Hi,
I am software professional with 5.5 yrs of exp in a good MNC in India. I also have an onsite exposure for about and year in Europe.
My schooling aggregate is:78%
Intermediate: 82%
Computer Engineering :72% (Distinction)
I want to make a shift in my career and hence want to pursue an MBA.I was a java programmer for 4 yrs and promoted to a module Lead about 1.5 yrs back.
My husband is at onsite for abt 1.5 yrs and due to marital issues I had to join him in US, Hence I had to resign my job. It been 6 months that I am not working and looking at the present circumstances, I feel that we might have to stay there for about another couple of months.
I have just started preparing for GMAT . I couldnt take up MBA for 2011 batch. I am aiming for 2012 batch at any cost.
I basically have 5 queries:
I would really appreciate if someone could answer my queries patiently bcoz I have penned down a vast number of my doubts
1)Will a career gap of 1 to 1.5 yrs impact on my admission in a good MBA college like ISB,SPJain,IIMs .
2)As presently I am at home and I have all the time in the world to take up my GMAT seriously .Will 3 months of intense preparation be enough to crack a gmat for a score of 700.
3)I am not interested in finance or marketing MBA. I basically need a career growth and shift from my current profile (frankly I am bored of coding for so many years) but do not want to make a complete shift by taking a field like HR (want to be in IT industry) .Could any1 suggest a good stream that I can pursue from a good MBA college. I am interested in the profile of a business analyst and supply chain management. But unable to find good colleges which offer these courses
4)I have heard that an MBA from a foreign university costs a lot. I hail from a very middle class family and cannot afford a fee of 15-20 L at all. Will any loans be provided if I try to pursue an MBA from a US university.
5)I am not a part of any NGO. My extracurricular activities involve only swimming ,reading a lol of books and photography. Could any1 suggest what other qualities could I inculcate in me to have an outstanding profile to crack any interview to get into a good MBA college.
Thanking you in advance !
Regards,
Pallavi

Hi Pallavi,
Please find the replies to your queries.
1)Will a career gap of 1 to 1.5 yrs impact on my admission in a good MBA college like ISB,SPJain,IIMs .
No it won't impact anything. You need to defend it in a positive manner.
2)As presently I am at home and I have all the time in the world to take up my GMAT seriously .Will 3 months of intense preparation be enough to crack a gmat for a score of 700.
Yes, it is sufficient and seeing your academics, I don't think it will be difficult.
3)I am not interested in finance or marketing MBA. You can go for IT or Operations or a General Management Course.
4)I have heard that an MBA from a foreign university costs a lot. I hail from a very middle class family and cannot afford a fee of 15-20 L at all. Will any loans be provided if I try to pursue an MBA from a US university.
You can apply for a Bank Loan. Even IIMs, ISB have 10L+ fee structure.
5)I am not a part of any NGO. My extracurricular activities involve only swimming ,reading a lol of books and photography. Could any1 suggest what other qualities could I inculcate in me to have an outstanding profile to crack any interview to get into a good MBA college.
Just work on entrance examination. Your current hobbies and 5.5 years of work-ex is sufficient for you to get admission.

hiii,,,,,i am from mumbai and going through my CET engg admissions ??i have got 107/200 in engg cet and have not got in mumbai ,,,,but hoping i will get it ,.,,,,but if i do join a small city college like finolex (ratnagiri) or nashik coll....will it affect when i give CAT ??? just bcoz mumbai is mumbai ??and mumbai university is also the best here ,,,,,,,,??? so if i do engg from outside,,,,,how to prep for CAT ...and do IIMs take students from tier2 coll or small coll????? will it be a problem?>????plzz reply??
rabhi85 SaysAcademic gap would not b an issue fro getting calls............ Because of so high competition, no IIMs totally depend on the CAT score they also have certain perentage of 10th, 12th n graduation score,(as far as my knowledge goes..).....!!!
I need to correct you here ! IIM Cal n IIM Ranchi, being mentored by IIM Calcutta gives no weightage to academic score !
Have a look at my profile in my signature(have work ex too) and it played no role in my selection at IIM Ranchi

