In most of the cases ... this much time is sufficient for preparing and cracking CAT if you use this time wisely ... distribute time appropiately among all 3 sections π
Hard work coupled with smart analysis of mocks and one's strengths and weaknesses along with right attitude are the only requirements for cracking CAT ... if you have them then the person with acads like you need not be pessimistic.... rather be optimistic , self confident and go ahead with preparation
Person with profile as yours should not target anything less than top 15 colleges .. no matter whether you end up earning more or less from colleges outside top 15 list ... so , no need to think about colleges in 30-50 rank bracket.
According to me , correspondence or distance mba do not add a significant value to one's knowledge as well as profile ... i always prefer as well as suggest people to go only for 2 year regular mba program as you get to explore many things during these 2 years of mba .... and 1 yr mba program for people with more than 4-5 years of work ex if they want to pursue career in their field of experience even after mba.
Hope this helps Varun
Can you please tell me how profiles are judged? For exampe you said the person above shouldn't target anything less than top 15, so does that mean he can do better than SIBM/NMIMS/IMT etc?
I am a PIO student, so can you tell me what someone with my profile should do? I am going to apply to SIBM/SCMHRD this year.
BSc Economics from a top 10 uk university - current average is 68%. 4 internships and 2 work experience stints (Big 4 Corporate Finance, Grant Thornton Tax, Asian spring week, civil service internship in energy department, I.T company and a trading body).
Do you feel SIBM/SCMHRD would be a good fit for me?

i'm not that experienced as many others here (CAT 2010 is my debut), still i'll share what worked for me.
AFA VA/RC is concerned, any good quality reading material will do. Newspapers, magazines, non-fiction, fiction, wikipedia articles, other online resources etc.
But don't read anything that is too easy to grasp and has colloqual errors like chetan bhagat novels and the hundreds other chetan bhagat inspired engineer-turned-writer stuff, chicklit and boylit novels. You won't gain much from these.
Read what is slightly above your comfort level. Newspaper editorials are excellent. Read, understand and analyse. But reading too dense stuff which goes over your head is not suggested.
As you cultivate the habit of reading, you'll feel your comfort level is gradually increasing and you can now understand some denser material too. It's a slow and steady process.

Buddy,
Different colleges have different parameters to evaluate a profile..... also, different colleges give different weightages to different parameters like acads, work ex , extra curriculars etc while judging a profile.
In my opinion, person with your profile might wait and apply to other colleges under CAT, XAT and FMS rather than going for SNAP. This is my personal opinion with no offence to any college.

For improving reading speed and RCs , you can refer to Arts & Letters Daily - ideas, criticism, debate ... it has articles from diverse topics and you will not have to read just novels here π You will find magazines and newspapers online as well and should make a habit to read them as that will help in online cat more than reading hard copies of books, magazines etc.
My Academics X - 89%(Matriculation syllabus) X II - 96.1%(Matriculation syllabus) BE- Mechanical - BITS Pilani - goa campus- CGPA 6.71 (With no history of arrears) ,
I am currently working as a Software Engineer a private firm, Hyderabad. My work experience - 11 months ( Had my Date of joining in Dec 2009 due to recession)
It was my 11nth Standard when there were no facilities in my school, no good lecturers but I was damn foolish and mad to get into BITS P College, as I had my background in my IX and X nth in a rural school and 2 years of extensive hard work made me get into it. Had a change of taking EEE & EnI with my BITSAT score but my interest in industrial management made me choose mechanical. First turn back, a wrong decision as for ....
But when i had been there the education system, level and knowledge of teaching/students was damn high ( Since I had no coaching & deep knowledge, It was just due to my math and english I just made through with avg. scores in Physics and chem.) and hence wasn't able to pick up anything in the class where I just started with a GPA of 5 but dragged it to 6.71 by the end. Campus placements for core companies at the end just went on seeing the GPA and the Job that i got into was software with a package of 2.5 LPA. Second turn back (ending up with a software job) Second turn back (as I just hate coding)
I just hate this job where i need to fixing bugs with continuous monitoring which is making my life hell and I just feel getting out of here.
After having three turn backs since last 5 years after 2 years of hardship i went through in my 11nth and 12th,currently struggling to know where am I and where should i be , I just decided I want to get out of here before things turn out bad and get to a place of strategy making and management ( my areas of interest)
I'm very sure and very confident if i start now, I can change things in an year as I just realized that I lost an year and half already in this job which pays me very low and makes me work for 14-16 hours a day. I just want to get out of here.
Can you please suggest me on these below jotted points to enable my aim of getting out of software.
1) I just wanna do a quick start on everything ( I mean all the four parts). Hence Please suggest me books for Verbal, Apti & for DI. I'm ready to take TIME material but not sure if that is good( Need suggestions here). Started running through Norman lewis last weekend for Vocabulary.
2) As on experience people who have faced already the same situation in software companies, Suggest me on when and where I can find time to learn things other than on weekends.
3) Also , Please let me know how the hell should i make things work balancing office and preparation ( Please answer this on priority)
Please reply to get my mind think again of what exactly is happening right now and what actions are to be taken to get things in place.
3) Also , Please let me know how the hell should i make things work balancing office and preparation ( Please answer this on priority)
I will let somebody else tackle the rest- but for this point -
A very simple mantra is ..
When you are in office - Just focus on Office - Forget CAT (apart from stuff like reading etc. which can be done without affecting your work)
When you are studying for CAT - Just forget Office. Make the goal for MBA your whole world...
Cheers!!!
Its a long Journey ahead!!
Keep the Faith
P.S. Just my 2 cents. The MBA should be a"PULL" factor . You want to do it because you want to do something in Life . Not a "Push" factor .that you are doing it to get out of S/W coding... It may turn out 3 years later you are equally miserable at your MBA job. Trust Me!! As a recruiter I see live examples of that everyday!!!

