Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Hello Everyone

I am in a big dilemma. I have been giving cat for the last two years with about a month of prep along with mocks. Both the time, i got 92 percentile.
As far as sectionals are concerned, i have always scored >97 %tile in Lr-di, 90-93 in verbal but have always screwed up in quant.
This year again , i will give cat.
Now I am confused whether to focus on my weak part(quant) or my stronger parts. I know even if i focus heavily on quant, the max. i can get is around 95%tile but due to this my score in other sections may go down. I do have time constraints ,so I can put a maximum of 2 hours/day for prep.

Please advice what strategy should I follow.

Give maximum time for Maths(quants) as this is the area wich can be improved only by practice. Dont think verbal requires that much practice as such. Out of 5, 3.5 for Quants 1 for DI 0.5 for verbal.

is it necessary to have classroom session frm an insti?..i do understand the value of mocks..so m thinking of joining test series only..(as i m wrking in wipro)..whc insti wll be better fr that..presently im based on bangalore..

"Necessary" isnt the word that shud be used here.It all depends on u.
IMHO, it always helps to join some coaching instt(provided if one is not born genius).Join that Sat and Sunday classes apart from taking mox.

1] Have a plan B : In case your acads are not stellar try to prepare just as hard for non-cat exams like xat, fms, iift etc. I was in your psoition a year ago bro and despite getting a good %tile > 99 I only got a call from indore, that too because I had 9.XX in my gpa (my school acads were average but not as horrible as IIM B,K thought and I missed out on L due to being a fresher engineer).
So to summarize, do as many non-cat mocks as CAT mocks, give as much importance to their question set, not one other single exam is like cat. They all are very different animals

2] my opinion is to prepare strengths first, and also attempt your strengths first. My strength was VA and I only used to do it for 25-30 mins during the exam and not come back to it. Similarly when you get to 30 min corresponding to 99+ in LRDI you will get a huge boost in confidence to tackle your weakness in quant to get it first above 90 then above 95. I think you needed 97 sectional to get a C call, which was the only score based call this year. So the journey will be hard, but for you bro it won't be impossible : ]

hi..
i have done PGDM in marketing as major and internationl business as minor in 2010 .i want to do ph.d in management...plz guide which r the colleges providing ph.d after pgdm...and what r the other competitive exams for ph.d..

Hi PGites,

I am new on PG. I need to ask a question.
About Me: around 5 years of work ex with (3 yrs in outsourcing industry (1 yr IT and 2 Yr KPO) and remaining 2 yrs in an Indian mobile operator Mktg team. All telecom experience.
Education: Btech IIT and CFA L1
Can you pls let me know if 2 year MBA (from IIM/XL/FMS) is relevant for me anymore. My evaluation: the opportunity cost is too high. I might not be able to extract much from it looking at my profile.
Can you pls suggest

Which are the best colleges in mumbai for MBA in Systems??

Another noob question

Is it true that a MS graduate from USA is considered overqualified here and does not get job easily in India??

Does a MS graduate gets a fatter paypacket in India than its counterpart in India??

Puys,
Please suggest a good practice book for quants apart from arun sharma. I dont have the material of any institute. Suggest so that it may suffice the purpose.

Thanx

Would suggest to go for Executive MBA only from IIM-A or MBA from ISB. 2 year MBA course might not be the right value addition for you in my opinion.

You can go for Quant by Nishit Sinha . Good questions on number system , algebra, P&C; and geometry can be found in it. Would be of good help and the level of questions is decent enough.

All the best!

Its upon u how well u can project the job at hand.........

If u can prepare for CAT along side the job take it up, it would benifit u in some way or the other.

Thanks, one more, would it be wise to give cat next year and gain some experience here???
I mean is this bpo job for 1 or may be 2 year worth taking and then give cat???? Im just 20 right now, so time not a constraint!!
Juss wanna clear this confusion, whether this job is worth taking or prepare hard for cat n give it this year.

hi,puys...i really have been wondering abt this for some time..i will apprise highly if i'll get feedback from some of u experienced guys.......i 'm in a power plant co. name "adani power pvt ltd.".. n in d post of sr. engg. for last 13-14 months and doing some exclusively heavy tension electrical operation works,so my query is how much these power plant experience does count when it comes to gettin into iims or top b- schools as i have heard these schools see the nuances of quality of experience of a candidate(or may not be).
After the completion of my b-tech i joined this comp. through campus selection and not being successful in cat 2009 i thought it'd give me some yrs of exp. which i could exploit,so puys clarify the dilemma of mine ki whether this exp: is relevant or not if yes then in what aspect.

my acads go like this........

