Hey, this is an engineer turned IT fresher this july got placed in an IT industry, tis 6months now. I appeared for cat in 2009, didnt really get time to study for cat 10 cz of deadly schedules during the training period, regular tests and shit.
percentiles in 2009 cat were like QA:96,VA:95,DI:36 OA:86
i didnt as i cudnt get into any of the (good)bschools and the dreams of getting into a bschool keeps haunting me evry nyt, waking me up saying what the hell are you doing in an IT company.. and all I can cock up is "Working(wasting time)"
please help with what and how shud I get about with my dream.

Dost believe in yourself....all is not lost...you still have the FMS and official CAT results to be declared yet....and you'll definitely score big in them....Now coming back to getting frustrated working in S/w industry.Tell me the name of one guy who is not?? Try to move on in life.Learn to be happy in whatever you are doing(coding,programming,bug checking or for that matter any other thing).You still have one more year to go for CAT,XAT and all other exams.If you're really sure that you can crack any good B-school next year,go for it!!

if the dreams of getting into a good bschool keep haunting u..the same mite invoke passion and dedication in you to burn the midnight oil and crack CAT or other MBA exams and eventually get into a good bschool...
Secondly an IT job is not like working in HELL..u mite feel so but at the end of day any job u do for maybe a year or so mite seem like turning to hell...Atleast u've a job & salary in an industry which is atleast expected to do well for the next 2-3 years unless there is another recession...
Be patient and work your way up...keep giving exams and do multitasking.. u need to put in extra efforts...

Hi Puys!!! I did B-Tech in Chemical Engineering from a reputed institute.I want to do MBA in Marketing after gaining some experience & currently, I am jobless. My questions are: a) How good is Process Engineering + MBA option?...I mean what kind of job profile I will get after finishing MBA. b) If not a Process Engineer, and working in a pharma company as a production engineer or in any chemical company as a marketing guy & then I pursue MBA - what kind of job profile can I expect then?

I knw with so much overflow of resources in this industry....Growth of an employee will be stagnate...Morever a boss who treats me like a dog. Damn i'm even asked to come on weekends also...sometimes night shifts..
I had earlier raised this issue in one of the threads...All i got reply was "try to manage time..Utilise your extra time....Never quit your job and sit at home for mba preparation. Work-ex matters a lot...It will be diffcult to convince in interview for a gap"
Now what i am asking is whether switching jobs are justified....Now its make or break for me....I can't keep giving CAT every year for 4-5 yrs and getting 94-95 percentile everytime. I need some preparation time and mental peace.So that i can become more efficient at studies....My Patience is being tested in my IT company and there is a limit to everything.Age is also a factor. For how many years i will gv CAT.And i personally don't like the advices like "If you don't clear CAT..you will have a job atleast.So don't quit ur job".What i feel is that it can make u lethargic.I have examples in front of me who are giving CAT for 5 yrs. And when they don't crack it they give excuses like atleast they have a job.
So after a lot of introspection i have decided to quit....Now i have 2 options.
1> I take some low profile jobs like...Teacher at a school,college or faculty at Mba coaching institutes or work as a bank P.O or some consultancy job.
2> Sit at home.Join a coaching institute and Go all out for CAT 2011. I will also give all mba exams iift, snap,nmat,jmet,fms,XAT...
Moreover in 2009 i only gave CAT and got 93 percentile OA and this year all exams are close calls. Missed jmet cutoff by 4 marks..waiting for my snap and CAT results....
So please advice out of those 2 options which is the better way to go for CAT 2011.

Well as an IT guy , it does get tough to work in a stagnating environment but if a person is from a middle class family , you have to make compromises and i did that , i didnt give CAT for 4-5 times as i didnt have funds at all to finance coaching , buy forms , you need a budget of atleast 50k , i gave CAT last year and took admission and i know its tough to manage job and preparation, but what do you think life is going to get easier while studying for MBA or Post MBA , i dont think so at all , one needs to manage one's time and has to have the determination to get through
On the other hand , if you have the financial back up and have the appetite to risk your career , please try for other exams than CAT , (although the news is XAT and other exams will be cancelled), but CAT has become too much of a lottery to take such a risk, i have seen people crash wid the final score who were toppers in Mocks
Mental Peace has to come from within , not from a proffession , you plan to be a manager , so you need to manage time , managing your manager is also a part of your job mate , please stand up to him and ask for what is acceptable to you and whats not
Regarding joining coaching classes as a teacher , i think is a good option , i have a few people in my class from such backgrounds , so you can definetly go for such an option but would like you to reconsider and take it as a last option

