Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

hey guys help me.
I am a final year graduate of B.Tech computers. but i dont want to pursue my career as a techie and i cannot write codes at all.
i prepared for MBA this year . got few calls. but will not be able to convert them.
i have landed up in a job of a analyst in a small company with staff of just 12-15 people with a CTC of 2.2-2.5 lac PA .
my career goal is to do MBA in finance from top 50 colleges acc to pagalguy rankings.
now my query is
1.) shall i get into the job and prepare for MBA simultaneously as the job will be very demanding . and will the less package and small company hamper my future prospects?
2.) or i drop a year and prepare for MBA?
my dreams are not that high . i just aspire of top 50 colleges.
HELP AND SUGGESTIONS WILL BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED
P.S- cat 2010- 83.XX

Whatever you do, Do Not drop a year for MBA preparation. Not only will you not be able to prepare very well...sitting idle at home for a full year can wreak havoc on your mind and most importantly you would be hard put to explain the one year gap when you sit for B-School and company interviews later on.

First of all, don't let these failures get to you. You have real good calls and your profile is good too. Analyse your PIs question by question, you will get some clues as to where you could improve. Mentally prepare answers and see for yourself do they sound convincing. This process is tough but could be very fruitful.

Hi Puys,

I am currently pursuing an MBA (MMS) degree and have to choose my specialization within a week's time. I am quite confused between finance and marketing. My inclination is towards Marketing since the idea of Branding, Product development, Market research etc. excites me a lot and Balancesheets, P/L accounts etc dont.

However, I am a person who would not enjoy a job which involves too much of moving about from one place to another. And my perception of marketing is that it involves just that, because I feel that Marketing involves a lot of sales and that is something I would not be very much interested in doing. I don't feel that I will be bad at sales, but its just that I don't enjoy too much of traveling and moving about. So I may probably enjoy a job profile which requires me to visit the field once in a while, but which majorly involves working from the office. Hence I am confused about whether I should go for Marketing or not.

So requesting people who have a knowledge (and experience) of the various job profiles in marketing to please guide me on whether I should go for Marketing, and which profiles would suit me based on what I have stated above. Would also be thankful if someone can describe the various profiles available in mktg.

Kindly suggest ASAP, since I need to take a decision within a week. Thanks in advance.

People, waiting for your advise on the above matter... :lookround:

You said you are a final year student....which means this would be your first job.Having a small package and working in a small company is always better than having never had worked in a company and never have had any package at all.
Since you've done a B.tech it's always a good idea to get about 18 months of workex under your belt and then think about an MBA.Even if it is a small company...it will only improve your future prospects. Moreover getting a couple of years of workex gives you a very good feel of the corporate environment...it changes the way you look at your career and your priorities...

But at the end of the day it's your call..listen to advice but do only what you feel is the right thing.

Hi Puys/Seniors,

Please help me out. I am putting my current scenario below in points alongwith the dilemma i am facing

1. B.E. (CSE, 2009 passout) - 67 %
2. 10th - 83.xx % , 12th - 82.xx %
3. Working as IT Security Consultant (MNC) ; Exp - 18 Months till date

Dilemma : Joined company in July 2009.. was in no mood to write CAT 2009 (and did'nt write it finally)a s i had to concentrate on Job... although i didn't put in any extra efforts. but yeah i was sincere.. got promoted twice so far... but not substantial progress in terms of package.. getting avg. package.. Came Jan 2010.. joined TIME Delhi .. and since my focus was totally on CAT (my first attempt).. i didn't focus much on my job.. (viz . did no technical certification for further growth)... and results are

CAT'10 -

OA - 75.xx %ile , VA - 95.xx , QA- 75.xx & DI - 17.xx (attempted only 6 Q's due to time mismanagement)

XAT - OA - 90 %ile , VA - 93.xx , QA - 75.xx , DI/LR - 73.xx (missed sectional & OA cut-off by 1.xx %ile)