but if i do join a small city college like finolex (ratnagiri) or nashik coll....will it affect when i give CAT ???
---> only thing which will affect CAT exam is ur prep...rest things come into picture in GDPI stages..
how to prep for CAT
---> refer to other threads of pagalguy
do IIMs take students from tier2 coll or small coll
---> What makes u think people from tier 2 or small college cant make it???? When u clear the cutoffs of the most difficult exam like CAT, definitely u have better mental capabilities comparable to those of TIER I colleges (as a matter of fact just being in TIER 1 college is not good enuff, not everybody in TIER I college is Extraordinary)...
JUST CONCENTRATE on CAT..if u clear it there r many threads on GDPI to help u out....
If u dont clear it, there are other exams thru which u can get into some of good colleges...
Hi,
Maybe the subject i will attempt to broach has already been brought up, (maybe even numerous times) so i will be very thankful if i am directed to some of the existing discussion threads.
If not, i would be grateful for a reply, coz this is the time to apply to different b schools and i am really in a dizzy. and on a tight leash too.
I am not from an engineering background ( and hordes , i literally mean hordes of them ( no offense intended offcourse) swarm the coaching centre and mouth words like roi and ranking and stuff and scare the bejesus out of me. )
i am not really interested in the iims. ( hope i havent just managed to ostracise myself on this community.)
i dont really have any particular fondness for quants, what with some ugly episodes in my formative years.
i am not a big fan of placements and salary figures either.
i literally prize job satisfaction over anything.
i would more prefer a place like mica.
so i was hoping all u seniors and mba pundits can shed some light
on some of the b schools i can try for if i am not nearly as optimistic abt the cat outcome. ( i give it on nov 22nd)
i was very dissapointed when i read on pg something to the effect that i need 85% in CAT to apply for MICAT.
are there any b schools similar to mics or offering similar specializations with a good faculty set and lower expectations from competative exams.
sorry for the long post.
awaiting
cheers

thanxxx guys,,,,,,for the answers.....i also wanted to know what is {second shift engg} one is part time i.e. after 6 pm ..in few coll .....but second shift is 2 to 8:30.,....what is this ....is it the same value of b.tech???? i mean do we have to mention in profile??? as it is not part time???
Hi,
I am interested in a career with consultancies.
Can someone tell me what exactly do consultants do...like I have read on paper financial consultant and marketing consultant etc build strategy to rake in capital and use it and devise strategy for marketing a product respectively but ON ground what would a Mckinsey or a L&T; or an Accenture professional be doing??????????
What are the job duties and profiles of these consultants...do these big 4 hire both financial and marketing consultants?
In the range of 95%ile, which would be a good college (not hoping for a Mckinsey obviously) if one wants a career in a consultant firm specifically....??
Thnx in anticipation.

I am taking a wild guess here and naming a college which you would not have even heard of (in all probability)
If you are not interested in CAT too much and want to give wings to your aspirations then may I suggest IWSB, Noida.
The CAT score is not too high (60-70%), No compulsory work ex, 5.5 L tution fee, excellent faculty (check on their website..you will come to know) and they recently shifted to a new campus which I have heard is amazing.
I have a friend studying there currently and I have heard really positive feedback about this college. The ideology and pedagogy are excellent as far as I am concerned (personal opinion)
If you are not into packages..not into CAT score etc...this is one college that you should definitely consider.
P.S. I am in no way related to this college...just vouching my opinion.

Hi all,
I am your typical Indian IT male who is seeking a transition into the finance domain. Unfortunately i do not know anyone personally who is connected to this domain.
My basic problem is that i do not know from where i should start learning more about the field. If there is anyone on this thread who is an Expert or someone who is in a pursuit similar to mine, then please advise on how i should go about learning the fundamentals of finance....
Books and weblinks of the same will be most helpful.
Thanks,
Mangesh 😃

Hi Bhai,
Just search ' investopedia for beginners' on google... you will get a good material to read about fin basics.... especially, to start off, basic knowledge of accounting is required... like journals, ledgers, balance sheet, cash flow, fund flow, cash book etc .... you can find material on them easily through google. Though a manager does not need to work on these in real , but he needs to have knowledge of all these to interpret the data ... so, almost all B-Schools start with this 😃
If you still find any difficulty in getting material, let me know... will forward you all material i have.... it is in GBs, so cannot mail you all .. but will mail you the required part 😃
All the best
Varun

I think going through this thread would give you some idea about consulting:

Personally i think its a very bad idea to drop from your job and prepare for MBA unless you are really serious and have the ability to convince interview panels at MBA admission about the reason for leaving your job...Rather than leaving job, focus your efforts on managing time and see if you can squeeze in 2 hours daily for the prep efforts..get it going for more than a couple of months and then introspect on your preparation and when it would work for you or not..If its not working and you are desperate to do an MBA and your job no longer interest you, then it would be better to quit and prepare..
I am having 2+ years of work ex- with a MNC earning 5lac per annum.. Is it advisable for me to drop from my job n continue preparing for CAT or Shall I continue being in my job.. I Want to do an MBA, but my confidence levels are extreemely low...
Kindly advise, which option do i need to chose for?????

Agree with 21guns...not advisable to drop out and prepare. Panel might take this as ur weakness as in NOT ABLE TO MANAGE TIME, CANNOT MULTI-TASK etc
