I did my B.Tech in Information Technology and graduated on Aug 2010. But I did not take up any job in the hope of getting a good B-school as I was getting good percentiles in mock exams...so decided to give my full effort and concentration to CAT.
But after getting the CAT results on 12th January, I was shocked and devastated...I never imagined I would get such a low percentile after performing reasonable well in the exam...
Now I am clueless on what to do... I neither have a job now nor I can get into a good B-school with this percentile...
My reluctance to take up a job was because of my lack of interest in programming/ coding ....
Can you guys please help me and suggest me what to do now ??
Will I be able to find a job which does not demand programming/ coding ??
Please help me Puys...I'm extremely sad and clueless...
My profile :
Xth -- 77.00% XIIth -- 68.00% B.Tech(I.T) -- 8.27 out of 10.
Please help.
Well I think one of the things which you should learn from this phase in life is that, everything is never served in a golden platter. You got to struggle at times and I guess this is your time to face the brunt of tough times and I am sure with a little bit of self resolve you should be able to come out of it. CAT isn't an easy exam to crack with the level of competition that is present.
I would suggest you to get into a job, which need not be coding etc. You can get into any other domain of your interest which would also help you during your MBA, for example, a marketing or sales or finance work. The pay package should not be of concern to you at the moment. You should realize that. And yeah, it isnt really difficult to get a job which doesnt involve Coding, otherwise.. there would be not other sectors apart from IT sector. Only thing is, by keeping yourself surrounded by a group of people wherein, everyone is placed in some IT company or the other, the prospects of finding a job in any other company sounds limited. Well, it is definitely difficult with limited contacts but there is ample scope as well.
Now once you get a job, its important for you to focus back on things and start preparing for CAT again.

Thanks for replying and Yes I completely agree with your suggestion.... But the matter of fact is that I could not search a single job related to finance...Can you please suggest me what kind of a finance job I should look for given my engineering background and where exactly to find it ? It would be of real help to me...kindly help...please

this would entirely be a personal choice .. evaluate yourself and find out what level of colleges you desperately want to get in and then accordingly prepare for. But firstly, prepare hard for further placements.

definitely a good move IMHO .. this is not going to hamper your chance in bagging a seat from IIM of your choice
hello every1 dis yrs cat has been a debacle for me to begin with im a fresher in d final yr right now, prepared for almost a year and took cat, scored a meager 85 percentile sine i had my sems n also since i had lost all enthusiasm after cat(which i took on 18th wid wrong questions and a very difficult paper) couldnt really focus on the omets have just managed a 103.75 in snap n looking forward 2 nmat which i took a retake on 30dec n have applied 2 siib,scmhrd,sibm-p all of which looks very hazzy right now
so with exactly no where to go(i applied 90+ collgs in cat),will be dropping a year and preparing for cat again, wid more stress on omets n cat d second priority
i study in a very low grade engineering college with not many placement opportunities, chances are high that i will be graduating without a job,n to be honest being an engineering student though, i dont have my basics in place im skeptical of getting placed in off campus,so the bottom line being i dont have a job n will not have 1 in the next 6-7 months i guess, even if i get placed, will not be getting a joining before cat 2011.
i will be graduating in june 2011 n will be taking cat n omets 5 month hence i will start preparing for them d moment symbiosis shortlists are out, right now studying for gdpi
i need ur comments and advice me,how losing this year is worthfull and how should i structure my preps
I am in final year of my engg and I have call from FMS and IIFT. Also i have secured a job in software division of an I-Bank. I am hugely disappointed with my cat scores and I have a feeling like many others that that is not my score card. I am down since 12th and not able to continue my gd/pi prep for FMS. I m sure that IF I convert FMS my parents would force me to join it and my dream of an IIM will be over . Is it a mistake not to give 100 percent to convert FMS call? I m quite satisfied wid my job and I want to play another round of roulette. I know I may not able to clear any exam next year but I am willing to take risk
PS: I also know it would take a humongous effort from my side to convert my FMS call.
Right now I am working in State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH) as PO........from NOV 10....... before this I was in SBP as CLERK ( Sept 2009 to Sept 2010)
So I have 14.5 months exp in Bank............:-P
but now I got selected as Insp of Post..........(Inspector in Postal Depatt) 1) It is an Administrative Job:cheerio: 2) has recruitment power 3) more opportunity here to take Decision as MY OWN LEVEL..... 4) have to manage, and Investigate (surprise visit) to all Post Offices in my Sub-division........ 5) For CAT point of View:- SAT and SUN off
now my query is whether should I join this job or not...........
I ll write cat 11..........
will joining this add some point in profile or not..........
as 1) it is Cent Govt job.........NOT ANY CORPORATE JOB.... 2) while in Bank I can justify in my interview coz finance rel. exp
Your notion of 'bank po' job is of 7-8 hours is not correct :lookround:
Bank PO during probation are posted at various locations and if you shift your job, you will take a few months to settle down, by the time CAT would be near you.
Just try to squeeze time out of your schedule. Preparing daily for 2 hours and giving mocks during weekends will be sufficient enough as you already seem to have fundamentals in place (94 percentile )
I diasgree......what you said might be true to a certain extent....But some software engineers are screwd badly....It depends on manager and projects. What will you do if u have to come on weekends also...At the time of preparation it is Ok. But i have seen employees having extreme workload at the time of CAT and other exams. Managers sometimes reject the leave application.....Moreover Bank P.O will gv u lesser stress than IT sector. I have two examples in my family and i better know who is enjoying more in life.... 😃

