Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

As it is a carrer dilemma related forum, i expect my ambiguities be clarified here. I am a 2010(B.Tech) passout working as a software engineer in bhubaneswar since last seven months. Now i want to prepare well for CAT 2011. But as we know s/w engineers in private firms need to work for 10 hrs., i hardly get time to study. I now think of going for 'bank po' as it is a job of 7-8 hrs and i can get some time for studies. But i am afraid if it wud affect my profile adversely and if a profile with some work in IT and some in a bank as assistant manager wud soothe the eyes of interviewers while admission into b-schools and while placement at b-schools?? 2 more things abt me which i think i need to tell to get apt suggestions :- 1) I hate sitting infront of a dumb box for hours and coding does not excite me at all. 2) I took CAT 09 as an appearing candidate and cud fetch 94%ile. one call fm SIBM pune through SNAP (cudn't convert). No CAT 10(wasn't mentally prepared for it due to work).Seniors and peers, please suggest.

Go for bank P.O. Senior from SJSOM,IIT mumbai advised you perfectly.....
If you are really not happy in IT ...if u see no growth in your company.....y live a mediocre life....stop the stupidity of IT job...ur not committing a crime.....thr is nothing wrong in chasing ur dreams....path may be different.

Most importantly u will learn a lot about finance in banks than in IT....and yess ur profile will be lot better than mass IT people...Your interview will be different and interesting...All the best...

hey guys pls give me gud advice .i am now doing mba frm pune unvsty a very nominal collge.ihad gt admssn in pgpbfs at ximb whch i didnt go.try fms cat not done well.below 70 in cAT.NOW PRBLM IS I HAD TAKEN ADMSSN IN THS COOLGE JUST FOR THE SAKE OF TAKING.IAM GIVNG MICAT .CET.WAT U SAY SHOULD I STICK WITH THIS COLLGE GET A MBA THEN DO EXE MBA AFTER 3yrs as i have 2 yrs exp with me.

hello every1
dis yrs cat has been a debacle for me
to begin with im a fresher in d final yr right now, prepared for almost a year and took cat, scored a meager 85 percentile
sine i had my sems n also since i had lost all enthusiasm after cat(which i took on 18th wid wrong questions and a very difficult paper) couldnt really focus on the omets
have just managed a 103.75 in snap n looking forward 2 nmat which i took a retake on 30dec n have applied 2 siib,scmhrd,sibm-p all of which looks very hazzy right now

so with exactly no where to go(i applied 90+ collgs in cat),will be dropping a year and preparing for cat again, wid more stress on omets n cat d second priority

i study in a very low grade engineering college with not many placement opportunities, chances are high that i will be graduating without a job,n to be honest being an engineering student though, i dont have my basics in place im skeptical of getting placed in off campus,so the bottom line being i dont have a job n will not have 1 in the next 6-7 months i guess, even if i get placed, will not be getting a joining before cat 2011.

i will be graduating in june 2011 n will be taking cat n omets 5 month hence
i will start preparing for them d moment symbiosis shortlists are out, right now studying for gdpi

i need ur comments and advice me,how losing this year is worthfull and how should i structure my preps

Ok puys...here goes my story...
I am an electrical engineer from a reputed govt. colg in mumbai univ...2009 pass out...i am an MBA aspirant wish to take up marketing as my specialization....was working in manufacturing sector for a reputed MNC (Siemens)...during my tenure at my work place i used to get hardly any time for studies...( 12 -14 hrs on shop floor....) so ther ws energy ledt for studying....i could still manage 95 % le tht time.....after weighing up my options....i took a gamble n quit my job in mid september ( so in all i have an experience of 15 months)....n since thn devoting my whole time for preparation of CAT n other exams....
now comes the bad part of the story....the result are not in my favour.....my CAT %le is below wht i had achieved last yr without preparation ( so forget IIM,MDI, IMT....i do hv a profile based call for SP Jain...but chances are bleak considering the net score after adding my CAT score).....XAT toh....even god cant predict whts gonna happen ther....my low grad percentage (59%) has barred me even from appearing from FMS......as for SNAP, SIBM P is ruled out...SCMHRD is on borderline......
So i am left with only 1 option...MH CET.....last ye i had 99.1%le....could not make it to JB.....now this being my last chance to make my dream move of doin MBA this yr...i an working my ass off for CET...n practicing like anything.....
HOWEVER.....if the Luck factor plays its part...n i dont make it to JB or sydenham...thn i ll have to consider another job...
Now...i have put my CV on web portals like Naukri.com, monster.com etc...but so far they are giving me optins which are from manufacturing side (where again the job will b hectic)..
So i want ur opinion about various options i am open to considr
1. work in an uprising engineering firm (manufacturing/ engineering)
2. sit for bank PO exams ( less hectic thn my manufacturing job)
3. apply n work IT industry
4. be contented with whatever admit i get....

also if i take take up any of the job options above...how ill it lok whn coupled with my earlier work ex of 15 months in manufacturing + gap of 6 months since thn)

B.tech(mech) + core mech exp
B.tech(mech) + bank PO
B.tech(mech) + IT exp

pls help, m about to take up the job.

