Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Hi Puys
I have done B-tech in Computer Science( 2010 pass out)72%

1. Should I go for job Hunt, get placed, gain some experience and then come back to hit exams
or
2. I go on full length preparation of exams and give all the exams.

go for a job hunt, get placed, secure ur feet first and then balance exam prep with work.

you have a decent grad %, i know people with lesser % getting placed in IT who can barely write a factorial program in C. brush up a bit on engg. fundas, practice some apti quest, prepare for expected interview quest., there's no reason you won't land a decent job.

reason is, MBA entrance have no guarantee, there's a possiblity that even after preparing hard u screw up on the d-day. if that happens you'll have a long jobless gap that will further hinder your chances of getting a job in future as well as become a negative factor in MBA interviews. that will land you in deep s*** and you don't want that.

Hello Puys,
I am contemplating to take a short term course may be for about 3 months in finance especially investment banking , before i kick start my MBA hopefully in a good college. Can i anyone suggest good insti for my criterion?
Thanks in advance ,BTW iam working

the only option you have is NCFM certis, but those are very easy to pass so won't add much value since anybody can do them, they are not a differentiating factor for admission, but if you are not bothered about that and want to gain some rudimentary knowledge, then you can go for a few (6-modules. its not a course per se, study and pass the exams, simple!

i don't think anybody can learn much about investment banking in such a short time as 3 month. finance is a field with great depth.

there's a course called certified financial planner (CFP), not anyway related to IB and it takes about 1yr (verify this pls).

one of the most popular IB related qualification is CFA, the level 1 alone will take around 6 months of dedicated study and exams are real tough.

Hi ,

My past keeps on haunting me all the time and sometimes it saps me to the extent of demotivation. Below mentioned are my nemesis:

1) Just 68% in 12th(82% in 10th).
2) 3 years of gap between 12th and Btech.(for two years i
was pursuing BSC, have certificates to corroborate.)
3) Already of 25 years.

After discontinuing with BSC , i completed my Btech. from an NIT with CGPA of 7.35 and currently working with an IT firm for the last 1 year. Last season i had XIMB(XAT- 98.4%) and MDI(CAT- 98.20) calls but i didn't appear for the interviews as i was sure of not converting those calls and thought of working for sometime and build my profile(I have worked with CSR wing of my organisation and have few certificates too).

Below are my queries:
1) Is it possible to get into any of top 10-12 b schools of India with this profile?
2) If i get into any b school of above mentioned league how difficult it would be for me to get placed decently ?
3) Will my age take a toll on my placement prospects?
4) Do companies put some eligibility criteria for placements in b schools?
5) Will having CFA certification help me in building my profile and in getting into finance sector once out of b school ?

I expect someone from top 20 b school, who is well aware with b schools' interview and placement processes to answer my questions and help me out of this doldrums.

Regards,

Buddy,

I sincerely believe that you should have attended your calls last year.. no matter you would have converted them or not, atleast experience should have given you an idea about the areas where interviewer might want to grill you . Also, i suggest to never presume that you wont be selected... you never know what's the quality in you which interviewer might like and you get through.

Coming to your queries,
1. Leaving apart few IIMs and b-schools like S.P.Jain where good weightage is given to profile, i think you can make to top B-Schools.

2. Getting placed would depend on your performance in college as well and if you do well there then past profile should not be a big problem... though, there could be a fight for summer placements as it is based on past profile... for finals, your performance in college also plays a major role and by doing well there, you can overcome other drawbacks of past.

3. Age is not a factor to hinder placements.

4. Yes, few companies d have certain eligibility criteria.

5. CFA definitely helps in building profile and there are few banks which give preference to people who have cleared CFA during final placements.

Getting into few IIMs and b-schools which give lot of weightage to profile, might be slightly tough for you ... but, for other top league b-schools, you can always get through by performing good in mba exams and proving your mettle in GDPI.

Executive MBA shall be better option only if you have gained good amount of work experience and that too, when you want to pursue your management career in the same field where you have work experience.

i started preparation CAT from last year........i didn't gave Nov 2010 cat ..
i crack CAT IN ONE SHOT...........not round and round

As replied to your post in other thread, it is possible to crack CAT in one go.

However, you will need to work to improve your weak areas like english ... and be confident that with some decent preparation and efforts, you can always crack CAT, no matter what has been your past record.

I will suggest to forget about past records... and start preparing and you will succeed surely.

Hi Guys,

Need opinion from you all regarding how I should plan out the next phase of my career.

Brief Background

X:90
XII:78
College:IIT Kharagpur, 2nd in Department, internships in Australia, Germany and USA
Work Ex : 1.5 yrs
Profile : Senior Business Analyst with a major Analytics firm, currently onsite for 6 months as a Consultant with one of the world's biggest retailers.
Already earning >8 lpa and I know that with a change in job I will cross 10-11 lpa and also a promotion. Now, does it make sense for me to write CAT in 2011 or should I wait for 1-2 years and then go for ISB/IIM A PGPX?