Yes, TIME material is appropiate to go for . For QA, you can also refer to Arun Sharma's book simultaneously.
For DI, there is no good book as such.. study material of coachings is enough for basics and then it is all about mocks when it comes to DI.
Once you are done with basics, go for solving mocks from previous years with in depth analysis.. try to find out your strengths and weaknesses and then work on them .. keep monitoring your performance in every mock and work accordingly forming an appropiate strategy for yourself.
2) As on experience people who have faced already the same situation in software companies, Suggest me on when and where I can find time to learn things other than on weekends.
There are times when people who are not working on critical projects are free... they do utilize that time for studying in office.... they generally have some online material which they go through in office. Apart from this, working people also take few days off from office before the exam date.
Also, on weekdays, working people do try to find out 1-2 hours on regular basis after returning from office so that they remain in practice and do not get out of touch with preparation. On weekends, stretched hours of practice helps π

Even if a 'Government/P.O in a PSU Bank' job is your ultimate goal, it will be better for you to try for jobs in s/w companies too.
Keep your options open as government jobs recruitment cycle is quite long.
You will always have the option of quitting your s/w job if you get the Government job of your choice.
If you are very clear about the idea that you will want to work in a PSU, you can avoid placement in companies which want you to sign a bond for 1 or 2 years.

i think there r bonds in wipro, tcs or cts or any other good software companies..so if i get placed in these companies should i join,as thr wuld be no posibility of joining banking in 1 Or 2 Year..and i would not be able to sit for intrvw in some banks even if i clear the written..so do u think i should join companies without bond?should i b able to leave that company if i get a final call in any bank without any problem?
Hello Senior puys, First of all my details : 10th-77%, 12th 80% BTech (UPTU--62.4%) Workex: 38 mnths ( IT industry)
Puys as i have mentioned above I have over 3 yrs of exp in the IT industry. However my heart lies in Marketing Research and related Analysis. Have been fortunate enough to have had a rather hassle free year at job, and have been able to prepare well. I am presently working in JP Morgan Chase as an App Developer. I would like to know what colleges should i target considering my experience ? I would want to join a college where I get myriad oppurtunities to diversify my profile , as well as leverage on my experience. Also ,if i migrate to a diff profile (mktng) would i still be eligible for lateral placements as i wudnt be having relevant experience in that case .. (As far as AIMCAts are concerned I have on an avg managed 95+ percentile.) Thanks in advance
Hi all i am an electrical engineer by profession done B.E in 2003. started as an Asstt. production manager in a mettalurgical company for 1 yr then switched to erection and installation engineer (elctrical & communication) in Dubai worked for 1 & a half yr and after returning back started a PLC & SCADA course of 4 months after that worked as a electrical design engineer for LV and lighting design in shops and malls, and after 1 yr came to japan in a printing giant company and still here from last 3 yrs as control design engineer working in designing wire harness and little control panel designing. so overall experienece of 7 yrs. Now want to come back in india but afraid that working here has degraded my skills and technology. so i am very much confused with Executive MBA of 1 yr from IIMs in India thru HUGHES.net or TPM/TQM from JIPM ,Japan or SAP (modules which will suit my profile) from Siemens India. As the fees structure is almost the same i just want to rebuild and boost my career but with taking my past experience with me so that i can get, better opprtunity of having experience. Please suggest me what should i opt for. which will be best suited for me according to my job profiles of past. please Thanking u all in advance
I am a CAT 2010 aspirant. I have 12 months of experience. I passed out in may 2009 with a B.Tech degree. The problem is I had been job hopping all this while. I have 2 months of experience in GE Money as an associate during my last sem of engg. But I had to leave the job as i had my end sem exams. After that I worked with Dell for 5 months spanning from july 2009 to nov 2009. I could not continue as the job was really not upto my expectations and i wanted to give a shot at CAT 2009 with some preparation. i could not fare well at CAT 2009. In Jan 2010 i joined another firm and worked till May after which i have been preparing for CAT 2010. The question which i have is should i mention my experience in the application forms of different colleges, as job hopping is not very appealing and i might face rejection cos of that in my interview. Also that i only have my joining letters and pay slips and not my experience certificate as i could not fulfill the notice period as per company norms. what should i do ? would they understand and accept my work experience? please guide and help. I really want to add my work Ex because i have a learned a lot and have experience with MNCs like GE and Dell and it has helped a lot. I do consider that i have a definite edge over a fresher. But again, Job hopping was my mistake and i have learnt a lesson and also i might not have all the required documents apart from joining letter and pay slips. Would appreciate much needed help. Thanks
I have done B. Tech in Computer Sc. (78 %)from a government engg college of good repute. I have 11 yrs of work experiance. My age is 33. I just want to discuss my profile with all of you.Presently I working on a techno-administrative post in central government as Sc-C, doing both technical & administrative work. Now I wanna do MBA (Finance) either from India or abroad. After MBA want to do job in some developed country for 4-5 yrs ...Canada, UK, US, Australia.Preferably in Canada. I dont think in India I would be able to get admission to top 5 institute. But yes I can manage to get in top 10. In case of abroad, I dont have much extra curricular activities in my bag. I only know meditations, stress buster techniques, chinese techniques for stress buster etc.Philoshy related things.Interest in chess, cricket etc.In college times sub-editor of a college magzine.Good interest in stock market & earns handsomely in that.In case of abroad I will have to spend 15-16 lacs. I only have maximum 7-8 lacs with me.which is again hard earned. Some people told me that Indian MBA is not recognised in Canada. Then in that case should I try to manage funds anyhow & to do MBA from abroad preferably one year MBA??? or should I do Indian full time MBA. then think of going to Canada etc. Pls guide me.???So that I may make up my mind to prepare for CAT or GMAT 2011 accordingly.I am very-2 confused. ??? regards,
Please suggest me what should i opt for. which will be best suited for me according to my job profiles of past. please
Seeing your profile and almost equal cost as said by you in all the courses.... i would suggest to go for SAP ... It will help you in rebuilding your career as well as it has great opportunities to offer.
Hello puys, I am a CAT 2010 aspirant. I have 12 months of experience.
Buddy,
You can mention all the work experience which you have in the application forms ... But, having only salary slips and joining letter might be small difficulty... you atleast need to have relieving letter from the companies where you worked . You do not need to worry a lot about job hopping because as far as you can justify it in interviews, it is perfectly ok.
Pls guide me.???So that I may make up my mind to prepare for CAT or GMAT 2011 accordingly.I am very-2 confused. ??? regards,
With your profile ... i would suggest to pursue MBA from abroad and not from India .. though, it is going to be comparatively expensive in abroad, but the returns there for someone like your profile will be better in long run .
If i would have been in your shoes, i would have gone for GMAT and as far as high fee is concerned, these days getting loan while pursuing MBA from some reputed college whether in india or abroad is not that tough.

