Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Hi
I want an honest answer to this question
My acads are very bad
X (Maharashtra Board 2004) - 80%
XII (CBSE 2006) - 66%
BE (Nagpur University 2010) - 62%
I appeared for CAT in 2009 and 2010 and secured 93.74 and 94.68 %iles respectively
I will be appearing for CAT for the last time in 2011
and i am working as a business analyst at MU SIGMA
I want to ask
1. how much will my bad acads bother me in my pursuit to get into top 20 b Schools in India?
2. Will my Work Ex give me an edge over the IT counterparts as I will be having 18 months of work ex by next June?

1)bad acads do bother to some extent but they can be made up by a good GD and PI and a good score. However for IIM's except C , ranchi it would be a bummer.
2)Yes your work-ex would definitely give you an edge provided you are able to put it across in a nice manner but it would be only 15 months till interviews. However it will not play any role in you getting a GD/PI call

To tell you the truth, yes average acads affect a candidate's chances of securing a seat in top b schools. But at the same time, there are some B-schools who only take into consideration the cat scores/xat scores etc.IIFT, FMS have their own exam and if you clear, then it all depends on your GD/PI. The weightage given to acads vary from 10% to 55%(only from IIM-A,B,K,I). Get top cat scores and that will override all the bad acads.
Most Bschools consider workex above 22 months. So it will not help much but still it will help you somewhat.
All the best

hii ??
anyone reading my query ??
I am madly checking for an answer every couple of hours. please guide me

someone guided me to this thread for the following request I posted :

Hello friends
I am here to post a Question which I myself have seen again and again for the past 2 years and read many of answers . Yet I am posting it , hoping that someone may like to give an advice to me , at a very personal level , considering my confused state.
I must confess that I kinda messed up my life a lot. A LOT.
I did m.b.bs...way back in 2006. While a student of medicine itself, I dint like the way the medical field is going and called it quits. All I learned by looking at life was , make good money and be good. Somehow I did not like to make money by treating patients , felt it like a sin and cruelty.
Fortunately I have some comfortable finances from family. Tried to do invest and do something in : real estate ,construction , finance , media...
I know you must be wondering why I tried so many. Somehow , call it bad luck.. I just could not find right partners anywhere and I was too scared to put my money anywhere. I ended up with dead investments. Then when I question myself , I felt may be I dont know those managerial talent or I was always a wrong person at wrong times among wrong places.
Now , I want to see , if I can do an M.B.A , preferably in a foreign place, which can just give me a comfortable job and a life somewhere . Life at personal front has become too bad and I want to get out of my country and place. Dont want to face a life here anymore. I want to STUDY a lot about money and management and business and I dont mind being a constant student and research scholar too. I feel I am better at books than practical issues.
Can someone guide me , if now , with all this messed up profile , can I go for an MBA abroad ? EVEN IF ITS A PAID COURSE , i dont mind , I can buy it. if yes, can anyone please give a detailed insight about it ?
thanks friends.
PLEASE suggest me :
I am a small town guy. Locked up in the same town for years , have no friends who has knowledge about these educations. I am a meritorious student. Can study for days without sleep and can work very very hard to crack any exam. I am really good at books and studies. SOmehow i just had no clue when it comes about managing people. PLEASE help me to pursue an MBA , preferably out of INDIA..and if not...even INDIA is okay

U shudnt have done anythng but to continue serving the society after MBBS.Why is it a sin to take money from patients after treating them??
I mean treat poor patients free but no wrong in taking money from wealthy.
Anyways...u can go for MBA in India as well as abroad. Take CAT and GMAT. Search for good colleges and apply for them.

Most of the top league B-Schools have the provision of placing people with high work ex seperately under the head of lateral placements and then the rest of the batch which is a normal recruitment as we all know !

Lateral placements criteria from colleges to colleges.. might vary from 20 months to 28-30 months even and may be more in few cases.

So, if one is above the cutoff work ex of his/her respective college, (s)he is eligible to sit in lateral placements.

