Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Hi,

Maybe the subject i will attempt to broach has already been brought up, (maybe even numerous times) so i will be very thankful if i am directed to some of the existing discussion threads.

If not, i would be grateful for a reply, coz this is the time to apply to different b schools and i am really in a dizzy. and on a tight leash too.

I am not from an engineering background ( and hordes , i literally mean hordes of them ( no offense intended offcourse) swarm the coaching centre and mouth words like roi and ranking and stuff and scare the bejesus out of me. )

i am not really interested in the iims. ( hope i havent just managed to ostracise myself on this community.)

i dont really have any particular fondness for quants, what with some ugly episodes in my formative years.

i am not a big fan of placements and salary figures either.

i literally prize job satisfaction over anything.

i would more prefer a place like mica.

so i was hoping all u seniors and mba pundits can shed some light
on some of the b schools i can try for if i am not nearly as optimistic abt the cat outcome. ( i give it on nov 22nd)

i was very dissapointed when i read on pg something to the effect that i need 85% in CAT to apply for MICAT.

are there any b schools similar to mics or offering similar specializations with a good faculty set and lower expectations from competative exams.

sorry for the long post.

awaiting
cheers

Sam

From your post, I can gather that your English is better than the average Joe. This means that if you try even a little bit, you can get a good score in the VA section. If you manage to score in the 97-99%ile range in VA, and score even somewhere around 90%ile in either DI or QA, you will more than clear the cut-offs of most colleges.

Judging by your interests, I would suggest you check out TISS too.

Another college that would interest you is Delhi School of Economics. Although DSE is better known for its MA Economics program, it also has a couple of management courses. While I can't comment on the quality of the education, faculty, pedagogy, etc. at DSE (being a part of DU, it should be good though), what I can tell you is that DSE is a great place to be for a creative person who wants something more out of his life than just high packages. DSE is right in the heart of DU, and the place is brimming with intellectual energy. Some of the brightest would-be artists, writers, intellectuals have made the DSE campus their haunt. If its inspiration you want, you would definitely find lots to love here.

Finally, as someone who isn't interested in pay packages either, I can tell you that you aren't alone. There are other people in this country too who value things that can't be easily quantified. So before you jump into this circus called 'MBA', try to really understand your reason for doing one in the first place (I, for the record, am doing one to facilitate entrepreneurship). Once you get the answer to this question, you will find it a lot easier to know the direction of your travel.

am not sure if its the right thread to as this question. but suppose i want a run and own an restaurant(yes i do!!) will an mba from iims or other top b-schools help??(or is there a field specific b-school for this)???

An MBA from a B-school may help you but it would be better to start and learn the nuances on your own. Also, courses in hotel management is also there, but I have no idea about its worth.

If you want to start-up, you can choose a franchise business. Sometime back on some business news channel they were talking about TeamIndia Managers. They help setup startups. The ratio of sharing I think they mentioned was 75%-20% between Team India and the entrepreneur. They also give a monthly salary to the entrepreneur till the business starts earning profits. I think they may help you.

I searched their website. Have a look:- Team India

I am not really sure about the motivational part, but it is important to determine the weaknesses of an individual first to identify what intrinsic character of the individual needs to be motivated.

You can use FIRO-B or Transactional Analysis to determine what traits the individual is strong/weak at.

In practice HR does not focus on individuals. In rare cases HR is involved in career planning and helping in changing departement, location to accomodate personal reasons. Other point when HR gets involved at an individual at a personal level is when there is a decision to fire someone. Then Hr will have lot of discussions with the manager who wants to fire and the employee and explore whether there is valid cause.

Other than that the following global initiatives are undertaken
1. Cultural programs, parties, community meets.
2. Brown bag lunches with senior management
3. Reward and recognition programs.

Hello Puys..

I have taken admission at Sterling Institute of management studies, nerul dis year thru MHCET CAP III round. I was getting calls from Bharti Vidyapeeth Institute as well....but as per DTE rules we'd get our fees back only after seat fulfillment.. so there was a huge risk of fees refund. So i decided to continue wid sterling..as i thot both are somewhat of same level as far as placements go... . Hope i have taken right decision.

I have got 3 years of experience in pharma sales.. which mite be useful in the future acc to me.

Now comes my queries.. Do all the institute under DTE have same syllabus for MMS (including JB, Sydenham, dalmia etc)? Do all the institute have same exams pattern?..How do I approach bigger companies for better summer placement? Can I directly ask MNCs by myself?..How can I approach companies out of india for summer placement?..Also what kinda job i can expect in the future in pharma or outside pharma (like in FMCGs n al)?.......

I really need some genuine guidance..hope to get seniors' suggestions..

Thanks in advance.

how come nobody knows about elitmus??

If you have believed in yourself and taken a strong decision, you need to back it up with some solid preparation in terms of written tests, GD, PI and also what do you want from an MBA. If you do all this well, the issue of drop year is not such a concern.

However, on the practical side, if you can find some work like working for some social cause or even some part time project, it will not be bad idea as it will be kind of a break to you from your preparation activities.

If you believe that you are good then stop thinking about these stuff. If they will make any difference is still in future so why to worry about it now. Better concentrate on your studies and prove that you are good, very good. 😃

Like banks need MBA's in Finance, like that Technical industries and companies may also need one with a certain kind of specialization!

Based on your education background I would suggest you to go for Dual Specialization in Marketing and Production management. However first year of MBA is common for all students, so take your time and then decide on the final take. You would have got ample amount f experience den as 2 take which specialization.

If you take production mgmnt you may end up in Manufacturing firms. There are many big such firms in India and demand is also High.

GodspeeD !

Sure. IIM-C has a PGDCM thats computer aided mgmt, i think. You might want to enquire about it.

Also many business schools offer MBA in IT/Systems.
Also, many software companies and KPO recruit Business Analyst, Functional Consultants etc.

These are related to understanding the business requirements of the clients and then designing IT applications to suit their needs. These jobs might really interest you.
