hey guys I'm Puneet, setting targets for the year ahead. I have a blueprint ready and would like people who have been in situation that i'm jst gonna xplain, people studying in b-schools/working post MBA to pls present their opinions/thoughts (I call this reality check exercise!!:listen)- would love to hear ur opinions-->
So here's the situation
1. Work ex-Will have 5 years experience in the oil and gas(mech. engineer) sector by Sep'11.
2. Objective-MBA with an aim to get into business consulting/strategy(as of now atleast.)
3. CAT/GMAT- CAT 2010-88% GMAT-690.
4. Options
a) Use the GMAT score that i have and apply to b-schools abroad in the
round2/3 deadlines.this year.......
b) Take GMAT once again(cz i have not performed to my potential and apply to select colleges for 2012 batch)/ CAT 2011 (To try for ABC).
My opinion
1. When good B-schools are there in India that can offer me good quality education and assure good placements, at an investment almost 25% of most of good foreign schools, and wd just require me to work hard to make it into the schools then why go abroad????
2. From what little i have found out, rocking CAT percentile would make it easy to get into top indian schools, in the sense that having 5.5 years of experience till the results are out next year would not be an impediment to get admission.
3. I'll keep GMAT (B-school abroad)as a backup to indian colleges and till that time take another crack at gmat to get my potential score.
4. I'm not too old yet....i'll be sweet 26 in june...so i can give my self one more year to have a serious shot at CAT and then move to foreign soil as a back up next year ..........
This is what I've been able to make of my situation, would love to get a reality check .........eagerly awaiting ur response......
thanks

Your experience is in a core sector which is well appreciated by the consulting / strategy companies. Frankly, speaking the amount of work experience is on the higher side if we consider the indian MBA colleges. I personally think you trying for GMAT and then studying abroad makes more sense as it would open more opportunites for you.

Hello,
Currently I am working in one of the world's largest s/w development company in its Pune based center. I am 2007 BE passout. I am thinking whether I should appear for 2011 CAT and other exams like XAT, JMET etc.
If everything goes well, I would have 5 years of exp. How would you rate this decision? Does 5 yrs exp be an impediment while taking admission?
For cost reason, MBA abroad is not a choice I am considering.Post MBA i want to remain in IT field. So I could leverage 5 yrs exp then. Any take on this?
A very brief profile of mine:
- 10+ years in the IT industry
- Significant time spent in the US both as a supplier representative for 4 years (Onsite Manager in common IT parlance, if you will) and as a Full time IT Project Manager for 3 years with a well-renowned Investment Management firm, all in New York
- Back to India for good for the last 2 years and working currently as a Program Manager for a leading listed India IT firm
My passion is stocks and the stock market. So what formal/street knowledge do I have? I have been trading and investing as well for the last 10 years and my returns have beat the market primarily due to ESOPs, not that I am a great stock picker already. Barring those ESOPs I have underperformed the market.
With a view of becoming a fulltime market professional I have seriously considered obtaining the CFA charter. I have passed my L1 in Dec 2010 and confident of passing L3 by Jun 2012. It is not that just because I pass the exams some firm will hire me as a Portfolio Manager and entrust crores of money to be handled. Here is where my dilemma begins:
Am I too late to begin a career switch after 10+ years of experience in a field? So do I begin all over again like a greenhorn in Finance?
What kind of jobs are available if I complete my CFA and have no investment management experience? Can I attempt something with my having CFA Level 1 exam right now?
What recommendations puys have in this regard as an overall career strategy?
Constraints:
- I will need to maintain at least my current level of Salary, if not more, because of the commitments I have :-(
- I cannot take a break to do a 1-year MBA
Puys I need your help , following is my situation:
1.Academic: Xth:73% , XIIth:55% ,BE:60%
2.Age: 27years
3.Currently working in ITES (Banking sector)pay 4.5L
4.Previus CAT attemps have been dismal, to say the least. My best has been 72 , that was 2 years back!
5.I have just 1 weak point, Quant! Well I am confident of overcoming the same after serious efforts, which will be decided after your suggestions.
6.My main purpose to get an MBA is to get a better job profile and more pay.
Issue:
1.Where do I stand in the management admission competition considering my credentials(Low marks and all)? Is it a show stopper
2.Is my age and marks(,which will be 29 something by the time I finish my MBA,a negative factor for placements?
3.Right now I am thinking about GMAT, basically colleges which offer 1 year full time courses. A road-map suggestion in this regards will be appreciated.
please suggest and help a fellow puy who is in real confusing state of mind