Xth- 91% (orissa board)

XII th-87% (orissa board)

B Tech-8.5/10 (orissa board) year of passing-2010

cat '09-92 %le

cat '10- not applied (hardly found any time to prepare due 2 the nature of my job)

watin for quick response......

a power plant experience would come in very handy , 1 reason being if u have 2 + years of exp in any core field then it is very useful if u want to specialize in operations (esp in top 20 colleges)

Any work ex which is different from the usual IT work ex helps differentiate you , and differention helps.

Since your work would also involve managing lots of people /workeres in plant , it is always helful

Posting same query again n again duznt really help.
Y r u trying to so confuse urself wen there isnt any thing wich requires so much thot. Had it been a non voice based work , then yes surely there had bn a question whether to take it or not. U r 20 and BBA, wat else a BPO will offer u but voice based job wich is not considered.
Aaram se prep karo CAT ki..job ki itni jaldi hai ki koi bhi job le loge?

i think the second best one is Nishit Sinha. You can try that

Hi!

Ok this is going to be a long one. I have to take a decision and I need your help.
I'm a B.E. fresher from Delhi and I have been admitted to:
1) MIB, Delhi University, and
2) MHRM, IIT Kharagpur

Upon introspection, I realized:
I am interested in a career in HR. This is based on several thought out reasons and is not merely a whim of mine. However, I'll be totally honest with you. I have been a dabbler all my life. So I can never be sure if 5 years down the lane, I'll be enjoying the same thing that I would be presently engaged and interested in.I know this is not desirable and one should ideally be firm in ones stance, but this is how it is.
Also, I'm a family-oriented person. It would be a little difficult for me to stay for an extended period of time away from my parents and so will it be for them(Although they tell me to not pay any heed to this factor and go on).

Now, I could gather the following points regarding the institutes in question:

MHRM
Pros:
1) My interest in a career in HR is in alignment with the course
2) A Masters degree from IIT Kharagpur (If need be, it will help me to switch jobs with ease later on, since the industry perception of a masters from an IIT is not bad!)
3) A fiercely strong alumni network(Great possibilities of networking)
4) Hostel life- For once, I'd like to experience this. Reasons: i) Mobility to and from the department ii) Bonding with people from diverse backgrounds iii) Ease of assignment completion, discussions and experiencing team dynamics

Cons:
1) Location- Owing to the distance and the no. of holidays, I'll be able to visit home only once or twice a year. Also, it will be a little difficult for my parents to be without me and I don't want them to feel low.
2) Unknown placement statistics: Since the first batch to take admission was the 2010-2012 batch, they are, obviously, yet to come up with any placement stats.
3) Inflexibility to switch- If 5 years down the lane, I feel like switching to a marketing/finance profile, I will not be able to do so.

MIB
Pros:
1) Good(if not superbly awesome!) packages
2) Diversification of profiles: Based upon my electives, I can switch to jobs with International Business, Marketing, IT and Consulting profiles.
3) Proximity to my family(Since the institute is in Delhi)
4) Industry interaction(Guest lectures and knowledge straight from the horse's mouth! I know this factor sounds cliched, but it does help.)
5) Strategic locational advantage: It's easy for companies to come for recruitment. Apparently, this is something which cannot be overlooked.

Cons:
1) The institute is 20 kms. away from away from home. I'll have to traverse this distance everyday, leading to daily physical exhaustion(and then begin with the assignments for the day).
2) It would be difficult to switch to an HR profile.
3) I would not get the hostel.( For students residing in Delhi, hostel facilities are not provided.)

Please note: The above is NOT a comparative analysis. In no way, have the two B-schools been compared. I have simply stated the pros and cons without any comparison whatsoever.
How you can help:
Keeping in mind the aforementioned factors and my interests,
1) What would you suggest me to do?
2) I know that compromises have to be made, so on which factors should I compromise?
3) Any other helping facts, opinions, suggestions, dogmatic assertions, objective analyses...everything...(even groans!) are welcome.

Also, I have to do my PG this year and will not want to give CAT, FMS, JMET and XAT another go.

PS:
I'm reiterating:
In my post, in no way, have the two B-schools been compared. Since it is against Pagalguy rules, I advise you not to compare as well. Also, I do not require any information on any B-school here or any other particular institute(as told not to do in post 1 on this thread). What I want is your valued advice, based on my present circumstances.
With the "PG rules" been dealt with(phew!), please help.
Once again, I cannot stress enough the importance of your help to me right now.
Thanks!
