Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

my 1st post on puy, please excuse if this sort of a story has been posted before. for me, this is how my life has been for the past 5 years now.

So I wanted to be a commercial pilot, but due to lack of finances i chose to go for aircraft maintenance engineering . thought i'd do it by myself once i get there as a senior flight engineer. that never happened, not remotely close. although I did well there, played smart, got an intern at pawan hans helicopters and followed the rules that brought down my chances of clearing license on jet engines consecutively for 3 times in 2010. dgca had lost it, whole delhi had failed in oct attempt. anyhow,i'd enrolled for graduation in 2009 through DU correspondence ( yes i woke up late that a graduation is must and a license like a CPL or aviation engineering license won't help me escalate my level) .after failing those dgca exams and scoring some 55% in 1st year i decided to migrate. which wasn't easy even though i had cleared the cut off for 2nd year migration to regular college. anyhow, so i went ahead, fought for two months, fought with every person who denied help and rules. but after seeing how aviation was badly hit, and how my luck wasn't favouring me, i became all the more firm on getting a migration just to be at par with regular grads (i'd read on a thread somewhere how the interviewers for MBA admissions look at correspondence degree holders like deterred class). also my subject was BA programme in english literature and economics, I knew I needed this migration to just come out as a regular grad. and all of this was my last shot, time was passing , i passed out from 10+2 in 2006, did 3years of license course by 2009, woke up to the importance of a graduation degree by 2009 and enrolled in SOL DU. failed one year consistently in license exams but cleared 1st year grad only for the purpose of migrating to regular DU college. all this, cause i had flushed away time without knowing how it would pull me back. so now i'm in 2nd year finals , doing BA programme in a regular DU college. I've been a decent student in academics and I do have the aptitude and creativity to pull off MBA exams etc. alas, i'd opened my eyes to wider horizons and things that beneath all the show and i,now, am an MBA aspirant. But I still worry, am i up to the standards?! and what would it take to enhance these chances in fail safe methods.

comments and suggestions are welcomed!

cheers.

"Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it" 😃 😃

Nice effort , but dont you think this will be a BIG task. I believe that the search facilty is pretty decent. Else if any one wants better search they can always use Google or Yahoo to search Pagalguy.com .

I guess PG.com can have more sections where all these help me type topics can be posted, like how the career section has been started.

puys i couldn't find the right(and active) thread for this question so posting it here.
can anybody tell me the ma economics entrance syllabus or pattern for mumbai university?also is it worth pursuing ma economics in distance mode provided that one has a regular mba degree?

hello dear puys

Here is one very important thing I want to ask u guys...I am a 2010 B.tech passout.Got into accenture thru campus placements.Workd 2 months in Mumbai(my hometown is delhi),then quit it.Gave CAT 2nd time.secured more than pathetic percentile(Gave FMS too.No other exam. Now jobless.Do not want to work in engineering field.
Want to do MBA from best school. What should I do?Should I go for preparing MBA again, and find a job in delhi in any xyz company or grab any oppurtunity that i get in an MNC again(e.g. L&T; etc.) and move out of delhi.
I am quite confused...All I want in 7-8 yrs down the lane,is to open my restaurant.I require capital and knowledge for that.A good MBA would provide both.
I have allready rejected two jobs from MNC's .And now I am not sure whether I did right...Will my staying in delhi and preparing for MBA'11 with work exp from a small company or little work ex or no work ex would get me into a college incase I secure a v gud percentile???Or should I grab another MNC job that comes my way?
I request some puy souls to help me find the clarity!

Thanks 4 readin!:drinking:

Dear ceoruchika...the situation you are in is not something unique to you:. Many have undergone such crisis (including me) & many still undergoing. There's no quickfix solution to this:lookround:. I will tell you my experience. I am a mechanical engineer. I too had an excellent job offer from CTS. Attended a foundation training for 1 month. During the foundation training, I realized that coding doesnt interest me at all. I did not want to be a software engineer. So I tried simultaneously to get into a core mechanical industry. The foundation training in Noida got over & was told to report at Pune Office after exactly 6 weeks. So I had 6 weeks to explore. I luckily got an offer in Noida in an Excellent manufacturing MNC. I still thank God for the opportunity. Suddenly after 3 months of joining I started losing interest in that job as well. I thought I am made for an MBA. I gave CAT but flunked. I too soon developed a dream of setting up a Restaurant like you. But all this while I stuck with my job despite having least interest. I again gave CAT with whatever little prep I could manage. Got 93.92. Didnt apply anywhere as I thought I am capable of getting 99. So again gave CAT & got almost same score & again didnt apply anywhere. Didnt give up the job though. Gave CAT again last year. Got 90 this time. I have now changed jobs now & still haven't given hope of doing MBA. But I have gained tremendous amount of wisdom in the last 3 years of my work-ex. With a Job-in-hand I have a certain self-confidence. CAT is unpredictable. Even with top-notch preparation you are not guranteed a 99%ile.
So I would suggest you to grab any good offer that comes your way. Even if you have little or no interest in working now, you will learn to survive tough situations. Dropping is the easiest thing in the world but getting 99 isn't my friend. You need to have a strong will to crack the CAT. If you feel being at home will help you in preparing well, then look for a job in Delhi, there's no issue with it at all. Its true that In India, Work-ex is not given too much importance, you would get into a good college based on a high %ile but for your own betterment & self-confidence, I would suggest you to take up a job. So don't get disheartened.
And lets hope we both someday run our restaurants succesfully.:cheerio:

Hey rockinmukul...man you have a family business. Just grab this opprtunity at the earliest to gain experience. Even if it will not help you in getting selected in a good MBA College (As colleges consider only the %ile for shortlisting for interviews), the experience will help you gain a psychological edge over the freshers when you, eventually, do join an MBA college. Any gap during education or after education should explained well during the interviews if asked. You have the cushion to tell that you had joined your family business. So try hard in this year's CAT & get some exposure in the meantime in your family business:cheerio:.

hey thanks 4 d reply..yeah dats wat i think,to take up the job now and rectify my attitude towards job!lol..