Nothing...you need a good CAT score only!!

double post deleted, had a gateway timed out error so I refreshed.

I am a 4th year engineering student. Want to start preparing for CAT 2011 from now. Methods and ways of getting off to a good start is what i require. If someone can elaborate the procedure of peaking one's performance in a span of 10 months of preparation, it will be of great help.Links to similar posts shall be highly appreciated.

Cheers!:cheerio:

i am a B.Tech grad of 2009 batch..after my grads i started preparing for navy and army and got recommended(selected) in SSB interviews 3 times but cudnt join bcos of not meeting medical standards and eventually 'wasted' time till now..now i will be writing cat 2011..my query is will this be a negative impact in the selections/interviews??cos they will probably treat this as a 1 and a half years of waste..if anyone knows abt this pls throw some light in this doubt of mine..

my percentages..

it seems u've had good prep for almost many mba exams...would suggest to first try for job from ur college..if not try on your own..if still not go for some coaching institute...but dont go for a break...i wd also suggest that apart from mba exams also give po exams side by side...

1. work in an uprising engineering firm (manufacturing/ engineering)
if u get 1, go for it ..would add to ur exp
2. sit for bank PO exams ( less hectic thn my manufacturing job)
if it extends ur gap..bad option..further po exams are hell lot easy..no need to specially sit for them
3. apply n work IT industry
y shift to IT..wd it add it any way to ur goal of mktg mba
4. be contented with whatever admit i get....
not a bad choice at all..but for now u concentrate on cet..not a bad choice coz thru cet also many good colleges are there wherein ppl get placed in good co. in case u make it to a not so good college thru cet then try to top in that college..the economy luks good for another year or two so probably no plcmnt issues i guess..but for now concentrate all ur energies on clearing cet..
5.during my tenure at my work place i used to get hardly any time for studies...( 12 -14 hrs on shop floor....) so ther ws energy ledt for studying.
and lastly i hope u've figured out the value of time..
6. i took a gamble n quit my job in mid september
take calculated risks and not gambles:thumbsup:
Hi ,

My past keeps on haunting me all the time and sometimes it saps me to the extent of demotivation. Below mentioned are my nemesis:

1) Just 68% in 12th(82% in 10th).
2) 3 years of gap between 12th and Btech.(for two years i
was pursuing BSC, have certificates to corroborate.)
3) Already of 25 years.

After discontinuing with BSC , i completed my Btech. from an NIT with CGPA of 7.35 and currently working with an IT firm for the last 1 year. Last season i had XIMB(XAT- 98.4%) and MDI(CAT- 98.20) calls but i didn't appear for the interviews as i was sure of not converting those calls and thought of working for sometime and build my profile(I have worked with CSR wing of my organisation and have few certificates too).

Below are my queries:
1) Is it possible to get into any of top 10-12 b schools of India with this profile?
2) If i get into any b school of above mentioned league how difficult it would be for me to get placed decently ?
3) Will my age take a toll on my placement prospects?
4) Do companies put some eligibility criteria for placements in b schools?
5) Will having CFA certification help me in building my profile and in getting into finance sector once out of b school ?

I expect someone from top 20 b school, who is well aware with b schools' interview and placement processes to answer my questions and help me out of this doldrums.

