Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Hi.. I have done my engineering from University of Pune. In our university, only our BE marks are written on our degree certificate. My 8 semester avg is 56.5% while my B.E % is 67.3%. On my degree certificate, it is written that I have passed my engineering with 'Distinction'(which is above 66% for pune univ.). So while applying to MBAS colleges(in particular FMS which needs 60% in engineering), Which marks do I use? (PS : I have a letter from college saying that ' I have passed my engineering with 67.3 %')
I have another query. I got 97%ile in 2010. I am planning to prepare this time and give it again. Got 98 in first CL mock. I am bad at quant as I have not touched it in 2-3 years. But i'm plannign to improve in it :). My question is.. Is my profile good enough for Top 10 MBA colleges?
My Profile:

10th CBSE (2004) 91.2%
12TH CBSE (2006) 71.8% (The true reason is that I became a bit of a rebel and did not atudy at all.)
BE Pune univ. 2010 : 67.3% ( Pretty good for pune university. I came 5th in my class in BE)P.S.-This is not the aggregate.
Work Ex- 3 months with a startup as a Business development executive. Worked and fought for govt. tenders and stuff.
3 months(currently working) in Ericsson as a Project management engineer.
Extra Curr. - Part of the college district level champions team (twice).
Won AFMC national level inter college talent show + a no. of other talent shows.
A singer and a guitarist. Write my own music. Part of 3 rock bands till now(one of which won univ. rock comp.).

Will my 12th screwup hurt me bad?
Please do reply puys!! :)

for fms use 67.3%, that which is written on your degree certificate if it is written explicitly.
Don 't use your sem avg.Know few puys who had reduced their sem marks becuase they thought it to be so.End result they lost few colleges due to their own fault.
And your 12 scores won't hurt,Except few colleges.
just get a decent score.Thats all

Guys need your help with my frustrating life. Heres my story,

10(cbse) 78.8
12(cbse) 82.2
2 yrs gap then cleared iit-jee and got into an iit.
Screwed up brutally there and became a 5 pointer.
But fortunately got placed in 2 companies, the best option being it company(software engg) with a ctc of 6 lpa which there are only offering to iit grads.
now another twist came, got a backlog in my 7th semester. the hr told that i need to clear all my papers before joining, so have no idea whether they are going to kick me out or postphone my joining.

got 94 percentile on my first attempt in cat2010 with 99.4 in verbal.
decent extra curriculars. a little above avg.
So what should i do now?well the options i think i have are

1. work in an NGO for 6 months and put all hopes into cracking cat 2011. But still this leaves a gap of 4-5 monts as intership in reputed NGOs last only arnd 5-6 mnts.if the cmpny takes me back after i clear my papers all will be well but there is so much uncertainty.

2.Go to the other job i got, but it is only 3 lpa and has a bond of 2 lakh for 2 yrs!!! Its heavy machine service something so im guessing they are going to make me work like a dog. also my colleagues there will be frm ordinary clgs, so the IIT tag goes down the drain if i join. and is very shameful. and further more have to play 2 lakhs coz im sure i will quit before 2 yrs.

3. Try for some a business/ market analyst jobs in some consulting firms. Will big MNCs hire me even though i have a poor gpa??? i do have some chance of getting in some indian consulting companies hopefully, but still uncertain. and have no clue abt this line. self learning.

what should i do??? any advice????

Dear Seniors,

I am a Mechanical Engineer, 2007 batch, with lot of ups and downs in my career.
I am preparing for CAT 2011 and got 96%le in first CL mock.

I joined infosys after college. During college started working for own Telemarketing company. I had registered a company, website was ready but could not even launch it. I had no funds and support for marketing. After 2 years of experience i quited my job and started Business in New Delhi. Not satisfactory. After one year of business again i came to Job in Tata Motors.

My problem is how to represent my company and business failures.
Please help me.

Regards
Gaurav

With the kind of experience you have, I believe you have a better chance of converting your call. Just show them that you have learnt from your failures and the reason for doing MBA is to bounce back from your failure and try again. I think starting your own venture is a differentiator for you.

hello everyone ...i seriously need ur help...I have converted IIM kashipur ..but the problem is that i hav already Finished 1 yr at MIB from DSE and since i had dropped 1 yr before ,after my 10+2 for engg. my total drops wouldbe 2 and ill be 25 upon graduating from IIM-K that too without any work experience...

wat should i do, continue with mib or go for iim-k. ..plz help people...ur insights will be very appreciable.

It depends how perceive this. You need to think

  1. whether passing out from IIM kashipur would land you up in a job which would suffice for your 2 year drop and the fees gone
  2. You are dropping one more year so you should also factor in 1 year of work ex you would be losing out
  3. How much confidence you have in this new IIM

High profile companies primarily big FMCG and banks do consider whether you are drop out or not..so again there is a chance in this.

