Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Dear Friends,
I am Murthy. I am a Mechanical Engineer with 8 years of work experience in assessing the automobile materials hazardous compliance. My field is very narrow and esp. in India it has got very limited opportunities. I would like to switch over my career to Finance by doing MBA. I am preparing for GMAT. Some of my friends told that, switching career after 8 years is difficult even if one does MBA. Is it correct? Does MBA not open gates for shifting of my career? Please advice.

Many thanks in advance.
Best Regards
Murthy
Thank you Vinay.Could you also throw some light on how the career will be as an IT Consultant, and also what does it mean by General Management what kind of role do they play in the organisation.
Thanks once again in advance

From the limited information I have, IT consultantcy will involve understanding the IT needs in various sectors, accordingly liasoning with the development teams to prepare solutions for that type of needs, and maybe also pitching to clients to sell those solutions.

General management by definition will involve work across finance, strategy, operations, marketing domains.

Hello and Welcome to PG.

Please throw some light on why you want to do MBA in finance. Hope you have done your research before coming to this decision. I hope you are aware you'll be treated as a fresher by the recruiters despite your experience. I wouldn't say getting into finance is not possible, but you'll have to try real hard, especially through the GMAT route.

If you are not adamant about finance then there are other options that can allow you to leverage your experience in this sector. The first thing that comes to my mind is getting an MBA in sustainability or allied fields (The so called Green MBA). As you're following the GMAT route, I'd request you to research out such courses and get in touch with the admission committee/students at the schools offering such specialization.

Coming to India, there is a program at NITIE called Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Safety and Environmental Management (The Course) and another at TERI (M.B.A. in Business Sustainability ? TERI University ) which you might be interested in. My advice will be to get in touch with someone taking these courses to know about the real prospects.

And Finally, If I were you, I'd have a nice chat with my HR about my career/growth prospects and ask if the company is willing to sponsor my MBA.

ATB.

Hi ATB,

Thanks for your response. My basic objective is to expand my career opportunities, while I am not so keen at Finance. I do understand that I will be behind the other finance grads after completeing MBA in finance. What if I opt for MBA in general management which is applicable for any industry. Will that be a good way? Were there any proven examples who have utilized thier MBA degrees for expanding thier opportunities from a narrow field? Also, can you please send some information on Green MBAs, were they successfully thru in some companies after the Green MBA..

Thanks
Murthy

hi all,

our TIME Mocks r going to begin in feb...

can anyone tell me what strategies i can apply in Mocks?
nd how to best analyse the paper?

TIPS
1. Do not miss any MocK Exam
2. Analyze each MocK Exam
3. Find your strengths and weakness
4. Make strengths as sitters or your scoring areas
5. Improve your weakness

Identify weak areas where improvement is not possible. Leave them straight away in the exams as selection of right questions matters a lot!

STRATEGIES
Strategy depends on your capabilities. You can experiment in couple of initial mocks which section to attempt first and which to last.
Generally RC, LR, DI should not be attempted last.

thnx dear...

and how should i analyse a mock?

For each question...

If correct - Is there any alternate way to do it quickly?

If incorrect - why?? wrong ques selection/silly mistake/conceptual problem/or other

If not attempted - again why not??

And remember stay away from any guesses strictly otherwise cat or any other exam will stay away from you:cheerio:

Ok...Vishal,You looks too confused regarding doing your MBA.
I would advice you to first introspect whether an MBA degree is required at this stage or not, and if "yes",how exactly that could add to your profile and make a better career for you.See,don't do MBA just for the sake of doing it.
I know you would feel that I'm giving extra gyaan over here and trying to preach you.But mate one thing which finally counts is that you just can't excel in anything if your heart and mind is not in that.
Now coming back to what type of MBA would suit you??
Well...I believe full time MBA:thumbsup::thumbsup: is always better than part-time.See during MBA,A lot of learning happens outside the class along with the peer group and friends. You would also feel more competitive and compassionate during a full-time MBA course. So,would advice you to prepare well for the next year's CAT/XAT or any other good MBA exam and perform your best in that!!

Hello guys, I am in a sort of dilemma. Here goes my story:

I am an engineering student and would graduate in JUNE 2011. I gave Cat 10 in 3rd year of my college.

Unfortunately for me I could not score well. My dilemma is if I do not accpet any job offers during the campus placement and sit at home for CAT 11 wether it will be regarded as a "DROP" by the PI panelists?

Would my sitting home for next CAT exam put a negative impact on my profile?

My academic details are:

10th:65%
12th:70%
B.E : 65%

WORK EX : NONE

Thanks in advance

I would suggest you to look for a job and continue with your CAT preparation...don't fully rely on CAT...it has become very very unpredictable after becoming Computer Based....

hi Piyush,

since u will graduate in 2011,it wont be much of an issue in PIs,that uv not done a job till next year...

but since ur acads r not so good, having a substantial work ex of 1 yr cud add a lot to ur profile...

nd hey its not difficult to prepare along with job...
c even if u have a 10 hour job and take away 2 hours for travel
uv still got 12 hours to sleep and study...

thats a lot of time to prepare well...

have a work ex if possible.

Gurdeesh

Hi Gurdeesh and preetam, thanks for your prompt reply. I think that is a very generous advise, I would try and take up a job in telecalling or something like that. I hope they acknowledge this work as experience.

BTW would they consider the work ex even if it is some months and not a full year? I mean what if I take up a job after giving CAT 11 a shot? This way I would end up with a couple of months work ex. What do u say

It will not be a problem in Pis, but many people land up in big trouble when they fail in CAT/related exams with no job in hand or they left job for the sake of cat.

It is not that this happens because of lack of preparation. MBA Admission Tests are very unpredictable and too risky.

On the other hand, engineering admission tests are very different.

If you feel dropping is required or dont feel like doing a job, then prepare a backup plan in advance in case..........and then start preparations in full swing.

try finding something else...experience of telecalling wont be considered...
but this kind of job..i mean telecalling might help u open up and might help improve ur spoken English...

but my advice to u wud be to not do a call centre\telecalling job if thats the only job u can do...u shud drop a yr then...

thr r so many other jobs besides telecalling...y not do them...

i think woking as a high profile salesman might earn u a marketing work ex too..nd these kinds of jobs r not difficult to find...if u can find any other job that is...
