Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Hi puys,
I am an auto enthusiast and but am not an auto engineer even though I am one,but in the field of electronics.I have also completed a 6 months automobile training program from a reputed premium car dealership in mumbai.

The reason that I am planning to pursue MBA is because I would like my engineering background and my training to prove useful as I wish to work in the automobile industry.

I was also working for a premium car dealership (briefly) as a sales consultant.even though I got to ride seriously fast and luxurious cars,I didn't like the job of sales. I have made up my mind to do my MBA for sure but in which field not yet as I am confused which specialization will help me get associated with the auto industry?

Kindly help this confused soul.

What exactly in Auto Industry do you want to be in ? It is a complex industry .. Has manufacturing, Supply Chain , Inventory Management ,Production Management Logistics apart from your backoffice and Sales functions..

If you are not comfortable with Sales.,.. on MBA with Supply Chain/Manufacturing/Logistics Focus .. as they all invariably are associated with any Industry which manfactures and sells..

Also you dint mention do you want to be on Operations side or not . Invariably there are other areas which connect auto . Automotive finance, Luxury Auto , Auto Retail, Marketing & Branding , Logistics & Transport,

However if you say F1 , Le mans . things change differently ๐Ÿ˜ƒ You will also need to be in those countries which are intomanufacturing .
India is becoming a fast paced Auto manufacturing destination , but India will never a luxury Auto destination until a market for it appears..

Auto or essentially another form of Manufacturing Industry , so if you want to learn about Auto , join Manufacturing firm and learn about Supply Chain and whil gaining over the years experience you can move into Auto industry using your manufacturing industry expertise. Hoever this is slighly difficult . So if you can even make it in Transport Industry and Logistics , tats a start ..

However if you are interested in Luxury Auto and F1 as purely fashion /ride/money thing ๐Ÿ˜ƒ , then its a different case , You just need to get rich in any field and they lap into you ๐Ÿ˜›

Cheers

thanks a lot for your reply.I am definitely not into auto for the 'bling bling' factor

I am new to the world of MBA so I have very little or no idea about the other fields you mentioned. Also i have heard that in operations there is a lot of maths involved,is it true ? because if it is ,I'm not good at it.

Like the post 'why not HR?' are there any posts that will shed some light on the above mentioned specialized fields ?

Frankly as long as i am surrounded by automobiles,i know i will do good in any field i select.

cheers.

P.S. Will MBA in HR help me get into the auto industry ?

That means the marks as would be stated on your degree until otherwise mentioned, some universities give different weightage to 1st year, 2nd year and so on........

Thus if not mentioned otherwise it would mean the %age as mentioned on the degree.

guys need honest answers
gave cat 2010 70%ile ,snap 86, n many other xams , OBC candidate
10th class %age = 59.4
12 = 67.5
grad in bba = around 52 % [ my university really sucks in giving marks , few toppers only manage 65 % n above]
hardly any extra curricular activities

im sure i can manage a 90-95 score in cat 2011 and other exams but will that be really helpful as they might reject me gdpi due to v poor acads considering so much ppl apply . colleges that might take are itm ,bimtech , srcc but should i drop the year for these colleges ? or take take admission this year in whatever decent college i get in this year .

colleges i like were nmims ,fore ,lbsim , kj somaiya , siib , iift , fms , gim ,mib etc that have placements 6+ preferably govt ones that have obc reservation .

also i saw this EPGDCFM will this certificate help me being a fresher with no work ex ? if i do drop a year should i apply for it ?

Hi Puys,
I have a query. I had 82% in Xth standard but due to some problem I managed around 59% in XIIth. I have around 70% in B.Tech. I know IIMs put a lot of importance on acads, but what do I need to do to get a call from ABCL? Is there any chance even? What about with 2yrs work ex?