Hi,

Myself Abhijeet. Currently i am an asst.manager with Genpact kolkata. I am a commerce grad with an MBA from ICFAI Business School ( regular). I have 9 years exp ( pre MBA 4 and post MBA 5) exclusively in Reconciliations domain (in F&A; domain). I was contacted by Cognizant ( formerly UBS) for Reconciliations TEAM MANAGER role ( prospective client credit suisse) . My current CTC (fixed) is very low ( Just 5 lacs p.a).

My interview is very near. HOW MUCH SHOULD I ASK AS SALARY....I WILL VE VERY MUCH OBLIGED TO ANYONE WHO HELPS ME.

Thanks,
Abhijeet

My dilemma is... that i have got a few calls..... i know i want to do an MBA & i know why i want to do it......
My ultimate objective is to be a part of decision making & leadership of my organisation..... I know that even without an MBA i could do this, but that wont be before another, 10-12 yrs... but with an MBA it might take half the time !!
So time is one factor, the other factor is, the entire experience of doing an MBA !!
Y I dont want to learn only through wrk ex is because i would rather invest 2yrs in learning about various aspects of general management & enhancing my analytical skills, with peers from different backgrounds, i think it really sets ur brain thinking !! coz a job is much more focused to 1 or 2 particular feilds.....

But whn im asked what i see myself doing 10 yrs from nw....im stumped!!

If you say something specific they'll say thats too specific.... if you make it a lil broader, they say thats too ambiguous!!
Seriously what do they want me to say ?? :drinking:

I want to wrk in a marketing firm, be a part of the top management, coz what intrests me the most is how dynamic the concept of marketing is, ever changing & not same for any 2 different commodities & like i had mentioned earlier i would want to be a part of the the decision makers of that firm !! :lookround:

but i know... with this answer.... pat comes are reply...... "u dont know y u want to do an MBA"

WELL I DONT KNOW WHAT DO YOU WANT TO HEAR !! :banghead:

im really frustrated right now...... please help me....

P.S. : be critical but plz dont be too mean..... the mock interview panel has already done that pretty well

Hello Puys,
I could really use your help at the moment. I graduated in Mechanical Engineering in May-June 2010. And right now I work in this company called Mohsin Haider Darwish in Oman. They're a large scale trading company in the GCC (Gulf Sector) and deal with a lot of products like Luxury automotives (Jaguar, Range Rover), commerical vehicles (Volvo, Ashok Leyland), Engineering equipment, Building materials, Tyres and batteries, Gases chemicals and medical equipments, Computers, Electronics, and some Infotech. I was offered a position of a management trainee in this company during November and I accepted immediately as I got the offer. What they offered to me was that I would be trained for 3 months and then I would be rotated through the various divisions and then finally placed in one division according to where they needed me. Initially thought that this would be really valuable exposure as this company deals with a lot of different products in their various divisions and the pay was pretty good too. But now i'm beginning to get worried. At the end of the day this was just a massive trading company. They do no manufacturing here. They import they're goods directly from europe and sell it over here. They are the only representatives for some of the brands they franchise in entire oman so they also deal with sales, marketing, installation, aftersales and parts. And most of the departments i'll be rotated through i'll have to deal with the sales aspect of the product. How good is sales experience for a student looking forward to doing his Mba. Now I wouldnt be worried if I was in the sales division of the parent company persay like say Ashok Leyland or Volvo. But these guys are just resellers. Doesnt that make them like a dealership ? and does such sales experience add to my resume ? I was initially planning to work here for a year before I could write my CFA and NCFM modules to break into the Finance market. Now i'm really worried if i'm wasting my time over here. What do i do ?? Any insight from you experienced and knowledgable guys could really really help me out here. Thanks in advance.

Really sorry for the repost/bump guys but i could really really use the help >.>. Getting mindfucked here

puys... need some help.. currently i am pursuing bachelors of business economics.. i am totally confused where my interests lies, and what profile am i suited for... here's my profile.. kindly have a look..

maths is my childhood love, and i enjoy economics is well.. theory subjects is something that i have never enjoyed. studied accounts only in class 11 and 12, but enjoyed it. i have taken up finance as a specialization in my final year, but couldnt devote much time to it as i was busy with CAT prep. so no idea how i fare up in finance. on the personal front, i love competition. also, i am a monomaniac, and whatever interests me, i am 24*7 into it... appeared for various mba entrance exams this year.. as of now, i have IIM S, SIBM, SCMHRD, NMIMS(expected..240),MFC and MBE calls..

i'd come across the term investment banking around a year ago. since then, i'v developed a liking for the lifestyle of an investment banker.. high salary and the ultra professional life is something that i'v been craving for ever since.
now the prob is that i am unsure whether it is just my obsession or am i really suitable for this job. what is your say on this??? shall i go approach a career counselor???
guys i wish to take an informed decision. kindly pour in your suggestions..