r u nuts.....leaving FMS for IIM... i b'leve and m sure many others as well that FMS is at par with IIM's, and ven seeing the fee FMS has..its a brilliant option. u shud grab it if ur able to touch it. its not about branding ur education...its not a bathing soap...its abt the quality of education...and quality of education in FMS is very good.
thas a personal opinion, but if ur a brand freak...IIMs are dere for u..crack dem

if u think the new job is more challenging and it would add to your learning definitely go for it...just being in ur old job thinking that it mite help u in cat is not good enuff...what if u dont make it thru cat...u will end u loosing a better learning job and cat both..
dont worry if the new job will be helpful or not in ur mba interviews...atleast some interviewers are humane ppl who will understand ur dilemma and your choice and the circumstances in which you made the choice.. Hope this helps... and concentrate all ur energies in clearing cat/other mba exams ATB
i m an engineer in mech branch.4th yr i have placement of tcs and accenture at hand... m not elgible for bank po now coz i hav'nt got my degree.
1.my ques is if i work in IT after having degree in mech, will it hamper my chances.
2.how can i get into private banks as an engineer.
3.what type of computer literacy certificate we have to produce for PSU bank PO post(its mentioned dat we have to have a comp literacy certi)
getting into it wont hamper ur chances...mine is also a mixture combination.. pvt banks is difficult as they take only mba/ca...try for some jugaad in pvt banks also thru PO route u can enter.. 3rd point no idea..
My dilemma is: I got a Bachelors Degree in International Business Management from the University of Akron, Ohio. I studied there on a 100% scholarship. I also worked for US Department of State for 1 year.I came back to India after graduation in August 2008 as I got frustrated with interviews which said "You are the best candidate for the job, but your...VISA..ummm.." and considering the market Downturn, I accepted the first job I got in India, working in Private Equity at an Investment Bank, working in Night shift. The salary was alright (about 28K), but, the night shift was killing me! But, the profile was pretty neat and the work i did was very meaningful and i worked in a fabulous team. I applied to quite a few places in Bangalore, but, any decent, non BPO job asked for an MBA or else..they deemed me overqualified ! ( I am not sure how I was either over qualified or...needed an MBA), perhaps the logic was that for a lower level job, my qualification and abilities that i reflected in the Interview made me overqualified and for a higher level, they needed an MBA as per the books! But, I stuck to my job and finally, once I was completed 2 yrs, I left the place and started to prepare for CAT and other exams and also worked for my Uncle in helping him establish his business in Bangalore... Missed out on IIFT call as I messd up a couple of question (marked incorrectly though i knew the answer), FMS due to low QA marks and CAT...well...let's just...'Normalize' it. i did decently in SNAP and got a 111.5. I am not sure if it is enough for SIBM Pune, but is definitely enough for SIBM Bangalore. now, my dilemma is... I will definitely go for SIBM Pune, if selected... But, should I go for SIBM Bangalore if not selected for Pune? i have another job offer (Day stuff) with a higher salary and I am tempted to take it and prepare for CAT and other exams for next season... But, with the shaky status of CAT and the announcement that other exams may be discontinued next season, I am not sure if I should risk another year, just for CAT as 1 bad day could just...ruin me. Aap sab bolo...ki Kya karein kya naa karein? Just suggestions would give me a fresh perspective.

Well, I guess its more or less of going after what your heart says and your mind accepts. Logically speaking, a job in s/w division of an I-Bank is a good enough reason to defer your MBA for a couple of years, but "an IIM" as a reason to defer MBA from FMS isn't.
Except for if you want to do an MBA only from a particular institute, it makes no sense to leave FMS to wait for another year and still not be sure if u will get that college (I guess u do know what online cat is doing). More-ever the kind of companies that visit FMS are almost as good as any of the IIMs (agreed that top 5 % of A,B,C get a better job but after that FMS is at-least as good as them).
bottom line: If you want to do an MBA from college X because your father(or someone else) did an MBA from that college or because X is the only college, you see being a part of, ditch FMS and write CAT again next year.
If you want to do an MBA for career progression, learning or exposure, grab on to FMS, you will not regret your decision.
