Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

hello guys

I am third year passed student in engg from pune university. I was not a good student therefore I had given up 1 year back due to constantly failing in most of my papers and pressure from my family members for not working hard enough. Currently I am pursuing B.com from distance learning and working in my uncle's textile business but after a lot of thought I am planning to quit my job and B.com studies to come back and complete my engg degree. I am very determined to complete it this time and perform well.

My friend (member here at PG) told me clear my doubts here regarding whether I would be eligible for CAT/Maharashta CET/XAT and other exams as I want to pursue an MBA degree. Currently I have an aggregate of 49.2% in 6 sems but I will surely jack this above 50% when I complete my degree. So will any of the exams allow me to sit with a slightly less percentage? Also will any good B school allow me to admission to a someone with a poor profile like me (will be completing engg in 7 years 😞 ) even if I score well.

Awaiting all your replies

with less than 50%, you are eligible for XAT, IIFT and TISS exam.. under XAT, both XLRI and XIMB have eligibily criteria as only pass class in graduation.. so currently you can apply to these colleges as n when the forms for next year are out..also, do put in your best efforts to get to that 50% mark as it would make you eligible for a whole range of other B-schools..
also, do not worry about your profile right now and give your best shot at the entrance examinations.. rest assured they will give you a chance to defend yourself in the interviews, so think about the rest when you get to that stage.. cheers and ATB!!
i can relate to you as i have been in pretty much the same situation..!!
you can pm me for specific queries.. remember, do not give up!!

Thank you all for the replies, it seems there is still some hope for me and I plan to grow on this. I need a little above 53% in DEC 11 exams of my university to push my aggregate above 50%, I will surely get this.

I went through respective sites of all the Major exams of Indian B-schools and as you all have mentioned I can sit for IIFT and XAT surely. Regarding CET the site is not very informative therefore I was not able to find much information whether I would be eligible for it or not, but seeing as the exam for it will be held in Feb 2012 till then I will already have received my 7th sem marks and hopefully crossed the 50% barrier. I am heavily relying on CET to get a decent college. I'm targeting PUMBA as I will be home university candidate here.

Also I read this on CAT's site and I'm a little confused regarding this

Candidates appearing for the final year of bachelors degree/equivalent qualification examination and those who have completed degree requirements and are awaiting results can also apply. IIMs may verify eligibility at various stages of the selection process, the details of which are provided at Selection Process of IIMs.

upon proceeding further in Selection Process of IIM's

If short-listed for interview, candidates appearing for the final bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification examination must show an original certificate from the Principal/Registrar/Director of the university/institution certifying that the candidate has obtained 50% marks or equivalent (45% in case of the candidates belonging to SC, ST, and DA category) based on latest available grades/marks. He/she must submit an attested copy of the original certificate at the time of interview.

Now I don't want to say anything about my chances at IIM's as I dont want to look at the negative side of things, but will I be able to atleast sit for the exam and apply to top 50 colleges that subscribe to CAT score? as I'm sure when I fill the form for CAT and other colleges (around aug 2011) they will ask me for my current marks, so will I be rejected there only or do I have a chance of moving ahead?

Guys please help in guiding me a little, I am not bad at studies its just that I lost my way during college. I have 85% above marks in both 10th and 12th. I have had almost perfect marks in Maths in my school (100 in 10th 98 in 12th) I had even got through till IIT mains and secured 17k rank in AIEEE with hardly any preparation. I also have some decent extra curricular activities from school in debate and basketball. I just need to be focussed and determined and I'm sure I can do very good. I know I have committed a lot of mistakes but I'm willing to correct them all at any cost.

tell me should i prepare for cat or gmat?

First year of engineering and you are looking at preparing for GMAT/CAT? What about the College Experience? What about organizing fests, bunking classes, goofing around with friends etc? Do you want to miss out on those? It would be unfortunate if you do so...it really would be a waste of 4 precious years of your life!
My suggestion to you...as i would advise my brother who is in the first year of engineering at IIT... Look at the future at the right time and look at the present for now.
When you are in your sixth semester and looking at the future, then it would be a right time to:
Ask the right questions... CAT/GMAT/GRE etc...
AND
Get the right answers.

Also, please remove your email ID from your post, it is against PG rules!

Both are very good companies to be the part of and have their positives and negatives as well. If you want to see how an Indian company has gained so much and what it is doing to nurture itself and others is then join Infosys. Also, their training is good. More than training the training period is good.

Accenture is a MNC and also has a very good culture. So, you can join it too.

Actually, it is you who have to decide which company to join. Both are good. The question whether you will get time to study or not may vary from project to project.
Hi.

