First KPMG, then McKinsey......still you confirm with some other people
mohit_1598 Says
i don't understand why you want to shift ur training process if you are pursuing engineering please do have some technical experience non technical will not work at all.

Hey Harshud... i second mohit on this... even IIMs look for 'RELEVANT WORK -X' .. :wow::wow: implies if you hv done engg. and has joined a Marketing firm.. you'll not be in a very good stead as far as work-x points are concerned or impression in PI is concerned for that matter..:shocked:

So do consult some experienced fellows b4 makin a move.. ATB

I've already done technical trainings from Airtel and Moser baer R&D.; So I wanted to do a non-tech internship this time. And as I wrote, non-technical companies do come to my campus for recruitment.
So, it would be great if you could advise on which one of the three I should go for.
thank you!

Hi,

It's good to see so many helping out others on these kind of matters. Please have some patience to go through my long post and give ur valuable advice.

I have 10 months of work-ex at a leading MNC in the entry level position. Towards the end of last year, I got another job based on pure luck. Was never really looking forward to that job. Attended the interview after seeing the package which was almost twice of what I used to get before. Hence I left the MNC for this small organization thinking that by the time I appear for next years' CAT (cat 2011), I would have almost 2 yrs of work ex which would help me in the admission as well as placement process at colleges.

The unfortunate part is that on joining this new company, I was totally shattered. I realized that i did not do my homework properly. The work culture was pathetic. We were supposed to work, work and work. No team outings, no good employee-employer relationship, no cafeteria etc etc. All you do at office is non-stop work. I knew that 10 hours of mandatory presence in office was required, but in reality it was even more than that. 915am-8pm.

Moreover, i was put into a project in a tool which I was totally new to. They never taught me how to work on it but expected me to meet deadlines. Even after explaining my situation, they just wanted me to finish my work. There was even spying by the people who gave tea, coffee etc to make sure we were not spending time on facebook and other sites. Finally, I submitted my resignation in Jan 2011, and obviously, they said they cannot guarantee its approval. Felt they were fine if i wanted to leave. And I did so with their consent, by mid Jan.

Now I'm at home, without a job. Have applied for many technical jobs at PSUs like those at NTPC. Hoping to perform well in the tests. But the level of competition and number of vacancies do not match. Wondering what to do..

Btw, I had got 99 percentile in CAT 2010 with calls from IIM rohtak, trichy and raipur. Did not attend the interview as i felt joining these colleges (if i got the final admit) just because of the current situation would be the worst thing i could do to myself. I firmly believe that i can do better next year..

Is there any advice you could give me? I would greatly appreciate ur help. Thanks.

Since you have got a great score in CAT, you should work on it and for the subsequent interviews.

First, at least attend these interviews to get a real time experience at the least. Then, try to talk with the people / manager at your first company about joining there. From your post, it seems you have had a nice experience there. If it does not materialise, then you will have to search for a job elsewhere. It will be tough but again based on your experience, you have managed to get job easily. All this time, dont lose focus on CAT and the MBA journey.

Hi Puys,

This is my second post Help me out PLLLZZ!

I'm having 2 yrs IT work exp in a MNC and still working. I gave CAT Last year and managed just 55 percentile. Therefore I'm in a dilemma as to quit my job in july and put a full fledged CAT preps. Last year I prepared for 2 hrs on a daily basis for a month with my job on the other hand b4 CAT but it dint help me. Ofcourse I just gave 6-7 mocks b4 the actual one.

Kindly advice me on whether its a good decision to quit job b4 3 months of CAT or just keep doing the same wat I did last yr but with an ample no. of mocks as i still have 8 months.

My profile:

B.TECH : 7.6 CGPA (2008 passed out)
12th : 78% CBSE
10th : 82% CBSE

Help me out PUYS!

P.S. The nature of my job requires me to spend 10-12 hrs a day at least.

Hi Puys,

Hi,

Do not finalize on the resignation right away.

For the time being, just work on your weak areas. Take a few mocks to see if you have improved. Prepare the list of colleges you would love to join. Get some info on the percentiles required for these colleges and then decide whether you need to resign in order to achieve that percentile, and also whether it's possible to do it this season itself. The decision should always be yours.