Hope this helps!

while considering the work ex....only RELEVANT work ex is considered or the general/overall experience is considered

Hi All,

My current package is 6.25pa with 11 months of exp and I am trying CAT for the first & mostly last time.I have read many blogs and stuff like that, to decide whether I should try for it or not...My concern is that, if I get into some good B school and clear MBA from there, will it be an aid in my career growth monetarily..Because after 2 years of work experience I can easily get a handsome sum of around 9-10 lakh pa..which can be there after my 2 years of MBA as well..Personally I am not aiming to start any business after MBA.

As I know what I am thinking is not 100% right and there are many other different advantages of MBA, I would like someone to list them to me so that I can be more confident and passionate about my preparation...I might sound silly, but if someone can help me, I will be really grateful..

Hey guys i need some serious advice for one of my friends.

Her parents are hellbent on sending her to USA for pursuing MS in IT.But she plans to return back to India after completing her MS.She has completed her Bsc in IT.

Now for doing MS she will need to do one year MSc in IT here and then after completing that, carry on with MS.

Now here are my queries:

Is is a wise decision to do such thing or waste of time and money?

What value will this degree have in India?

Will it provide better job opportunities in India compared to an MBA graduate?

Is it better to do MBA from here only rather than going for MS(with no plans to work there)?

Will a MS from USA with say 1 year of work xp get more pay than a MBA from India with same work xp?

please answer these questions,as she does not have much time to decide and need some solid information to show to her parents to change their opinion.

Hi Puys,

I am looking to make my profile impressive for colleges like SPJIMR in which profiles are very important. I want to improve on my extra curricular activites. right now what i have are certificates in school and college level in inter school events and college fests. I also volunteered in the Common Wealth Games 2010 in delhi. I have mainly three questions:

1. Me and my friends started a website designing company in februray last year. We did a few projects also. But our company isn't registered or anything, we just own a domain. will that count in extra curriculars?

2. I want to get involved in an NGO. Two of my friends recently designed websites for NGO's. How can i get in touch with an NGO and do something for them? (Are there any specific NGO's which are endorsed by SPJIMR etc)

3. Any other suggestions anyone might have on how to make your profile impressive?

If you are not bored yet and need some info about me before answering:
I am doing engineering right now. giving my 6th semesters. will start with my final year in august and give my first CAT this year.

---->Wise decision can only be seen in hindsight , Not all universities provide the same opportunities be it for MS in US or MBA in india

What value will this degree have in India?
--->That again depends on what university is it from , the well renowened colleges are obvisuly recognized
Will it provide better job opportunities in India compared to an MBA graduate?
--->depends on from which college MBA is done , colleges range from excellent to bullshit .

Is it better to do MBA from here only rather than going for MS(with no plans to work there)?
--> If one plans to go to US for MS and come here without working , then you have to realise that things might get difficult especially if it is not from top 20 universities.

Will a MS from USA with say 1 year of work xp get more pay than a MBA from India with same work xp?
--->Not neccesary depends on type of work experience , knowldedge and ability .post MBA salaries for freshers can we anywhere from 20-25 lacs to 1-2 lacs per annum..

At the risk of being called blunt -that is precisely, what I call a myopic view of an MBA -
Why do you want to opt for MBA - this is THE question you should answer first and foremost -
An MBA degree is bound to provide you life long returns - So just comparing your salary after MBA with your salary after two more years of working may not reflect the true picture.

Hey puys..
I have a unique query.. I did my engg in september 2009.. And, took CAT the same year.. gt a pathetic percentile.. so, i started hunting for the job after the results gt declared in march 2010.. worked as a php trainee for five months in some IT company and later resigned and worked as free lancer till december 2010.. Meanwhile, i also applied to an year-long course PGDIBO from IGNOU.. Im about finish my course in july 2011 and thinking of taking up CAT again.. I feel its tough for me if i work and prepare simultaneously.. so will dropping i guess "again" is justifiable with the work i did n a IGNOU course.. most of people say that i've done nothing all these years.. so low on confidence just because of that..I have two interview calls of BANK POs.. so in case if i get a job i may join as PO.. but intend to take CAT even after getting the job..
Help me out plz!!

So shall I assume that a work-ex of +20 months would suffice the eligibilty majorly? Whats' the abberation apart from pay packages?
