Hi Sir,

I would request you to explore the Option of GMAT more than any other examination...
ISB, Hyderabad is really gr8 option

hello...I am selected in TCS and Patni computers and Mahindra satyam but I'm unable to decide which one would be the best option for me..also I have got interest in Finance..and TCS guy was telling me that people do change their domain during their tenure in TCS..is it possible?
I have also joined an Mba college but want to have some experience before doing Mba(finance).Since I haven't received the joining date from any of the three yet..so took admission for a backup..but now I am confused where to proceed because I have got mixed reviews from everyone about doing job.

In my opinion TCS would be the best among the three. Where have you joined for MBA? If it is a good college, then complete your MBA otherwise prepare for CAT and join some good B-school and till then work with TCS.

If money matters to you then you can decide on whichever amongst the three is paying well.
Hi

Background:
I am BTech in Computer Science with MBA in Marketing from Tier II college (Majors: Marketing, Minor: IT).

I have ~1yr of work ex as a S/W Engg in a small time firm (~10-15 ppl) post BTech. Post MBA I was working with a KPO for ~2.5yrs as a Process Mgr.

As a Process Mgr I was involved in Service Delivery, Operations, Analytics, Process Transitions, Business process reengineering etc. Salary ~9.5 lakhs p.a.

Present Status:
Due to personal reasons I had to shift to Bangalore (frm Mumbai). I joined one of the top IT companies (European MNC) as a Transition Manager. I had to take ~2 lakh salary cut when I joined this firm since this was a move out my desperation to reloate to Bangalore.

Problem:
1. What exactly is the career path of a Transition Manager in an IT firm?
2. I have heard about roles like Biz Analyst, Associate Consultant etc...how does Transition Manager fare along side them?
3. If I am looking for a switch 2-3 yrs down the line, which are the other companies that have Transition Mgmt as a established function (I dont think Infy or TCS has something similar...)

Request you all to please help...

Thanks in Advance

Puys, can someone please help me with this?

I don't know much about Transition Management, but since no one was replying, I thought it is better to reply.

You can check here:-

transition manager in IT - Google Search

I think every BPO has a post of transition manager. Not sure about any companies. It would be better if you ask this question on LinkedIn, I think there people may know about this.
What is the diversity in your academic background?

Yes, you can get into IIMs or any other B-School of repute. It is how you handle the question regarding GAP of 5 years between XII and Graduation.

thank you so much friend. can academic gap be a reason for not getting gd/pi calls from IIMs?? any idea? which IIMs consider only CAT score ?

No, I don't think that 5 years gap will matter for calls. All the IIMs give good weightage to CAT score. Don't worry. Prepare well.

Academic gap would not b an issue fro getting calls............ Because of so high competition, no IIMs totally depend on the CAT score they also have certain perentage of 10th, 12th n graduation score,(as far as my knowledge goes..).....!!!

Agree with rabhi85. But weightage differes from IIM to IIM.

To summarise what I found here:
Transition manager migrates the function or process from donor location and organisation to the outsourcing organisation.

He/she needs to have:
a. project management skills
b. excellent communication skills
c. cross-cultural skills

Transition manager is involved right from the outsourcing decision being taken. He is also involved in creating a financial case for the decision.

Dude, if you'd joined B.Tech right after college, you would've had a 4 year gap. Most people drop for an year, so they have a 5 year gap anyway. I'm dead sure that at least 30% of kids in IITs have a 5 year gap too, so don't worry.

For the record, I have a 5 year gap too, that too after doing a 3 year degree. Just that I have valid reasons for the gap (went abroad, came back because of the recession), so unless you were sitting at home watching TV, you shouldn't have a problem with the gap. Its taken for granted in our culture that a student will drop for an year after college to prepare for exams.

Hi Puys,

I graduated from NIFT, Bangalore in Fashion Technology last year and have just over an year's experience as Asst. Manager in Production Planning & Control in a small-medium scale garment manufacturing unit.

I quit my job in july and since then, i'm preparing for CAT with a pretty decent mindset to get admission in top 15 b-schools (I really do believe i can get into these).

However, my concern is the AIMCATs (5 nos.) which i've started giving Aug onwards where i'm getting a range of scores right from 55 %ile to 85 %ile till now.

I'm good in Quant and cracked AIMCAT cutoffs in this this section till now..
Decent enough in DI, missed out the cut off on couple of occassion though.
VA is a tough nut to crack for me, missing out on all occassions (to the extent that i got a -ve in the last attempt)

Query 1 - As a test taking strategy is it useful if i take up VA first (so as to pay max. attention to this weakest section) and then DI then Quant ?? or Should it be Quant first (Confidence & OA score booster), then VA sandwiched and then DI??

Query 2 - What percentile is likely to reserve a seat into the desired Top 15 B-schools?? (Considering PG Rankings)

Query 3 - To get that desired %tile, what should be an equivalent % tile target in mind for the rest of the AIMCATs??

