Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

 to all here....

I was looking for such a forum and what better place than PG :cheerio:.

My profile is as below

School
Class X (CBSE) - 86.6%
Class XII(CBSE) - 71.6%
** Maths Mark was 46 in class XII even tough it was 93 in class X !!!

extra curriculars : During School days , very active in quizzing (won quite a few too including some major ones), music and elocution as well... :-)

College
B.E- Mechanical Engg - 76 % from a not so bad college in Chennai

Job
1. 5 months(training) in a reputed IT company. Things did not work out and quit the company

2. 2. years and 4 months Experience in Engineering and Construction Major.Joined as GET(Graduate Engineer Trainee and presently a senior Engineer)

--> Project 1 Was involved in a lot of site work. I would say it was kind of like the "baptism by fire" kind of things. Standing outdoors all day during the work time. Since our job was that of cross country pipeline construction, job involved a lot of management of issues in remote locations. Value this experience as one of a kind. This cannot be directly related to an MBA, but learnt a lot with regard to management of issues and pre planning in tough situations . In addition the project was one of it's kind in the world and the it was not the regular "weld, trench and lay" type of pipelines.

--> Project 2 An extension of Project 1, In this project I am in office related work. Could learn a bit about management of the project and being in office get a bird's eye view and understanding about the project rather than in bits and pieces at site .Involved in a lot of analysis of contract specification and also data provided by client.

** A lot of work in projects just comes up and we are expected to understand and do the "required" without any "official" initiation. Basically understand and do the job in the most pro active manner
MBA

Always wanted to be the management side of things since my college final year. My work also got me actively involved in project management. Even though I have a penchant for project work ,particularly analysis of data and suggesting better methods, I would like to do an MBA for the sheer variety of options it provides. As a person who likes to work on new things, I would say an MBA/PGDM would be the right platform to do it.

P.S : Long term idea of entrepreneurship also (12-15 years later)..

CAT

CAT 2007 - 58
CAT 2009 - 39

I would say the above two attempts wthout any proper preparation or intent were terrible mistakes on my part

CAT 2010 - 75

With a little more effort , but still not anywhere near serious managed 75.

One thing was clear. QA needed to be worked upon. !! Got 39 in QA , 75 in DI and 93 in VA..

CAT 2011: I am in plans for quitting this job. I want to seriously try for CAT and other exams too .. Studying while in here is not possible since Reason 1: I don have a coaching institute anwwhere near my place and Reason 2: Projects are always 7 days a week job , and with this kind of situation I am sure I cannot do justice to my job and neither to MBA prep . Reason 3: Also I do not see a long term future in this line of job
Hence..

But I am concerned and a lil bit confused whether this is a good step. Presently my CTC is around 5.5-6 LPA and leaving this job and then not getting into a top 20 colleged will be tragic to say the least...

Now With this kind of profile , I am not sure how much the odds are for me or against me . I am sure with a lot of great Pagals here , my concerns and confusions will be just past tense soon .

Guys , Please do help me out here with the situation

Not an easy read through my profile , and certainly not short, Many thanks in advance to all here....

 again guys....

Dear frnd,

Just one question, do you believe that by dropping a job you would be better equiped to handle CAT 2011????
by better equiped I mean to say you would really need to sweat hard, no offences but even without prep, the scores of 58 and 39 are not acceptable atleast from an engg. This said if you leave your job and go for preprations you need to be fully commited to the task, because if you dont commit urself, thn again you will end up in the similar range of mrks may be say 80%ile.

for securing a good college the first step would be to get atkeast 95%ile + in CAT. just give online mocks and see whether you are able to achieve the same. I would say from personal exp. that if you have enough conviction you can achieve wht you strive for. Even I was a project manager and was located on remote sites all the time and had a CTC of arnd 8lacs.

But still i did not leave my job and strived hard for CAT. it's just about how yo manage your time and thats it.

Because leaving a job and not being able to secure a good college will leave you in a dissarray, just analyze your own abilities and see if you can go above 95%ile.

if you cant prepare along with the job.

This is not to discourage you, but to give you some realistic information.

Best of Luck

Dear Animesh,

Thanks and lot for the reply. 😃 I really appreciate it...

As you said I fully agree with "the scores of 58 and 39 are not acceptable atleast from an engg.".... That was in CAT 2007 and 2009. However this year ie CAT 2010 I had managed 75 percentile and this time what i did do was manage the sections properly. CET result also managed a 85 percentile again with close to zero prep... !! I understand the points you have made and will certainly look out for these before i make my final call...

Thanks and Lot again... :-):cheerio:

Hi Puys,
Let me explain my current state.I am working as a technology analyst in Deloitte Touche Tohamatsu in Hyderabad. I have one year experience in SAP package . My childhood dream is doing an MBA. I would like to orient myseld into the direction. I have a job offer at Siemens in Pre sales operations for ERP package. Please assist me in deciding amongst the two.
Please give me valuable suggestions.

With season officially over with CET result...i am looking fwd to 2011-12 season......
Now i made this biggest mistake of my life to quit my job with Siemens Ltd. for MBA prep....to my horror, my marks without job were less thn wht i managed with job.....
Luckily i have got a job with a reputed co. in the field of SAP application of supply chain management (SCM).....which is gonna begin next week....
Now the kinda job offered to me.....one can blindly say tht if i work here for say 2 years...i ll be building a solid profile for MBA operations....
However i wish to pursue MBA in marketing.....
So can somebody tell me if my job in the field of SCM will be helpful for building my future career in the field of marketing ??

P.S. an immature but matlab ka question : wht is the avg salary offered to MBA operation guys in the top colleges ??

no offence,bt I dont think readers will think of u as intelligent or courageous after readin ur post & screwed up exams r not d reason 4 this .....