1. Low marks may create problems in admissions, but more important is your low xii marks which are less than 60. They can affect in placements.
2. You can become strong in quant in couple of months which is not true with verbal
3. GMAT will be the best option for you considering Indian mind-set which grill more on marks...
All the Best

@rgblogs thanks for your reply.
I request some specific details on the XII marks and the age issue.
Isnt' true that I somehow compensate the marks issue with my current job experience?
Hi,friend I m very much interested to do my MBA frm top b-school in india or abroad. But i am in confusion that what type of experience they require. I will give my final year graduation exam this april but in our clg. No campus placement and i m doing b.Com frm small city so getting job in big firm after graduation is reduced. So i am thinking about to give Bank Probationary Officer exam and take a job in bank but i am not sure that for MBA. Is the Officer work experience will helpful and when i apply for mba they will accept my experiece? Thnx. My profile is
std 10th:78%
12th:76%
graduation;
1st year: 43%
2nd year: 55%
3 rd year expecting around 70%
and in extra activity
i m state level cricket player and played national school games nce and i play domestic and university tournaments regular. Is this benefit me?Plz help me.
Low marks in school or college will always affect admission to any top B-school.
However, i would say, instead of sitting and thinking of how it will affect you, simply start your prep and give CAT/GMAT, see your scores and then start worrying abt it.

Well low scores would definitely affect you. However, because you are a B Com guy, you might be a bit luckier than me. I am an engineer and none of the B Schools like engineers these days but they cant help it. Half of the b schools in India are filled with engineers.....
The fact that you're a state level player will help you only during the interview stages. Won't help you much i guess for getting the calls. Different B Schools have different selection procedures though..and they keep changing it every year. So, nothing can be predicted.
I scored 76,74,72 in x, xii and grad... and 99.4 in CAT.. and ended up with only one IIM call 😞 😞 ... and I got calls from all other B Schools who didnt look at past academic records..
hello puys...
i need a small favour...
followin is my profile...
1. x-92% , xii-61% , b.tech-continuin(ii b passin dis yr '11 with cgpa sum around 7.0)...
2.age-23 yrs..
yes...i do want 2 hav an MBA 4m top clgs of india or abroad....wrote CAT'10...BUT dat was not worth of mentionin....right now i've a IT job offer in my hand....
cosiderin mine(low marks in xiith)profile,i was wonderin if i can b able 2 get gd/pi calls 4m best rankin b-scools aftr scorin say 95% or above in cat'11(i think i can beat out upto dis givin my best shot) or sud i go 4 joinin my job(with an assay 2 improve my profile).....
does work-ex 'll really contribute sumthin 4 d betterment of my profile?????
i seriously dream bout persuin my MBA 4m sum top clgs....
I guess you will be passing out around May. I would advice you to prepare seriously for CAT along with the job which you got. If you manage to get into any of the B Schools of your choice, then go ahead and do your MBA. If you fail to make it, then continue with the job and try harder next time.
As far as getting calls is concerned, every b school has its own criteria of selection. They give weightage accordingly. Your poor score in xii should get compensated with a great score in x.
And anyway.... the best chance you have is to prepare for CAT. You cannot prepare for xii again.
So rather channelize your energy in doing well in CAT.... 😃
Thnks subash.....
I have 1 que. Now i am also thinking about to write any bank Po exam in may or june. The po experience is count in good b-school experience criteria or working in a company only count?Thnx

Hi,
You will get all the preferred institutes (TIME / IMS AND Career Launcer) in Pune. You can go for any of them.
Personally, I would prefer TIME or CL over IMS.