Query 4 - Is this an apt explanation to an interviewer for switching over from Manufacturing to Finance?? "Although my work experience involved corely manufacturing planning strategies but i did get a hands on experience in Company's Future & Sales Margin Reports as i was responsible for formulating them on weekly basis. From there on, i wanted to do an MBA in Finance as i was startled to see the kind of variations in the exchange rates, i wanted to learn the basis on which the economy of the country is based" Suggestions are welcome in modifying the explanation but every word of this explanation is true in real life for me.

Please help me out, i'm quite desperate for replies on above queries.
Thanks in Advance.

Answer - You can try this out and any other strategy. If you feel that the strategy you tried is good enough then continue with it otherwise revert or move your strategy to the one that you feel confident in. The strategy will definitely vary from person to person and his comfort level with the stuff.

Query 2 - What percentile is likely to reserve a seat into the desired Top 15 B-schools?? (Considering PG Rankings)

Answer - Anything above 99%ile with cutoffs cleared in all will ensure a call from IIMs. However percentile above 97-98 with all cut-offs cleared is considered safe.

Query 3 - To get that desired %tile, what should be an equivalent % tile target in mind for the rest of the AIMCATs??

Answer - Anyone taking AIMCATs please suggest

Answer - I think if this is true than it is a fair enough reason. Just try to be prepared with questions on the details you furnished in the above answer.

Buddy, he has a gap of 5 years in the sense that he joined a BTech course 5 years after completing his XII.

I think you have a gap of 2 year and not 5 year. Most people have gap of 1 year.

Guys I need a serious advice from you. I am B.Tech compters and having 6+ years of experience in IT field. Got married about a year ago. The situation is that off late I am quite bored of IT career and desperately looking to switch career. The only way out of this that I see is to do a MBA (probably in Finance). I want to do it from abroad to eventually settle down abroad.
My dilemma is that is it advisable to try to pursue MBA from abroad in different field at this stage of life I mean becoming non-earning when you have a wife to take care of and at same time manage expenses of MBA & living abroad. Is this manageable/doable? Should I try it or look for other alternative careers? Please advice.

It is a career decision that needs to be taken by you. Keep in mind that most of the foreign universities doesn't provide placement assistance to foreign students. However, it is worth going for MBA. You can do MBA from India itself from colleges like ISB, Hyderabad. Also, there are many colleges that are running programmes exclusively for the people with experience of 5 years and above like Welingkar.

What are the alternative careers that you were talking about?

Thanks Palak for reply.

I am still unsure of any alternative careers. I think there won't be any in service sector as person with IT knowledge usually don't fit in anywhere else. MBA seems to me the only option to diversify to a new career. Prospects of new business does not looks very ripe in India due to corruption, bureaucracy etc.).

The difficultly I am facing in taking the decision is that should I go ahead to take a risk of getting into non-earning mode and spending millions of rupees in doing MBA at this stage of life (married). Would it be worth all the risk (as such I am earning quite descent now, but at the same time frustrated with IT career)?.

Regarding the question of doing it from India, I am more inclined in settling down abroad (I don't know if it is easy to do so - it's another question).

Thanks again for taking time to reply.

People...
I am an engineering graduate.Average profile.80%+ in 10th,12th,graduation.Did my engineering in 2009.Couldnt get the job offer through campus recuitment as I was in bed rest for 6 months(and that was the only time for my batch when 'decent' companies recruited from my college).Later on got placed in one of the companies which was you know, kind of shit. And after that, was not at all interested in the tech related stuff.
During the last 15 months got 4 jobs(not even a single was good enough). In the meantime appeared for some B school entrance examination, got a couple of calls from top 25,couldnt convert some.Dint join others. And now here I am with no work ex and an age of 23.
It is a possibility that I might jump in the banking field in the near future.(2-3 months)

Doubts:
1.I dont have a wrk ex even after 14 months of graduation(add 3-4 months more). If I appear in coming sesion of entrance exams, and nay I am able to get some certificate(fake one) from an NGO/coaching institute, will it work?I guess not?
2.I am not really interested this year because of no work experience.Even in the coming future,How to justify this blank?
3.Any additional qualification that can just polish my resume if I want to enter finance/banking field.

Regards.

Prospects of new business does not looks very ripe in India due to corruption, bureaucracy etc.).

Try it!! Situation is bad, but you should manage. Be determined. I know many of my friends who have started their own venture and if not great, they are doing fine. At least they have satisfaction that they are doing something of their own.

I am also in the same dilemma. Whether it would be right or not. But there is a senior of mine who has 7 years of experience and had a good paying job in Adobe, who went for MBA this year from SPJain, Dubai/Singapore. If you need his contact details, PM me, I will send you his contact details.

I think countries like New Zealand have relatively easier rules and processes for settling down there. You may want to try there.

Don't ever think of getting a fake certificate. The people who will be interviewing you will grill you and believe me they are not fools. You may land in jail

Why are you not interested? If any case you want to justify, tell the truth.

Prepare well for CAT and take admission in an MBA course. If not interested, then there are courses which you may take like CFA, CA, CWA, etc.