Please let me know, thanks.

see the criteria changes every year for IIM's....dey are experimenting with the batch profile.
and as of now, dey give very high weight to acads, and very less to work ex...some even dont care abt work ex.
but if u get a call, u wll certainly have an advantage coz of ur work exp.

ur 12th marks can create some problem, but if u can get 99.5+ %ile, u wll get around 2-3 calls

PS:- i am also in the same league as urs 10th-80, 12th-70 B.tech 62

personally i would suggest give ur best shot at cat 11, and take admission in other colgs which dont consider acads a lot like IIMC, IIMRanchi, MDI, IMT, NMIMS etc

all the best

hi evry 1.....I have worked for an NGO and I am in need of the certificate of the same they are willing to give it the problem is nobody is aware of the format can anyone give me the format of an NGO certificate

Thanks in advance

if ur interview might hae gone well at IMT u can hope to get through to IMT-N.

as for retail ther is only one glitch that I have seen, that the avg payscales in retail are pretty disaapointing to start with.
 to all here....

I was looking for such a forum and what better place than PG :cheerio:.

My profile is as below

School
Class X (CBSE) - 86.6%
Class XII(CBSE) - 71.6%
** Maths Mark was 46 in class XII even tough it was 93 in class X !!!

extra curriculars : During School days , very active in quizzing (won quite a few too including some major ones), music and elocution as well... :-)

College
B.E- Mechanical Engg - 76 % from a not so bad college in Chennai

Job
1. 5 months(training) in a reputed IT company. Things did not work out and quit the company

2. 2. years and 4 months Experience in Engineering and Construction Major.Joined as GET(Graduate Engineer Trainee and presently a senior Engineer)

--> Project 1 Was involved in a lot of site work. I would say it was kind of like the "baptism by fire" kind of things. Standing outdoors all day during the work time. Since our job was that of cross country pipeline construction, job involved a lot of management of issues in remote locations. Value this experience as one of a kind. This cannot be directly related to an MBA, but learnt a lot with regard to management of issues and pre planning in tough situations . In addition the project was one of it's kind in the world and the it was not the regular "weld, trench and lay" type of pipelines.

--> Project 2 An extension of Project 1, In this project I am in office related work. Could learn a bit about management of the project and being in office get a bird's eye view and understanding about the project rather than in bits and pieces at site .Involved in a lot of analysis of contract specification and also data provided by client.

** A lot of work in projects just comes up and we are expected to understand and do the "required" without any "official" initiation. Basically understand and do the job in the most pro active manner
MBA

Always wanted to be the management side of things since my college final year. My work also got me actively involved in project management. Even though I have a penchant for project work ,particularly analysis of data and suggesting better methods, I would like to do an MBA for the sheer variety of options it provides. As a person who likes to work on new things, I would say an MBA/PGDM would be the right platform to do it.

P.S : Long term idea of entrepreneurship also (12-15 years later)..

CAT

CAT 2007 - 58
CAT 2009 - 39

I would say the above two attempts wthout any proper preparation or intent were terrible mistakes on my part

CAT 2010 - 75

With a little more effort , but still not anywhere near serious managed 75.

One thing was clear. QA needed to be worked upon. !! Got 39 in QA , 75 in DI and 93 in VA..

CAT 2011: I am in plans for quitting this job. I want to seriously try for CAT and other exams too .. Studying while in here is not possible since Reason 1: I don have a coaching institute anwwhere near my place and Reason 2: Projects are always 7 days a week job , and with this kind of situation I am sure I cannot do justice to my job and neither to MBA prep . Reason 3: Also I do not see a long term future in this line of job
Hence..

But I am concerned and a lil bit confused whether this is a good step. Presently my CTC is around 5.5-6 LPA and leaving this job and then not getting into a top 20 colleged will be tragic to say the least...

Now With this kind of profile , I am not sure how much the odds are for me or against me . I am sure with a lot of great Pagals here , my concerns and confusions will be just past tense soon .

Guys , Please do help me out here with the situation

Not an easy read through my profile , and certainly not short, Many thanks in advance to all here....

 again guys....
