Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Pls help,

My profile
10th: 80
12th: 85
Grad(NIFT): 7.6
Cat 2010: 89

Work ex: 22 months in operations in SME

Query: Looking forward to 3 options (proirity wise):
- Career in ERP / PLM Implementation Consultant (Prob is dat though i am interested but finding it hard to get even a job interview call in the same, as only a few / rare of my seniors are in dis profile...wat to do?)

- Retail Merchandising / Buyer (Just cleared 1st round of interview call with a reputed brand, but after dat still waiting for other rounds......my exp in operations is causing a hindrance to enter here)

- Drop 1 yr and prepare again for CAT 2011 and probably aim for a supply chain profile with Operations MBA, as i am real frustrated in my current job and will anyways leave it in few days..........)

Any views guys

P.S : a lot of IT guys are here on pagalguy, so please provide some feedback on my 1st ERP ? PLM option pls pls...

1. Getting into ERP domain is very difficult if u don't have prior exp. Another way out is to take a training from some reputed institute and they will provide u placement assistance.
2. Not much idea abt it.
3. Drop is not a gud option as it is taken as negative by many B Schools. So I ll suggest get in a job which doesn't require long working hours and prepare for CAT simultaneously.

All the best.

Guys...
I am an electrical engg....I had left my job with a reputed manufacturing Co. last yr to prepare for MBA exams.....But it worked adversely....availability of too much extra time made me too complacent....n i m here with nuin SUBSTANTIAL in my hand....i ll still get an admit in some tier 2 colg...but thts nt me....
i still wanna give one more try.....so i decided to take a job.....whatever is offered.....luckily today i have a job with a reputed FMCG...the job is the area of supply chain management ( SAP applications)
My dream is to pursue management is marketing......however rite now its not possible for me to switch dept in this existing company nor i am willing to take a risk to let go this job to search for a new company which can offer me a marketing role....
Lets say, i do get some calls from top B schools...in tht case, i do the panelists view this case...

an electrical engg. having worked wih a core electrical co. for 1.5 yrs leaving job, takes a gap of 6 months, thn joins an FMCG to work in supply chain...n still wanna pursue marketing ???
Is this case defend-able??

Replies anticipated.....

Goa Institute of Management
2010-2012 batch

Though i am not doing interns in SBI , i am sharing what i know.. the profile oriented towards their operational activities is more likely to be offered .. with stipend not being on higher end as it is a govt. bank and generally there is no policy of paying high to interns.

Hope this helps !

Everything is defendable..just a bit of introspection and confidence on your decisions is required 😃

Working in supply chain of FMCG is a respectable profile and it shows your inclination towards managerial profiles ... and many of the interviewees do not mention the inclination towards any specialization adamantly in interviews.

There is no need to tell your inclination unless asked and that too with the profile where defence would be slightly tough ( not impossible ) . so, better not to do any such thing yourself in interview.

Secondly, as of now...focus on studies and get better score to fetch calls from tier 1 colleges rather than thinking what will happen in interviews and demotivating yourself. Be confident that in case you get the calls , you will convert them and will back your job switch and career plans effectively.

Cheers!

Hi 😃
I wrote my Class 12th Board Exams, this March. I had the Sciences.
Well, I wish to get into the field of Advertising. The idea of Brand Management really interests me. And, MICA is my dream college.
Can you suggest me which course should I pursue for my under-graduation?
Of course, Engineering is a chunky option Science students have, after school. But, I have no idea how four years of Engineering would contribute to my Advertising/BM career.
So, please help me choose the right course that would help me be successful in the career field I want to get into.
Additional Info: I'm expecting a percentage in the 80s, and I'm not expecting a great result from my Engineering Common Entrances.
Also, I'm interested in Literature, so BA (h) English would be a nice option. It would also help me be more creative and expressive, which is a requisite in BM. But, other than that, would it help?
On the official MICA site, they've said that students from all backgrounds (Science, Commerce, Arts) can pursue PGPCM, and stuff.
But, which courses would really look good on my CV, for BM? And which courses will prepare me for a good BM career?
I also plan to prepare for my CAT/GMAT during my Under-grad years. I've also learnt that Work Ex is really essential in BM, so I'm up for internship during my UG years.
Please help. I need to decide a course.
:)

Bytheway, BM is my choice. But if I develop interest in any of the other verticals (MR, MM, AP), I might pursue that. Nevertheless, I've heard the transition to other verticals is pretty seamless. So, that isn't an issue.
But, BM is my choice, as of now.
Please help. :)
Thanks.
:lookround:

i was about to quit in feb this year of quiting my job as it was 12 hours , 6 and half days schedule and my energy was all drained off completely after office hours. I had decided to call it quit just after six months and work towards 2011 CAT whole heartedly! I was then directed to this thread :
where i went thru each post, almost all suggested on NOT quiting as it will be hard to explain in the interviews abt the gap and questions like : HOW WILL U MANAGE BIG COMPANY, WEN U CUD NOT MANAGE UR PREP AND JOB ! and yes i did think that was right. so i continued with my job . As per the preperation goes - will start soon (* hopefully ), quite exited to c so many friends make it this year . but i am sure down the lane i will have to take time off in august - september , wen i will complete 12 -13 months at site. till then i will prepare along with job!
now my question is : are there any slots for giving weightage in experience category , like 0-6 months , 6- 15 months etc ???????
if there is such slots , pls tell me where will 12- 13 months of work experience in two years count? will it be questionabble at interviews ?

