Wait and compelte your one year otherwise it will go waste generally in companies and college exp are taken as bands..

i.e. 0-11 months : equivalent to fresher
1yr -1 yr 11 months : equivalent to 1 yr

thats how it is taken.. so wld suggest still to it for some time n complete an year and then decide

Your profile is very good and based on ur acads if u score good in CAT u have good chances of getting all the calls.. SO for you its only CAT which is the delimiting factor..

As you mentioned ur verbal is good then use this section to maximize ur over all score and rest two just to clear cut off

generally to get IIM calls you shd have more than 90%ile in each section and overall above 99%ile

Hi All,

I am seeking for some career guidance here.

My Background:
Electronics and Telecomm Engineer from Mumbai University.
Working as Risk analyst in Credit card risk managment.(2 years)
Planning to appear for FRM , nov2011

I applied for MFE progs to US but could not get through. And due to some personal constraint I cant apply next year. Now I have to be in India only.

I am looking forward career in Mathematical Finance. I wish to deal with Maths and Programming more than finance itself. I want to be at technical side(Quant/Modeller/Developer). Can you please guide me varius options available?

I want to work here itself(India). So please let me know what are options available to progress towords career path outlined above.

I researched and got the following options:
1.CQF: Costly, not sure how much it is recognised in India.
2.Actuaries:Big time investment(I can do that without issue) ,not sure if it can help me to land in IB,derivatives, hedge funds.(not inclined to work for Life insurance, employee benifit sector)

the thing is the question for me is if not MFE then wht?
What can get closer to it being in India?

Thanks

hi
i am fresh graduate from NIT.i wish to take CAT this year.however i am placed at a company which has a 2 year bond.therefore i am in a dilemma whether to join it or go for CAT coaching exclusively.
as far i see it,joining the company would give me some experience but i feel that i would loose my ambition to pursue higher studies.
on the other hand i feel that if i would go for an exclusive CAT coaching i can brush up on my fundas plus (maybe) i could get a higher percentile and get into one of the IIMs.
could anyone please give me an opinion on this?i would really appreciate it.
thank u

I was also in similar situation one year back. But I was fresh from college and had converted a call. But it was not an IIM or a college equal to IIM. So I thought I will go and work as I was placed at that time. Now I work at office for 10 to 12 hours a day but still try my best to prepare for CAT atleast 2hrs a day. If you believe in yourself that you can crack CAT even after working, then go and get a taste of the corporate life. Parallelly prepare for CAT. If you get top colleges then break the bond and go for MBA. Anyways in my view, giving away the job and repeating for CAT is not a good option. You will have a void in your profile which will not be very easy to explain during MBA interview even if you convert CAT with 100%ile..... It is you call..... Take the decision you think is right for you and stick to it..... Never turn back 😉

Cheers!!

thanks a lot for creating such a thread..
i'll try to present my problem in shortest possible form.
the thing is tht i'm placed with L&T; for past 10.5 months, the job no longer excites me so i want to resign n start preparing for cat! problem is that while working i cant get more than 2 to 3 hrs a day to study n i cant resign for atleast 1.5 months more.
is there any experienced puy who can tel me whether it is possible to crack cat WHILE WORKING..AND STUDYING JUS 2hrs A DAY. if there is anyone who has achieved "the goal" under d above mentioned circumstances? if there is..then plz do guide me!! if there is not..then also kindly help me to find out the way!
thnx again!

Yaar it all depends on your aptitude. If you feel that you can crack it with the level of skill you have, you can continue with your job and study 1-2 hrs a day average. I was working for Infy when I started preparing and I studied on an average 1.5-2 hrs a day after my job. And took 1.5 months leave before CAT.
Just give 1-2 apti exams, check your skill level, your level of preparation. In any case you cannot leave the company for 1.5 more months so continue with your studies and give as many exams as you can so that you know where you stand. If it is not satisfactory, you will need 3-4-5 hours everyday.
BTW most of the people who clear IIMs do there prep with job.

To further add.. I was working worth L&T; when I cracked CAT. As Tejas very well mentioned just before CAT u can take a long leave..

but while working work diligently and u have to b very disciplined.. I also used to work around 12 hrs a day and it takes lot of motivation but its not impossible to still stretch and study for 2-3 hrs a day..on weekends u can spend more time say around 6-8 hrs.. so it balances out

Every day u can take up quant or verbal or DI..just keep in mind it is healthy to rotate subjects as it helps u check boredom and also u gradually cover all the three verticals.. on weekend u can plan to take a mock..or do sectionals..along with ur regular routine

Details of how I prepared..u can find here..
http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/cat-and-related-discussion/27446-cat-2008-for-working-professionals-96.html#post1096323

but honestly everyone has different style of preparing..so see what suits u and stick to it

@All :- It is seriously advisable not to drop and prepare. you can very well manage CAT while working.

2.) a person working in his family business or his own entrepreneurship venture

also i want to know if these are counted as work-ex what proof is required for the same??

Full time payroll is counted as work ex. Hence your option 1 will not be counted as work ex..but second one will ..as managing a company u r on the payroll of ur firm..

for this u need to show on company letterhead ur appointment with designation u r handling in ur firm with date.. also if u have a salary and pay structure for urself u can mention that..alternatively u can also very well get the work experience certificate on ur company letter head. this is as per my knowledge. anyone can correct me if m wrong 😛

hello...m in graphic era ddun..in our colg accenture HSFP training prog will b conducted from d comin week...but training in HP noida is also one option..plz tell me for which one i shud go...is HSFP training prog will b of any use in its placement ??? is it of any use??? plz reply as soon as possible... 😃

Guys I am also in the same boat like others who have converted IIM Ka and are unable to decide .
My profile
X :81
XII : 74.2
B.tech(2010) 69.52 Mech engg.
CAT OA :99.52
Work ex : HZL(5).. currently in BHEL ( 4 months)
I am in a huge dilemma whether to join IIM Ka and resign from BHEL or not .one option is to prepare fro next season but there is no guarantee of getting calls even after good percentile as my acads are average else join IIM Ka this year ... but i have some apprehensions about te infra faculty placements .. would request fellow puys and IIM alumni to share their opinions and some parameters to take this decision.

Many factors come into play here. If you think you can crack next year as well, then you should go for next year as by that time your wokrex will also improve and you'll be eligible for IIM-L. A lil improvement in your score means IIM-C and Ra calls.
Anyways you should check IIM-Shillong,IIM-I etc's first batch's placement reports and decide if you want the kind of profiles and salaries offered to first batch. One more factor is that 6 new IIMs will be competing with each other for placements so even that also affects
Again due to unexpected nature of CAT, maybe next year becomes difficult or more people give CAT or CAT goes international etc so you never know what will happen. An IIM call in hand is always better than another CAT next year. Even I would have joined Kashipur if I would not have MDI call.+ the acads issue is really creating problems for late bloomers like you(and me). So any decision made should keep these points in perspective. All the best and choose well.