Regards,

Dear Friend , anything is possible in this world if u set your mind to it ..period !! You have to judge your own worth mate !! I would suggest you work hard and focus on cracking as many competitive exams as possible like CAT, JMET , XAT etc -thats the very first step.....dont think much about yr constraints , if you really have a fire within you to get an MBA you will get it , no matter what .....however let me tell u upfront ....please do not aim for an MBA degree juts for a high paying job or more bucks -(that is the reason 95% of junta is doing it ) -do it for the sake of learning what Management is all about and what value you can add to yourself .......then the "good job" and "big bucks" will follow - I hope you got my point........let me tell you about myself...... I worked for 8 years as an Engineer ........thought of valid reasons for doing an MBA and appeared in all competitive exams in 2006 , could not clear CAT, FMS etc ......got a so so rank in JMET and finally got selected to IIT Roorkee , at that point in time , placements were quite average and I was not even sure of getting a job after doing my MBA.....But my focus was knowledge and I thought I would get something or the other........I did my MBA very passionately , got a decent CGPA and then got a good job also......2 years down the line my pay packet was 3 folds and I visited a lot of countries and did a good "job" , I have quit the Corporate world and am thinking of becoming an entrepreneur ..........thanks to my MBA from IIT Roorkee......

Best of Luck

What I understand 4m ur statements:
1.U r persistent abt goals as u hav tried 3 times
2.U are practical enough 2 move on & tackle newer challenges.
u seem lyk a gud student & wud gt a call, bt d interview ppl will question u abt:
1.Why did u fail d physical test thrice? Dont u hav d mental firepower to last the entire race ?No offence intended.
2.Why dont u pursue career with HAL,DRDO or MES(Military Engg Services) if u couldnt make it to the armed forces ?On other hand,I would seriously suggest u take a shot @ d above, not only bcoz of ur very good grades (U will sail through most govt related interviews with those!!!) bt also bcoz u wanted (still desire ??) 2 serve d army...

If you answer d above, u r through...

Apart from that, wasted years r no big deal these days....ppl become Sr VPs in spite of gaps in education & jobs....

Hello

I have passed my B.Tech (ECE) in 2010 and looking to get admission for MBA in this Batch. The problem is that I'm having just 58% in my B.Tech and due to the low % I was not able to get placed .I'm fearing that this low score in graduation will haunt me in future also while getting placement during MBA.
and also please suggest how can I nullify the effects of the graduation %.
I'm having 78% and 79% in 10th and 12th respectively.

What I understand 4m ur statements:
1.U r persistent abt goals as u hav tried 3 times
2.U are practical enough 2 move on & tackle newer challenges.

thank u for replying brother..i was seletected twice in NAVY and Army once in technical branch under which MES comes..and its not the physicals brother..i cleared all the stages of the selections and just before joining found that i dont meet the medical standards(medical standards are not same as physical standards)..i even came frst in all india merit for Biotechnology for Army technical and it had only ONE vacancy..actually iam preparing for the civils also and dont knw anythng abt HAL or DRDO entries..since i am not getting fit for army standards even after going thru rigorous selctions i thot of going for management as the selections of army is mainly based on mangement skills and leadership to lead men in war...but only this year gap is making me think cos defence interviews differs a bit from MBA ones, and in defence year gap doesnt count if u are focussed..if any kind of questions is thrown at me regarding this i will be able to tackle but i dont know wheh they take year gap as a negative inspite of a good intervw..

1.A lot of companies use objectively quantifiable criteria for shortlisting candidate such as year of passing each semester, scores in exams & d college from where u did ur MBA,BE & lets be honest , you could lose out on those due to the gap.....
2.i can tel u from my own experience that i was not part of some shortlists becoz of my grades & it includes govt companies as well, & u may nt bag dat coveted job offer from d "Reputed" blue chip company.....
bt time flies really quickly & in a few months u could end up rated higher dan ur peers @ ur workplace....Even if we compress "long haul" to 2 years, objectively quantifiable criteria such CGPA is thrown into dustbin as remuneration is linked ur performance rating .......Money is name of the game honey

all in all , focus on u wat u wish to accomplish coz HAL,DRDO & govt PSUs requires a different kind of prep as compared to CAT.....Interestingly, DRDO however, has a CET like aptitude exam alongwith tech exam bt d job profile is highly technical & research oriented....IES(Engg Services) is an out & out technical exam,bt d job profile is completely managerial, not one bit technical!!!

hey..m in d last year f ma graduatn.doin bbm...n had appeard fr cat '10..bt it ws awful..i scored blow 50 prcntile.. nw i knw m nt dat bad!!:drinking: i had appeard fr sept mat n scored 96%ile..bt m nt interstd to go into any mat collgs!! ... n i also scored 95 in snap..bt again i knw m nt settln fr anythn less than top 20 b schools...so should i drop a year??or work aftr ma grad in june..n prepare along wid it..but u nvr knw wat CATcums up wid ds tym ? :w00t:..so will my hard wrk go waste..??or shud i go in SIIB,or Ibs,alliance lyk clgs ds year itself?? i also hav CFA in my mind.wt to do?/