Wrote CAT this year and not sure whether it would be prudent for me to go for IIMs below A,B,C and L. Someone please advice what would be best for me??

Thanks all!

Thanks a lot Varun,

i have some more queries..

1>i want to persue my management career in the same IT sector only and i have 2 years of experience.
so will it be better for me to go for executive mba.I am in dilemma that i should go for cat preparation or not(because of week academic background)

2>is the syllabus for GMAT and CAT is same??

3>which is the right way to start the preparation??

Hi,

I have an experience of 5 years with the leading IT services company of India. However, I want to shift my profile from technical to non-technical side, as am not inclined towards coding, etc but feel more interested in leading a team, talking to clients, understand their needs and give suggestions. It seems role of BA most closely matches my interests.
Please suggest as to how to move to a BA role; are their any courses that could be done, or any activities that could be pursued, or is MBA the preferred option to change role.

Thanks
Nirav

I am a CA final student and my exams for CA final exams are in first 2 weeks of november 2011.I am doing B.Com(A&F;) from IGNOU and i will be qualified for the degree in march 2011.My internship of 3.5 years gets over in september 2011.

a)Am i eligible for CFA L1 exams?
b)Will i be able to prepare satisfactorily for CFA l1 exams in Dec2011 exams without hampering my CA final exams in november.
The syllabus for finances in CA is in IPCC level is http://220.227.161.86/14621IPCC_Syllabus.pdf (subject name:Financial Mgmt)
and in CA final is http://220.227.161.86/169final_new_syllabus.pdf (strategic fin. mgmt)

Or the next exams in june2012 exams.

c)Are the syllabus of the CA papers and L1 somewhat similar?

Hi Puys,

These days I am quite a bit confused. So just want to hear views of U all.

I am currently working in software.Have 5 yrs of work experience. But slowly I have felt I am quite bored of the monotonous nature of my job.

I want to change the stream and wnt to do an MBA.THis means I have to prepare for MBA and ol.But I cant strt doing my MBA until next yr.By that time i wud have work expereince of 6 yrs.
Now I hear if I do an executive full time MBA,I cant change my stream ie I cant go to advertising/finance.

So my question is if I opt for a 2 yr full time MBA,will it be ok for me?I hope that I will not be a loser?or I shud continue with 1 yr executive MBA?

Does any one know about CAPM certification... Also if there is a seperate thread for project management queries, then please guide me.

Here goes the answers to your questions :)

1. Operations management is as important in services sector as it is in any other sector. Operations manager needs to deal with the execution of every project which a company from service sector takes up.

This includes taking up a project, deciding and telling the client about the number of days you will take up to complete project ( this is very crucial as per corporate policies and you need you are expected to be accurate in this else company suffers ), staffing of resources to any particular project, supervising the execution of project in the optimized manner, doing all the relevant planning and checking the in time delivery of expected deliverables to customers ... are few of the things expected from an operations manager in services sector.

2. Almost all major IT companies have COOs these days and these are the people who are responsible for execution of all undertaken projects in the best possible way. Coupled with the answer to the first question, i believe you now have a better idea of what operation manager is expected to do in IT. Though, during initial years of career, you will join companies at a position which won't have word 'operations' as such included in it but the work is related to operations and few years down the line, you have a career ladder which ends up making you COO 😃

3. Operations manager might be required to do field as well depending on the type of industry you join and profile you are being offered in it.

4. NITIE Mumbai, SJMSOM IIT Mumbai and S.P.Jain are the three most reputed colleges when it comes to Operations management.

5. All companies ranging from FMCG, Manufacturing, Telecom, services etc pick people for operations management. You name an industry and it will be recruiting people for operations management.

Hope this helps

Yes, the package will definitely increase over the course of time and so will the work pressure, the deadlines, the workload, BP, the number of abuses hurled at managers , coffee cups drunk and cigarettes smoked everyday ..

As for Deloitte as a company - I don't know. But one thing I know for sure - if you find it lousy then don't despair as all IT companies are lousy. I am not sounding bitter or sarcastic. All jobs are "bullshit" in one way or the other.
The trick is to to find a job where you find the "bullshit" tolerable.

You can groan at this post but please save it as within 2-3 years you will find that it is true.

Hey, this is an engineer turned IT fresher this july got placed in an IT industry, tis 6months now. I appeared for cat in 2009, didnt really get time to study for cat 10 cz of deadly schedules during the training period, regular tests and shit.

percentiles in 2009 cat were like QA:96,VA:95,DI:36 OA:86

i didnt as i cudnt get into any of the (good)bschools and the dreams of getting into a bschool keeps haunting me evry nyt, waking me up saying what the hell are you doing in an IT company.. and all I can cock up is "Working(wasting time)"

please help with what and how shud I get about with my dream.

Thanks & Regards,