Hi all This is my first post here and I am sure I am the only one with the kind of dilemma that stares at me this very moment. I passed my BTech with an average of 7.15 in CSE this year and almost as soon as that I joined a firm in the capacity of a tech journalist (You have read it right). My mistake was that I thought that the position was something like a miniature version of Gizmodo or Endgadget, but sadly it was not. The work I did was concerned mainly with reblogging and stuff. Still everything was great till 6 months, ie till the time we were due for a raise. The promise in the campussing documents was a 50 % hike, but unfortunately the firm decided to ignore all of that and asked us to wait for another 6 months. Stuck in a job I hated and worse with a very meagre pay I decided that enough was enough and planned to quit the organization. MBA was my goal and I had planned to wait for a couple of years before i even try. It seems now that my plans have just been sent to the cleaners. I went for an Interview with a Bpo firm yesterday and I was told that I could join it anyday I want to with a slightly better scale. I was thinking about applying for the big tech companies but I have been out opf touch for like 6 months.
My question is to all of you is that please guide me as to what I do right now. The firm is behaving very oddly and all the fresh recruits are leaving one by one. Even now if I study and appear for the CAT I'll be jobless for about a year. I am at the verge of submitting my resignation. I plan to do so on Monday. placement companies (TCS, Infosys, Accenture, HCL, Satyam) are approaching college in coming days and also i have given MBA exams like CAT MAT XAT IBSAT Snap etc.
i dont hv much chance of getting through a really good college dis year.
so what do you suggest i should take up job or do MBA from an average college and maintain the continuity of my studying career and then look for job?

Even i feel that every IT company is the same...But i won't advice infosys or wipro because of mandatory 9.25 working hours. I'm telling its mandatory..sometimes it can go upto 12-13 hours depending upon project.Tell her to join a firm which might pay less but with better flexible hours.. My IBM friends go to office at 10 and come back at 6...So its cool i guess. she has to go to IIM's. She has to prepare well...Moreover she can go for some less hectic profiles like lecturer or so....Tell her not to choose compnay by reputation...It might hamper her chances of going to IIM-A.Since any full time work-ex will suffice..she should go for less hectic job...
I am working in a IT company HCL for past 1.5 years now and I am interested in doing MBA from a reputed college.
In order to concentrate on my preparation for CAT2011 and GMAT exam I am considering a decision to leave my current job and get myself involved with an NGO as it will give me two benefits :
1) More time for preparation as it will be less taxing as compared to present job.
2) It will give me a different kind of profile and it may also help in case I want to apply for GMAT coz I ve herd that foreign Univ. take NGO experience in good stead.
Am I making a right decision ? or should I continue to work with HCL till CAT2011 .:lookround::lookround:
PS: I am not interested in furthering my career in IT and I wont get a Job in any other Field.

I agree with you about managing time and work but as you said i can not give CAT for 5 yrs..There is some personal constraints for that.....So m thinking of switching job....I can understand CAT is unpredictable but there are few other good colleges also....TOP 20 ....I know i'm not having a value addition in my present company. I will have my work-ex just on papers..Not in head...It will be like faking the experience in the interview...Moreover what is wrong about switching job.Many people switch job....Is switching job is a black mark in career.....Regarding managing the manager thing..i think its easier said than done..It all depends on the person who is manager..And its not only manager ...there are senior ppl to manager also.Then team leads..Even they can use you as they want...Brother , if you are lucky ,u will get the best manager and a chilled out project but situation is not same for everyone... Sometimes life puts you in a situation where u need to take a call.....I don't want to be in 90-95 percentile range all my life... As you wish mate , i know all about IT, i had almost 3 years of work ex at Infosys and was leading a team , last year while preparing for CAT , used to work on weekends and from 8am to 10 pm everyday , use to stay back at office to prepare for CAT till 2 am everyday , as i neither had the comfort of a laptop nor internet , sometimes use to give mock cats in cybercafes as well
if you want you can do anything in life mate , but i am sure you know whats best for you