The first thing that you should ask yourself is what do you want out of an MBA and what specialization you want. If you want something related to your field that option is also available. Try doing some research before deciding on the institutes. IFMR has a finance program that is quant heavy. It might not be a good match to your profile. As far as climbing up the ladder is concerned, I believe performance is the real key and not the institute/tag.

thank you for your reply.. i agree.. climbing up the corporate ladder and being a successful businessperson requires more than just a brand name.. but isn an iim, fms or xlri enough to gives a jumpstart over the other b schools? i am reasonably good at quants but interested more in marketing and hr. do u think me not being an engg or not from a commerce or economics background be a hindrance in the future?

all the best from my side.

Then, i would suggest you start off with solving puzzles , improving your vocabulary by downloading wordlists and learning 5 new words every day and if possible, learn some Vedic mathematics!
Then, after about 6 months or so...you can look at a sample CAT paper (Many are available on the net) and you can get a first hand look at it. Ditto for GMAT!
Good Luck!

One thing I would suggest apart from preparing for CAT is to read as many books you can about business and other books authored by eminent business personalities. There will be so much free time when you are in college but many realize it only when they get time crunched when they step in to a job.

Few books which you can read to kick start your aggressive reading habit

1.The World is Flat : Thomas Friedman

2.Made in Japan : Akio Morita

You can also read Economist which has content ranging from history to business to politics . It is also the home to many passages appearing in CAT/XAT.

hey puys plz reply and give me some suggestions...

Hello puys, this is my first post in pg. :)
I appeared for cat 2010( only 73.69 %ile :banghead: ). also appeared for snap(92.25), nmat( only 194), mat(98.85 %ile ). No calls from fms and iift as well. with these scores i really don't see myself getting into a good b school(except for mat,but i am really not interested in taking admission in mat colleges). Also, i am a company secretary  (even though i have not completed my training yet,but i have passed all the levels). Now i am in a dilemma as to whether i should start working as a CS, gain some experience nd then appear for cat nd other such exams or should i give it a try again this year??? here are some details regarding my academics so far:

Class X (ICSE)- 81% (2005)
Class XII (ISC)- 89.5% (2007) :cheerio:
B.COM(Hons. in Finance)- 70.25% from Calcutta University (2010)
Company Secretaryship(ICSI)- 58.07%(Average of all three levels) (2010)

I always wanted to do an MBA but would it be advisable to waste another year just to prepare for these exams or should I work for 2 or 3 years as a CS and then think about MBA???
Puys please reply to this as i m really in need of some advice... :)

I would suggest you to pursue your dream of doing an MBA. You should start working and prepare alongwith it. It will be tough but it will pay off in many ways.

Also, I feel that you coming from a non engg. background and on top of that having done CS, you will be preferred once you clear the written tests since colleges look for diversity these days.

Hi guys,

I have an unique situation here...When I graduated from my college, I had an opinion of doing MBA after working in a reputed company for atleast two years and fortunately I was placed in a reputed IT company from my college campus.. that was in 2008. Now, the global economic recession came and I was called for joining only in 2009 which I did..After the joining and training were over, I unfortunately had to contend with many health issues and couldn't concentrate on the job. I asked my company for a month's leave which they didn't deign to give.. so eventually, I had to resign in august 2010..hardly a year since I joined.. I was flabbergasted and felt very down.. however, due to the urging and encouragement from my parents, I prepared for CAT 2010 and now I have scored a nice 98.51 percentile;but no calls yet from any colleges...Now my ex-company HR guys have contacted me for a possible offer again... Should I go to my office again or should I stick with my b-school search? Please advise...

You can join back the same company, you will get latest salary slips and you must be already having your joining documents & first salary slip. This will cover your in between gap. Keep preparing for GD/PI simultaneously as having a Job/Work-EX at time of GD/PI will help in conversion of your calls. All the Best.

Hello everyone. I am in my final year of engineering. I gave CAT 2010 and secured only 86%ile. I know its a bad score. As part of campus placements I have got a decent job. My real dilemma is I really do not know whether I want to do MBA or not. I gave CAT this year because everyone around me was giving. I also joined TIME to prepare but I just never paid attention in the class. I was never able to generate interest in English or DI. I was so sick of all the preparation that one day before CAT exam I actually thought of ditching the exam. But then I had already paid the money so I thought I should experience the CAT paper once. I want to know whether I should work for sometime and then think of giving CAT or I should start preparing for CAT 2011. The thing is without proper motivation I am not able to study properly. Follwing is my profile:
10th - 95.5
12th - 92.2
Engineering CGPA - 9.1

People say that since my profile is good clearing the CAT will increase my chances of getting an admission. Also I think that once I start working it will be difficult to study simlutaneiously. But studying without motivation and desire is also a waste of time. Guys help me out. 😃
