2 step process..
MICAT followed by GE-PI , GE is group exercise..

Gladly...
Eligibility:
First class engineering/technology graduates are eligible to apply ( 5% relaxation for SC/ST/PD Candidates)

Process:
1. Appear for CAT 2011.
2. Apply online to NITIE, notification for same normally comes in the month of September.

Admissions at NITIE can be categorised into a 2-step process:
Shortlisting for GDPI:
Normally shortlisting for GD-PI is done on the basis of your CAT %ile, with the cutoff for last yr being arnd 98.2-98.4 for last 3 years

GD-PI & Final Converts post GDPI:
For candidates shortlisted based on their performance in CAT, GD-PI are held. GDPI is the process where the profile comes into picture, a quality work-ex adds to your profile, so understandably all top-bschools have a good proportion of ppl with work-ex.
But this does not mean freshers are at a disadvantage. Its in your hands to convince the panelists abt why you belong in NITIE, how convinced are you abt your ambitions.
For a final convert, maximum emphasis is given to your GDPI performance, and negligible to your CAT score, so every1 who gets a GDPI call, stands at an almost level platform.

I had similar profile as yours with a 59.5 in B.Com(Hons.) and I was able to make it to NMIMS and SIBM.

Puys,
How much importance is given to ncfm certificates in reputed b schools? Does it in any way add to one's marks for selection?? Do i stand a fair chance of selection even without these certificates??

NCFM certificates don't matter to B schools.Don't worry about them!!

I think you can chose either way..as both would help in long run 😃 mostly i have not felt that great a need for CA to go for MBA.. but nevertheless u can take a call.. but don't leave ur CA in between..finish it off would be my suggestion..of after CA u gain exp in finance..it would be a good value addition

thanks a lot vivek and apaar

Hey !!!

I year back I was in the same situation .....
I just got a job at right time ..... and working now.

Answer: It all depends on you !!! If you think that you can wait... and keep fighting in the job market ... be confident and try your best. :-P

Else, go for MBA !!! For sure you will get a fine job after 2 years with MBA in UBS. Its a nice college.

Do consider your acads also in every situation.
