Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

I have a small issue and i'm asking the question because i still cant understand what in actual terms is the kind of exp that is valid, i was preparing for CAT 2010 so i had joined a small company as the work load would be comparatively less but i wasnt able to fair as well as i wanted n had not applied instutions apart frm the top ones, with almost 10 months of work-ex i left the job and have only the work-ex certificate and have joined a banking course in ifbi which takes up my tym and isnt possible to purse a job with it i have decided to go ahead and give the papers again this year...will my 10 months of work-ex wil be taken into account??
P.S was workin in the accounts division as I'm a commerce grad..

In what terms u want to ask this? Yes it is a valid experience. But if u r asking whether after MBA firms would count this. i am not sure as 0-12 months experience are taken as freshers only though company would give you preference and also it would add value to your CV

thanx and just another query i want to ask in terms of well like after CAT 2011 assuming i clear a few cut offs and during interviews will this be considered valid experience and as for the not being in a job for the next six months i have a perfectly valid reason which is that 4-5 hour course during the day as it is complete classroom training

There is no hard and fast rule that says an MBA after a work experience is good.
Generally organizations prefer students with work experience because the time required to make them productive is cut down considerably. That by no means indicate that freshers are left behind ...

Why is that you cannot study after MBA? Many take up job work there for a considerable duration and then pursue their MBA.

1.You can surely take up internship during your MBA ,infact you have to complete your summer internship.

2.What course? Are you talking about certification ?If yes the you surely can take up certifications which are on techno management lines.

3.I am unable to comprehend this point. Why will you choose a profile after MBA which does not map to your skillsets? It is not that freshers do not get good offers after MBA..

Start preparing and get into a good MBA college.

Hi Guys,

First of all I would like to congratulate you all for making this site what it is today. A great source for any MBA aspirant with a truckload of information. As you can make out by my post count, I am new here. Yes, another one of those MBA aspirants and I am here to be a part of this wonderful community and in the process gain as much information and knowledge as I can.

I have a few doubts which I would like to address here and would appreciate any help on these matters. Now to begin with, I am probably the worst MBA aspirant you would have encountered. My profile is so bad, that I wonder if even a noname college would be interested in me. Let me give you a little background of my academics :

Now, I think of myself as a bright guy with a fairly decent IQ but I never was that interested in academics. Never could get around to mug up the answers and secure good marks in examinations. I secured an average 61% in my 10th class CBSE Boards, but failed in my 12th CBSE board exams. I went to another state and gave my 12th exams from a state board and secured 53%. I belong to a science background and like any other immature kid, I choose engineering as my career option when clearly I did not have an aptitude for it. As expected, I wasn't able to cope up with it and ad to leave it mid way. I wasted 2 years on it. Next, I joined a regular grad course in a degree college but due to some unforeseen circumstances, I wasn't able to complete that as well. Another year down the drain. Finally got some sense into me and got my life back on track. I joined a 2 year diploma course in Retail Management and joined 3 year B.A programme degree from correspondence at School of Open learning, DU. After completing my 2 year diploma, I got placed in an Automobile company as a sales executive. I worked there for an year before quitting recently to prepare myself for MBA entrance exams. I also gave my final year BA exams this month the result of which is expected around December.

Now, as you can make out from my brief background history, academics isn't one of my strong points. But I still aspire to become an MBA. Now, I know many of you would probably advise me against joining an MBA course but my questions to you guys are : Is MBA only meant for bright students with great academics? Who says that an average student like me cannot become an MBA. As far as I understand, you must have an aptitude for what you aspire to do, and I think in the case of MBA I do have it. So please kindly do not discourage me, I really want to do this. And believe me, I have not made this decision based on emotions, yes I want to finally prove to my parents and people around me that I am worth something but thats not why I chose MBA. Its a calculated decision. Of all the things I can do with my career at this point, MBA makes the most sense.

You guys can probably sense some desperation in this post but this is because of the fact that this is my first and final chance at this. I am not getting any younger and I have already lost 4 years of education. People my age are already an MBA and are working , so you must understand how important the time is for me this time.

Now, on to my doubts :
1. If I start my preparation from today, given my weak academic background, what do you think a realistic goal for me regarding entrance exams should be? I can obviously forget about top 15 colleges but I still would want to get into a decent college. Do I have a chance at something like Symboisis or any decent college for that matter?

2. Eligibility criteria for giving CAT is 50% in graduation. But my final year results won;t be out by the time CAT is conducted. Can I still give the CAT?

3. MAT are conducted 4 times an year and they do not have any eligibility criteria wrt to minimum percentage. Can I sit in all 4 exams? How does MAT work? And when does the session for MAT colleges start?

