Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Puys I am a class of 2011 graduate in Electronics. I've a job offer from HCL and Wipro. Kaun sa badhiya hai? Also I've a job offer as a content writer in some website.

Now I had planned to prepare for CAT and other exams as well till December and then take a job. But this Wipro joining date is on 13th June this month. Now I am all confused. I am sure I would not like to optimize between job and studies.

One option is to take job and prepare for CAT concurrently.

Another is to sit home, prepare for CAT and take Dec CFA. Will it be feasible?

Although I've made up my mind but still.... Some suggestions please!

Puys,
I'm IT pro with around 5 yrs wkex...but m background is electrical engg...can any1 tell me if i'm eligible to pursue MS in US in comp sc and maths?

Seems like u r trying to row many boats at the same time ;)

how u intend to create balance between CAT prep and CFA?

It would be advisable to take job n prepare for CAT..remember one thing getting good percentile is part of the story. u will weaken ur case in PI by dropping..

Also in my opinion job in HCL/wipro is better than content writing for a website

Since you have already made up your mind, well..

Anyway, here goes my opinion:

HCL is better than Wipro. The vast majority of Wipro-ites I know of do not have a good impression about their organization. On the other hand, HCL folks have a balanced view. I have friends in both the organizations in Bangalore.

If you are aiming for the top 15 B-schools alone, I'd say joining a job and concurrently preparing for the exam would be the best bet as there is a huge risk factor involved otherwise.

Sitting at home and preparing for CFA is not an uphill task at all (I have the books). You just have to start the studies asap. Also, be prepared to give your future interview panel a convincing reason as to why you studied something too specialized in the field of finance before joining MBA.

Guys need some advice. Just graduated from college and have my joining after December. So i am free till then. I was planning to work in some NGOs. So do NGOs give minimal paid internships to students. And how tough is the selection process in the NGOs which come under the UN. Any advice?

And is there some other work that i can do for 6 mnts that will help my profile because i am planning to do an MBA in the future.

i have a decent profile till now except that i dropped 2 yrs to study for IITJEE and when i got in, i managed to get pretty horrible grades ๐Ÿ˜ž

Hi puys,
i have completed my B.E. in EC this year..currently m awaiting my result.i am placed in Mphasis ๐Ÿ˜ i had given CAT last year..got 98.51..converted IMT-G.bt did not join as my dream is of getting into IIMs.so wud b giving CAT this year.

The problem is that i got my joining date of November which is very late.By the time i would be filling up the forms, i would have zero work-ex which may impede my chances of getting into good college.

Should i take up a temporary low-level job for the next five months or should i just wait till my joining while concurrently preparing for CAT?
pls advise

I think u hv this good opportunity with u..and it is a blessing in disguise.

Also who gave u this idea that zero work-ex would impede ur chances for getting into good college. There is no hard and fast rule as such. So relax , infact for some specific profiles freshers are now preferred in India unlike abroad. So use this time to crack CAT ๐Ÿ˜ƒ ATB

In any case workex below 1 year is not counted as such. So it will only affect if you wait for 1 more year and then seriously give CAT. If you want to clear it this year only, then it wont matter. Still getting a job which gives you little workex+salary wont hurt. All the best
BTW I hear Mphasis has a 2 year bond period. Keep that in mind before joining.

Hi all ,
my name is taran & m from Delhi . I done my graduation from GJU university (Hisar) with 55%. now m planning to do mba but the problem is from where ? I got offer letter from UWIC (UK) but m really confused where to go .(uwic ranking in Uk - 71)

As i want to settle in India only. & am not too genius to crack CAT or enter in any good univ. lik IIM,fort etc, therefore leave me with private B schools - ****, amity or any other if you know ?

Talking abt UK , they ll not give PSW visa after course but only if u ll get job with good money which is tough & i have to come back after mba.

From ur pt of view from whr one should do mba in his situation, UWIC(UK) or ****, others in India to make good career ? And if i come back to india after doing mba from uk without any work exp, will i get job easily in India or is it hard ? In india, emplpyers/mnc give preference to Indian degree or foriegn degree ?

Plz reply asap .thnks .tc

thanks diablorulez and tejas sharma for the advice :D..
@tejas- AFA the bond thing is concerned, theres no mention of it in the offer letter that dey have mailed to me..they have cut down on ctc by some amount per year..neways thanks a lot

Could someone advise me on the career options in the social/development sector post an MBA? Currently I am working as a mechanical engineer in an oil refinery in Cochin (3 years work ex). I have been working part-time in an NGO and feel that is the kind of work which I should be doing full-time. I am looking at pursuing a career in the social/development sector. What are my options? Which colleges should I look for admission? Is MBA even the right course to look at?

Could someone help me with this? Or am I asking this question in the wrong place? *confused*

yep these is a 2yr bond worth 1 lakh in mphasis. and if u complete 2 yrs they giv 50k, so that makes it 1.5 lkh bnd.

Actually we tend to not reply to any question unless we are sure about it.hence u might not be getting the response. I have limited knowledge about it. afaik pursuing a career in social development can happen anytime as per your choice. Though MBA would aid in helping them in their Public relations field, or their fund management,u can also work on the operations side and utilize ur learnings to streamline their work ..doing proper cost benefit analysis..and also utilize project management learnings..so infact work in social development would be quite entrepreneurial in nature and wld keep u always on toes .. check this post

Morover..colleges which have quite some inclination towards this would b

  1. TISS
  2. IRMA
  3. IIT Roorkee (my relative did MBA from there and they support such aspirations )

P.S:- others can add to it..This is as per what I understand and know

Are service bonds only prevalent in IT companies or even companies in other sectors have them....I am talking about post MBA placements......

Puys,
I've heard that extra curricular activities play an imp role in the selection process at reputed b schools.. Now do they prefer students who have done a number of certificate courses or it can be any activity in which the student is interested??

Actually some colleges(IIM A,B, SPJAIN etc) look at the overall profile of the student before giving a call. So in that case, good extra currics is a prerequisite. In most other colleges if you have many extra curricular activities, it will help in your CV. If they are interested in what you write in your CV, they will definitely ask you questions and if you are able to convince, it will help you in you getting good marks in PI round and ultimately help you in selection. And yes people with good co-currics/extra currics have a definite edge in selection in all B-schools.

i wud recomend a job change...coz wid 85%ile u wont get a b-school which wll fetch u the money ur earning now...and plus opertunity cost and high MBA fees are against u....

so change job...get a good hike.....n if still interested in MBA...try forign universities...prepare for GMAT...