I know this sounds vague, but with the percentile you got last year, it's a bit difficult to give a sound advice. Having said that, nowadays CAT scores need not always reflect one's ability. It can swing either way.

The general idea is that one should not resign his/ her job just for the sake of preparing for CAT and likewise tests.

Thnks bro!
The same went thru my mind as well, prepare for two months n c, if there is an improvement then concentrate wholly on CAT else I wud continue with my job and par-time CAT preps. Moreover, this season shud be my last attempt for CAT and m very keen in doin MBA from top 20 univs so its do it rite now or never. Of course, ex-MBA is possible after a year or so..

First of all, no offence meant, the companies like Deloitte, KPMG, E&Y;, PWC, Mckinsey etc recruit freshers mainly from top engineering colleges like IITs or some NITs or other top State Engineering colleges. Therefore, if you donot have a degree from a Top College, then you are sure to be not considered by those companies at the first hand. Although you can apply directly for the open positions in those companies on their respective websites but again getting an interview call is dicey. What you can do is try to get into small consulting companies which are also many in number & you can find out about them through linkedin & other job sites. Even that would be tough but not impossible. Else you carry on with your work in a core company in which you get a job during campussing or are currently working in. But you may build your profile by tweaking your resume according the nature of work required in consulting companies & also adding some valueable certifications like CFA, FRM, PMP, PRM, Six Sigma etc & if you get an interview call then its all in your hands to justify the shift from industry. If this also doesn't work out then the last probable option is to go for an MBA for which you definitely can get a lot of info here on PG.
Just enjoy what you are doing without getting desparate. You will definitely get opportunity at an opportune time if you are clear & focussed on your goal.
I hope my little gyan was of some help:cheers:.

At present pursuing engineering in electrical discipline 2nd year. Will shift my career as a manager in near future so i want to know is there any good course for me which will update my profile and give me an edge over others but the course should be through correspondence. Thanks for help in advance.

Hi
I am a B.Pharm graduate from BITS Pilani. I need some advice! I am looking to work for an year before doing my MBA. I have been placed in 2 companies on campus and am not sure which to go for.
1. Capgemini as sr. software engg. The job will prob not be too hectic as it is a huge company and a mass recruiter. But work will involve coding/developement, which I am not too keen at doing, but will give me time to prepare for mba. Also will a big co. name help me in future?
2. Kony Labs in the Business Development team. The profile sounds very exciting but will involve a lot of effort and possibly travelling. The company is a relatively new one started in 2007 and is growing really fast. Will prob get less time to prepare for MBA. But supposing I do crack cat next yr--Will it be a preferred work experience for an IIM interviewer?

Keeping my profile in mind, what kind of work experience would be best suited for a. Long term goal of an MBA. b. Short term goal of cracking interview at a b school.?

Please do help me out!
Thanks! 😃

Hi

Hi,

With regard to cracking a B school interview, it's 'you' that matters the most and not your profile. Having a good profile will give you an edge. That's all. The job at Kony labs sounds good in that aspect. Also, you will have a lot to explain about ur experience in that job.

With regard to the long term goal of MBA, do you mean the case in which you manage to crack CAT only 2-3 years from now? It's not much different from what I said before. What matters most is your temperament which you show by exhibiting in-depth knowledge and interest in your profession. But if you want to switch domain, like aspiring to switch to finance after working 3-4 years in IT, then it might be dicey as finance companies give less preference to people with such background. You might want to get solid info from B-schoolers on this.

thnx for ur fantastic reply, i am not from IIT's or NIT's but my college is best in my state(Haryana), i had posted my resume in Eval and also got a call from dere.

1. i wanted to know how can i shift my job from accenture (campus offer) to these cos?

2. i am interested in MBA but will exp in these cos will add as an advantage in b-school PI, and after that in post MBA placements?

3. what skills are required for these cos, like i got 90% in cat wid 97-LDI, VA-67, QA-77 (with very less prep actually), but working hard for CAT 11. but i have not a very good grasp on my Mechanical field (61%), IT-is good
can u suggest is mechanical filed also important or IT and apti will suffice.

thanx in advance
really looking forward to ur reply