4. Although my job was not a high profile one but it still gave me ample exposure. It was a front end job, I sold cars. The job gave me immense confidence and I learned a lot from it. I would probably want to make my career in Sales and marketing. Will my one year experience count for something in getting into colleges? I do not have an experience or appointment letter because I was not provided one. But I do have visiting cards, PF slips, etc. Colleges would accept these, won't they?

5. When does the MBA session start at most colleges? I am assuming around May-June which gives me almost an year from now. Should I look for a new job during this time to improve my CV? Or are there colleges which start there session sooner?

6. How to/Where to get started with MBA Preparation?

7.
Which other exams besides CAT and MAT do you guys recommend for me?

Thats it for now. I have many more doubts, but I would come to them with time. Once again I want to thank you guys for reading through this lengthy post and I thank you in advance for any help/advice/suggestions that you may provide.

Regards,

Depends on profile. If you are getting technical profile in Deloitte, I believe you should go for Google. Rest is upto you. All the best

hi PUYS
my brief acad. bkgrnd is
ssc-73%-2002
hsc-62%-2004
grad-65%-2010
i m planing to giv cat 11.my doubt is will the gaps between my hsc & grad & further grad & mba will hamper my chances of selection at a good b school.PLZ RPLY. REALLLY CONCERNED

Since it is good to have work experience to get through MBA colleges, I am curious to know what all counts as Work Experience while giving CAT? For instance if I work under my dad for a year, does that count? And how much work experience is considered good, is 1 year work experience sufficient?

Hello everyone,

I am in a big dilemma. To give u a brief background about me, I have completed my Secondary and Post Secondary Education (B.Eng. In Environmental Engineering) from Ottawa, Canada. Currently, living here and I am unemployed.

I have a 3-month summer work experience in a regulatory agency, and 8 months contract work experience in the construction industry where I administered the company's environmental protection program. My boss at construction company had promised me to give me a permanent job if everything goes well during the contract period. After the period was over, he said that eventhough I did a great job, the workload in the company had decreased so he felt I should look for jobs in consulting firms. This was in December.....:drinking:I was depressed and so took a 2 month vacation to visit my parents in China.

After returning from vacation in end January, I fugured all I have to do now is apply for jobs and surely with some decent work experience, I should be getting calls from companies for interviews etc.

I got 2 interviews. First in March 2011, which went well and the managers who interviewed seemed to be happy. I would follow up every week with one of the manager's and he would say I have a very good chance of getting the job and that he felt I was very motivated and was very happy with my responses to their questions blah blah but alas! I didn't get it. I was rejected in May. It took 2 damn months to make a hiring decision.....:banghead:. I should have continued to search for jobs but I got complacent and slacked off. I am still in contact with the company incase something opens up.

The next interview I had in May 2011 with a big firm and I think it went fine, but not as good as the first one. I am still awaiting their decision, but they keep delaying it, so I am not very hopeful.

Since May 2011, I have been contacting employers/project managers at various companies and sending out resumes etc. but have hardly received any replies. Whenever I call them, they flat out say that they aren't hiring. . I am very very depressed, dejected and sad. I cry a lot nowadays whenever I am alone. I am 22 yrs old and I am very confused as to what to do.

My original plan was to gain 10+ yrs experience in my field of studies. After that, I would have pursued MBA in one of the top schools in USA, and then return to India and set-up a consulting firm that focused on environmental remediation and sustainability. However, now my original plan seems to be evaporating into thin air...

My dad wants me to settle down and take care of my younger brother because he is going to retire soon and there is no one in the family (Mom, dad, younger bro -currently studying in Bhopal, and myself) earning aside from him. After graduation too I had difficulties in finding a job for 4 months, but got that contract position. However, my dad had suggested to return India and prepare for Civil Services just in case. Since then, I developed interest in Civil Services and would daily listen to debates on IBNLive on my internet, keep myself updated on worldwide events and issues. But as u know I stopped doing that....now for the past 3 months I have been again reading current affairs daily on websites because Ciivil Services is on my mind. I dream that what if!!! i become an IAS officer.....my parents would be proud and I will laugh at all the troubles I am having in Canada.

However, I am not sure if I want to return to India because I am so acclimated to Canada and have good friends here. I am not sure if I will be able to adjust in a new environment like India especially when my parents are not living there. My relatives are are very unhelpful and have always given us trouble.

I am very confused.....not sure what to do. 😞 I am having sleepless nights. I am worried that i am wasting my time in Canada by not doing anything. Anyone who has gone through similar experience, please tell me what to do. Any help/suggestions/guidance/thoughts would be highly appreciated.

Thanks