FMS - Missed cut-off by miles
IIFT - got 27 marks

Now.. family wants me to change job as the company isn't paying handsome amount...but i want to continue in this company (as workload is not much & i get ample time to prepare + good profile)and give CAT '11 and other B-schools exams one more chance.. want to take admission in top 10 B-schools only.. didn't even write SNAP , NMAT last yr.. not filled NITIE, MDI forms.. However.. as i know myself.. as i'll go for CAT'11 (i confess that i had not given my 100 % last yr)... i would ignore my job once again.. no certifications.. no job related training ..wud do nothin.. but then i do not want to be left bewildered like now by the end of this yr again... with no calls and no apraisal @ Job...please suggest me somthing good...

i suggest u to change to other company and do 4 cat y because getting into iim is not best assured even though u do well some times and if u neglect ur job 4 1 more year it will be difficult 4 u in career ladder

Hello,

I am software engineering, currently working in MNC. My total work exp so far is 3.8 yrs.
This year, through SNAP, I got admit in SCIT. But I am not very sure whether to take it or not. Some points I consider are

1. Good faculty. SCIT has descent
2. Good peer group
3. I want to remain in IT industry. So looking for IT related specialization only.
4. Placement and internship opps. Currently my salary is above the avg salary of SCIT.

So i am not able to take final decision.Other alternative could be to give my best shot for CAT next time.(Just missed CAT and JMET). However, it has obvious risk.

So i am in dilemma, whether to get enrolled or pursue exam one more time.

Any help in this ?

P.S: I am free for CAT 2011 and have no other responsibility.

You should not join SCIT with your current salary and experience. Ask yourself : Are you worth only for SCIT???
hi everyone,
with the risk of being seasoned, since i couldnt find anything to throw some light on my doubts, i humbly post this to seek your informative suggestions.

i will be graduating with a BE degree in may this year, but i have a strong inclination to persue a management related course to do with media and entertainment. i have been involved with performing arts at school and college level, sung for a feature film and im 21 years old.

the only option in india i could garner was mica, in ahmedabad with their management program ,but from what iv heard from some of my friends studying there, it doesnt seem to drive me.

are you guys aware of any courses globally being offered at a managerial level in the area of media/entertainment.
my final aim is to get involved with my passion for performing arts at a later stage of my carrer.

your help is much appreciated.
thanks

lovely friend of mine, pursue is the spelling not persue i think mica is good option there are many good schools which do have this course but they are not in india so you need to give gmat for that, when we have god like google you can clear your doubt.

dont just join an institute simply for mba..take an informed decision

hey i have poor acads
10th- 80
12th- 70
b.tech(mech)- 61%

1. can i know some good colleges which take work ex into account. (only top20)
2. will it be usefull to work for 2-3 years before an MBA from India. do dey really consider the work-ex to that extent?
thnx.

In my opinion i think that every institute give priority to work exp and it depends on you which u want to go for? Mba or work? But plz do take admission if you get into top notch without work ex it is best.

Hi Puys,

I'm having 2 yrs IT work exp in a MNC and still working. Last year I gave CAT and managed just 55 percentile. Therefore I'm in a dilemma as to quit my job in july and put a full fledged CAT preps. Last year I prepared for 2 hrs on a daily basis for a month with my job on the other hand b4 CAT but it dint help me. Ofcourse I just gave 6-7 mocks b4 the actual one.

Kindly advice me on whether its a good decision to quit job b4 3 months of CAT or just keep doing the same wat I did last yr but with an ample no. of mocks as i still have 8 months.

My profile:

B.TECH : 7.6 CGPA (2008 passed out)
12th : 78% CBSE
10th : 82% CBSE

Help me out PUYS!

P.S. The nature of my job requires me to spend 10-12 hrs a day at least.

What kind of an internship would help me in a B-School entrance interview?
I'm doing engineering. I've already done a technical one and was planning for a non-tech this time.

I have some contacts in Nestle, KPMG, McKinsey etc..please reply!