Hi..

This year I had appeared for CAT and scored a 96.98 percentile..
I applied to IMT Ghaziabad.. and have very recently converted it. :cheerio: Although we will have to wait till the end of 1st yr to get our specialization, which worries me as I may not get my preferred spec.

Prior to this, I had been placed in my campus recruitment in TCS as ASE

My dilemma, as you would have understood by now, is to go to IMT G or stay with TCS, gain work ex, and apply for a better b school after 2-3yrs.

My profile reads:
Class X: 90.8% (ICSE)
Class XII: 93.0% (ISC)
B.Tech CSE 4th yr from WBUT
Extracur: Nothing special

What worries me most, is that considering I am from a middle class family, 11.05L (IMT's fees) is a lot of loan... and frankly, I am worried about the ROI.

Is my being worried justified? What should I do??

CTS is a better company than Wipro as far as I know through my friends. But the prob with u is Wipro has given u DOJ and CTS hasn't. But still I ll say join CTS keeping ur MBA in view. meanwhile u can preparing for CAT 2011 if u r planning to take it. The DOJ will come as iT companies have huge requirements now a days.

Yes they will, just be smart while reasoning your leave, I have a friend he joined Wipro and left the same in 1.5 months by intimating as to some urgent family issues and left.

Within the training period t is not much of an issue to leave, but once you are assigned a project you might need to serve a notice. Just dont declare while leaving that you r leaving only to join some other company and everything will be fine.

Guys, I have been placed in "opera solutions"(as JRDA (junior research development analyst) and "Aricent"(profile not known).Which one should i join????????????????????????????????Plz........... ........help me as i am totally confused.....................: ?.Also give reasons.............

Hello,

I recently finished my Bcom and got recruited by Goldman Sachs, Bangalore for the operations division.

Now i'm aware that this is a back end job and i thought that a little experience before an MBA would help a great deal. I`m also planning to give my CFA during my time at Goldman.

My question is whether it's possible to shift to a front office position once you pass you CFA lvl 1.

I heard that the operations division of goldman is a dead end job. So i`m really at a dilemma as to accept the offer or not.

Are the placements at IIM A,B,C by investment banks still at Back office? or do they recruit for front office positions?

Thanks
KJ

Grads frm IIM A, B, C are normally offered front office jobs...

Some of the core roles in area like research are available at back office. But of course only junior roles. Beyond that one has to move to front office.

Have u given thought to the scenario: what will happen when u again come to join Wipro in some later part of ur life ?

I accept that as of now u can leave Wipro and join CTS. the work exp u ll show from here onwards will be from the consecutive months or as applicable. Then that ll surely pose a prob.

To cite u an example: a student from my campus, during final placements, was rejected for the same reason. He has left Infy during training citing these kinda reasons and had joined some other IT organization.

Whatever u do now ll have consequences on ur future. So kindly decide after giving it a thought.
All the best.

Hi Puys

Need some dispassionate career advice here. First, my profile:

Xth - 90.00
XIIth - 85.2 (PCMB)
Graduation: B.A. English (H), DU, 53-54% (final year results aren't out yet).

I'll be 22 at the end of June. I have a gap year as I went to the US for my undergrad (in English) but came back after the recession.

Took CAT for the first time in 2010 after 4-5 months of prep. Scored 99.27 and had calls from FMS, MDI and IIM-L. Missed XL and IIFT (the only other two exams I gave) cut-offs by a whisker.

Couldn't convert FMS or IIM-L. My poor acads were pointed out in both the interview, and I suspect that, along with zero work-ex cost me a convert. But I did convert MDI (PGPM) with a rank of 254.

Now my query is, what would be a better career decision at this stage: join MDI, or do an MBA later?

I'm pretty much convinced of doing an MBA later, after 3-4 years, but joining MDI is definitely tempting, more so since the college is in Delhi itself.

The other option I have is to do an M.A. in English from DU. I obviously have a strong interest in the English language. Plus, it would allow me to remedy my poor graduation marks.

Further, I don't see any point in getting a job. I make Rs. 30,000+ p.m. from my part time freelancing and internet marketing business (and this is steadily growing at a healthy rate), so I already make more than what any job could offer me. Instead of slogging it out in a job where I will likely make less than what I already do, I feel it would be better to do one more degree.

So what would you say is a better career route: go for an MBA from MDI now, or join M.A. English, build up my profile, then go for a top notch international MBA/IIM-A,B,C? I really have my eyes set on a college like HBS or Stanford GSB, and feel I can make it given time and opportunity. MDI is great, but I do feel I can do better. But I just don't want to get complacent and leave a bird in the hand for two prospective birds in the bush.