Think carefully and weigh your options properly before taking any decision

See your first thing on mind should be clearing your backlog right now and that too comprehensively that will give you boost of confidence you need

NGO experience is different but will require more dedication than in an IT Job , so think about it

Why do you think ,any thing is shameful , what you do in future matters rather than whatever you have done in past , it all depends on INTEREST, whether its IT or NGO , you need dedication

Bond is a dicey thing , and since your are not interested in IT , would not recommend going there right now

3. Try for some a business/ market analyst jobs in some consulting firms. Will big MNCs hire me even though i have a poor gpa??? i do have some chance of getting in some indian consulting companies hopefully, but still uncertain. and have no clue abt this line. self learning.

Again try get some knowledge about this field , before applying , consulting jobs are also tough to handle , would need time to settle down , as in initial periods more effort is required to learn job profile and responsibilities

I think first priority should be clearing the backlog

Second should be joining a company which suits your interest , try gauge the workload
Working in an IT company does NOT , disrespect your IIT Tag ,your professional performance makes the difference
Learn about Consulting first , so that you know , where you are headed

Prepare well , All d best

PS: Do think about a back up , if you dont get your dream college
U shudnt have done anythng but to continue serving the society after MBBS.Why is it a sin to take money from patients after treating them??
I mean treat poor patients free but no wrong in taking money from wealthy.
Anyways...u can go for MBA in India as well as abroad. Take CAT and GMAT. Search for good colleges and apply for them.

PLEASE...dont pass judgements without knowing about poverty and medicine..
It is not a fiction , but life . I cant be DR.Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde ! looting rich patients and saving poor people.
And ...TREATING..or servicing poor people is a myth : Who will give money for a blood test or ultra sound and who will pay for an operation theatre and assts , even if I alone decide to have a "free consultation "
if you ever see a 2 day old baby dying , for not able to gather some 5-10k of money to afford some tests, then you will know "the system" I am talking about.
And...about searching good college and applying , i know that. I am here to know which college better , and how best can i pursue to get in to that. Just because I requested for an advice , it doesnt mean that I dont know how to google. thank u

Hi PUYS,

I am a employee in CTS working under SAp-ABAP with 1 year of work exp.People are saying that there is more money in it as compared to other technologies. But i want to do MBA from a renouned college.Last time i attempted CAT I scored 93.xx %ile.So i know I that If i will study with haer work I can get into TOP-25 MBA colleges. My question is will i get more opportunities+money in SAP-ABAP or should i go for an MBA??Also if i do an MBA what type of job will I get based on my work exp.?

Dude age is not a problem for you. I think your problem is 2 years drop, 1 year out of which you can justify by saying that you prepared for CAT.
As IIM-Ka is a new IIM, I dont think it will have lateral placements in the first year so workex wont help.
Ultimately if you think you can get marginally better out of IIM-Ka than from MIB, then dont leave as again you will have to study one more year. As you are an insider, you are better aware of quality of education and placement opportunity in MIB, IIM-Ka's is up in the air right now. So choose wisely
BTW am a fellow IIM-Ka convert

India......... IIM name sales............

Go for it if you do not have a problem with losing the fees of your current institute..........

in the longer run it would only be the name IIM that would matter and thats it........

Hi All,

I am seeking for some career guidance here.

My Background:
Electronics and Telecomm Engineer from Mumbai University.
Working as Risk analyst in Credit card risk managment.(2 years)
Planning to appear for FRM , nov2011

I applied for MFE progs to US but could not get through. And due to some personal constraint I cant apply next year. Now I have to be in India only.

I am looking forward career in Mathematical Finance. I wish to deal with Maths and Programming more than finance itself. I want to be at technical side(Quant/Modeller/Developer). Can you please guide me varius options available?

I want to work here itself(India). So please let me know what are options available to progress towords career path outlined above.

I researched and got the following options:
1.CQF: Costly, not sure how much it is recognised in India.
2.Actuaries:Big time investment(I can do that without issue) ,not sure if it can help me to land in IB,derivatives, hedge funds.(not inclined to work for Life insurance, employee benifit sector)

the thing is the question for me is if not MFE then wht?
What can get closer to it being in India?

Thanks

Hi,

Could someone shed some light as per his/her personal opinion on moving into Securitized Products Research (RMBS/ABS/CMBS etc) from Structuring desk (1 year experience in Structuring desk).

Down the line: MBA in Finance.

My thoughts: Want to see the research side (recommendations/strategy etc), experience a different asset class rather than spanning the same asset class for some more time (since its stuck and not heading anywhere from the current structuring profile).

How would it reflect on the resume having accrued experience in two very different profiles/two very different asset classes?

Thanks.

Could someone advise me on the career options in the social/development sector post an MBA? Currently I am working as a mechanical engineer in an oil refinery in Cochin (3 years work ex). I have been working part-time in an NGO and feel that is the kind of work which I should be doing full-time. I am looking at pursuing a career in the social/development sector. What are my options? Which colleges should I look for admission? Is MBA even the right course to look at?