Your school and college marks are good and work exp of 3years would be an added advantage for you.I think you should target colleges which generally comes under top-20(refer pagalguy ranking for this). For marketing profiles all IIMs are good.Apart from the IIMs there are colleges like MDI,SP jain and IMT whose marketing are well respected in the industry and are second best to IIMs.and about the lateral placement thing...dude some companies do consider Experience in any fields eligible for laterals while some companies always consider the relevant experience in the field for which they come for the Recruitment. But don't worry the number of latter companies are less.moreover studying in any IIMs or XLRI,MDI,SP jain and other good colleges always gives you the freedom to negotiate with these companies.and finally- Best of luck for your CAT!!make it BIG!!

is there any such programme..and if it is there then which colleges offer it?
Can u also tell me about the course on energy and environment at SIIB...which wud be better and will my low graduation marks and no work ex affect my selection for these courses....plz help...
Buddy ,
There are many people who are not sure of specialization even after 1 year in B-School... so, if you are facing any issue, its completely ok.. no need to worry a lot π
Anyways, seeing the query i feel that you are restricting yourself to very specific specializations like telecom , energy and environment .. It is good to go for these courses but not unless you are very sure what you want to pursue as your career.
Seeing your acads, getting into finance or consultancy profiles is bit tough .. but all other specializations like marketing , operations , supply chain management and niche courses like telecom, environment safety , energy and environment... are all open to you. I will suggest to get in touch with people pursuing all these specializations and try to know the expected roles in industry and then correlate these roles with your interests... and then finally arrive at a decision.
And as per your last doubt, acads have different weightages across different b-schools .. so, this depends on b-school where you are applying to.
hi puys,
this is Gurdeesh.. iv done grads in computers...and have learnt Spanish language for 3 years...so would MBA in International Business be the best option for me?
what if i want to go for MBA in PR?
is there any such programme..and if it is there then which colleges offer it?
Buddy, International Business specialization is not just about knowing foreign languages... it is more about understanding global economics ... how business runs across different nations....trade policies etc and with everything going towards globalizations... it has become more about where you can produce at minimum and where you can generate maximum revenue... this is a very brief snapshot of international business... you can know more about international business here International business - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and all the managerial aspects covered will come under this specialization .
Also , PR is again a niche course... with institutes like XLRI , TISS, MDI , SCMHRD ruling the arena ... also there are institutes which provide specialization in HR on the basis of electives you opt for .