1.If u r concerned abt money, dont bother with MBA.Coz gud ppl in SAP bill @ 10000 bucks an hour.....really gud SAP-ERP pros earn far more than equally competent ppl in other fields.....

2.If marketing is ur passion, why r u still in SAP - SCM ? u shud rather motivate ur company 2 allow u 2 work in business development even @ a reduced remuneration package as an intern !!! That is passion....

Abt, Ops vs finance, that info is readily available if u r willing to search....

Hope it helps u....
Hi Puys,
I have a query. I had 82% in Xth standard but due to some problem I managed around 59% in XIIth. I have around 70% in B.Tech. I know IIMs put a lot of importance on acads, but what do I need to do to get a call from ABCL? Is there any chance even? What about with 2yrs work ex?

Please let me know, thanks.

hey friend i have a similar problem as yours but i have low percentage (according to the great pundits of our education system - in short BUDDHAS - who sets the policies for the admission we dont have physical brain and so we can not think )59.6. irrespective of overoptimistic replies which you will get in this forum by the most intelligent puys i would like to give you some realistic advise as i was in the same boat last year and got 95.31 % ile this year. believe me even if you get a call from the top institutes , it would be extremely difficult to convert those calls as the very people who get the interviews are the same BUDDHAS and we need to convince them who are very rigid in their love towards written marks instead of a skill and proof of workex instead of your capability and desire for learning.

all i want you tell you that go ahead with sound backup plan as you will feel disheartened when you would be rejected by marks scored in 12 and grads.

i know the followers and bootlickers of those pundits will groan this post but i wanted to make my points clear and give some realistic views.

i was also got the advice which you will receive from others puys that the rule is that you need to have 50 % or more to be eligible for any course but the ground reality is different for final conversion for many institutes including some world famous iims started one or two years ago as nobody gives different marks scored in different parameters for e.g. i think no institutes gives how much you scored in gd and pi and we give this weightage to the cat score and according to this you get this much marks in that parameter. so all depends on the hands of the interviewers who will take your interview so if he thinks that 12 th and grad percentage is a true measure of potential and you will find those then you wont get a final convert

hope you are getting my point

dont worry and concentrate on ur grad...as u can normalize ur score in 120th 12th wid good grad...some colg like SP jain, IIMS give good amount of weightage to ur grad...so do well in grad and prepare for cat....u wll get a good colg

All the best....

PS: getting a good B-school shud not be one's ambition, being successful shud be

Hi Dear,

I would suggest that the best thing for u would be to prepare for CAT full time in these comming months as it will boost your chaces aplenty.

As for certifications you can go JAVA cercitfication and other such certifications as provided by Proquest

Hi Dear,

Just one thing IIM's are not the end of the world......!!!!!!! and with so many new cropping up they would be highly diluted in value.

You can eaisily get a topnotch college provided you perform well in CAT/XAT or any other exam u opt for, just dont worry Acads do play a role but 70-75 althrough is good enough.

Best of Luck

HEllo puys,,, i appeared for CAt 2010 and scored 93 percentile.. i also cleared IIFT written and SCMHRD...everything was going great and i was quite confident of clearing interviews.I was the best in GD/PI and was always complimented for my communication skills and knowledge base. infact i trained people for GD/Pi in my college and training intstitute.

however to my dismay,, i could not clear either of the the GD/PI round.. i am not able to stand up again after these rejects,, m not able to concentrate on anything and this realization is eating me up.. i have lost all my confidence and feel totally depressed.. its been a month now and i am now in a big time depression..have almost forgotten when did i smiled last.. i am not at all motivated to prepare again for the next season... i dont know hot to overcome this,, each moment seems heavy..

i have got a job at accenture as a software engineer but i am not at all a software guy.. i do not look forward to do this job but i have no other option left...

i dont know what to do,, can somebody who had been in a similar position help me out of this...
my problem might seem small but i have lost all my dreams and and its becoming life and death situation...plz do suggest what should i do??

Please do guide me ...

I gave CAT 2010, and after scoring a very decent percentile got calls from a lot of good b-schools. However due to a lot of personal/financial problems, I wont be able to take admission in them. The only feasible option for me is an HR prog that I have got in a relatively cheaper b-school. which is no doubt a good college even though it does not rank in the top 15 or 20.

My question is this - If I go for the HR course this year, and join an HR profile after the course completion, will it be possible for me to change my stream to Finance say after 4 - 5 years of working in HR? I am interested in Finance, and if I keep building up my profile with Finance related certifications and diploma courses, will it be possible for me to make the transition from HR to Finance?

Thanks

dear frnd,

Don't be so mean to urself. at tyms we dont get what we want and thus giveup on all that we have, we should not.

I had a similar situation after graduation and joined into TechM, I never liked being an IT guy but I did join l8r switched jobs and wen into core Project Mgmt, and now am doing a MBA.

things fall in place provided you try and bring them together, I would just suggest that next time apply for more institutes there are a lot of great institute out thr it's not always about being in the top 10, thats what I believe in......

Take care and Best of Luck...

Hey Guys,
Let me introduce myself,
Im a Chemical Engineer from Manipal Institute of Technology and have just got a job in Accenture as a ASE.
Acads in 10th were 89%, and 77% in 12th with a 8.2 CGPA in college
Giving CAT this year ( have already started prep for the same)
Been pretty involved in extra curricular activities through college and have various Positions of responsibility to show for it
I have two main questions
1) Will coming from an IT background seriously affect my chances of getting into a top B school?
2) Are my acads in your opinion so bad as to further hamper chances?
