Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Hello
I am 2010 passout
but in big big dilemma as to go for job or prepare for CAT 10
if i go for job now then how a IT sector job would help me to get into top B school
& if i go for CAT 10 now then how would a one year gap would effect my selections to top B school.

Buddy,

If you are talking about upcoming exam i.e. CAT 2010, then you will be considered like a fresher only as you will just have few months of work experience which is not given much weightage as geneally atleast 1+ year of work ex is considered an addition. So, you can easily go for cat 2010, because work ex won't give you an advantage for this duration.

However, if you are talking about writing CAT next year i.e. 2011, then working in IT industry will atleast improve your soft skills, make you know how to interact with people professionally , hold few positions of responsibility and also the project exposure which will help you in better understanding of atleast the relevant domain.

And if you drop this complete year till CAT 2011, then you will need to justify the drop in interview to the panel with appropiate reasoning. If you reasoning is good enough, then you can make to b-schools coupled with a good written score which will help you in fetching the call as well .

how does b-school interview panels perceive candidates who joined Bank PO after engg.? i'm in final year B.Tech, not placed yet, but will hopefully be placed by the end of final year (placements in my univ. is restricted to 8th sem, phunny!). i was thinking of giving it a shot after graduation if i get some time before joining.

They will consider it as a normal work ex from bank background. It provides you an edge as it will be some different from the normal IT crowd which foes for interviews in PI rounds. However, you will be needed to justify the switch from PO to a B-School in the interview with appropiate reasoning. Also , they will ask you questions regarding work experience as PO.

Hope this helps,
Varun

Hi,

I am sandhya... planning to give cat in 2011. currently working in BMC.. which is municipal corporation for mumbai as junior auditor and will be completing for 1 year in may 2010.... will my experience be counted??

I am weak in quant so are there any classes especially for quant in mumbai

3 cheers:cheers::cheers:
Your experience will count..
Nly guyz working in BPO's.... and working as teachers will not be taken into consideration

Buddy,

Anyone with full time paid work will have the work ex counted .. whether one was working in bpo or was working as teacher, won't prohibit this.

And irrespective of any domain, if you have work ex less than 1 year, it is not given much importance and has least weightage.

Hope this clears the doubt which comes after reading your post.

Not sure if your 1 year work-ex would really count during the GD/PIs but then you'll definitely have an edge over other candidates....at this time you should concentrate only on CAT/XAT or any other exams you'll be giving this year...
first priority should be to crack these exams and then get into these secondary issues...all the very best for forthcoming exams!!
and yes regarding Quant--try "Quantum CAT" by sarvesh kumar verma...that's really a good book!!
guys from mumbai can help you more regarding coaching classes in mumbai!!

Thanks Pal for that link.. Actually I am working abroad and internet is my only source for mock tests and thats why I have put this query. Hope I will get more links on this...I am looking for links in all the areas (QA, DI&LR;, VA&RC;)...

Cheers..

Well...there are many but some good sites are
CAT India Online CAT 2010, CAT 2010 Online, IIM CAT 2010, Online CAT, Mock Test Series
TestFunda ? Leader in MBA Test Prep | CAT,FMS,XAT,SNAP,JMET,IIFT,NMAT,CET
MindInsight Online CAT 2010, All India Test Series for CAT 2010, MBA preparations, Quant, DI, Verbal quizzes, Download CAT papers, Quant problems for CAT 2009, Reading Comprehension, Vocab
*Mindinsight gave 7-8 free mock tests last year for CAT aspirants..do check the site if they've given something like the same this year too!!

honestly, i'm not too keen about PO, but then again its the same with IT. i'm considering it only as an alternative. i know its not as easy as getting placed in IT but still curious.

P.S: core companies don't come to our campus, IT is mai baap here

It is mai-baap in all colleges except for the IITs and top NITs....so majority of lesser mortal guys have no other option other than ITeS..
Bank PO on any given day is better than working for any S/W company and writing codes for the initial 4-5 years of your professional life(my individual perception)...and regarding Interview panel perception,I don't think any bank's PO have lesser chance than any other working guys to get into any good MBA college...rest you're mature enough to take the decision...but remember that working in any PSU's comes with life time job security!!
rest all is your call!!

Buddy,

With due respect to your information and the info posted by you, what you stated might be the criteria of IIM-Bangalore... and no doubt am using the word 'might' because in itself , IIM-B has criteria which has never been demystified 😃 and i know you also cannot disclose it here.

8 months thing again is not applicable to all IIMs as there are IIMs which give 0 in the weightage of work ex if your work exp is less than 10/12 months .. .also, there are other top B-Schools as well in non IIM category which give almost no weightage to work ex less than 12 months .. you will find it when you go through their selection criteria ( if disclosed) or once you go through their selection procedure or through your friends who have gone through it .

PS: Please use multi quote options while replying to multiple queries in a single go... making consecutive posts at a stretch is not preferred 😃 and yea, please avoid coloured fonts 😃

I don't get this idea of not considering work-ex as a teacher or BPO worker.

Does this extend to all aspects of a BPO? If you are a manager at a BPO, I'm pretty sure they would consider that.

Also, why not consider teachers? Aren't all professors at IIMs teachers too? If they were to appear for the CAT tomorrow, would they put in their work-ex as 0 months? What about some of the phodu professors at JNU or DU? Would you consider teachers at St. Stephens or IIT-Delhi who've taught our business and political leaders as without any 'work-ex'?

I'm not sure I understand this criteria. The IIMs need to be a bit more clear about it. How can someone who has worked in his father's business (where he didn't do anything other than sit at home) be considered as having 'work-ex' while someone who actually has a legitimate job gets relegated to the zero work-ex category is beyond me.

Dear Guys,

I am working abroad and I am planning to appear for CAT 2010. I have been preparing mainly with Arun Sharma books. The DI and English seems to be ok for me, I mean its understandable for me. But I am totally stuck with the Quants!!! main reason could be I have been away from the highschool level maths for quite a long time. Its like I am finding it difficult to cop up with the standard of the book. Sometimes I am totally stuck..and I am wasting a lot of time..Can you guys suggest me an alternative book for Quants where I can have all the concepts presented in a much simpler way with good examples so that I can get a fast grasp on the core concepts.. Please help me out guys..

Cheers

Hi Puys,

I graduated from NIFT, Bangalore in Fashion Technology last year and have just over an year's experience as Asst. Manager in Production Planning & Control in a small-medium scale garment manufacturing unit.

I quit my job in july and since then, i'm preparing for CAT with a pretty decent mindset to get admission in top 15 b-schools (I really do believe i can get into these).

However, my concern is the AIMCATs (5 nos.) which i've started giving Aug onwards where i'm getting a range of scores right from 55 %ile to 85 %ile till now.

I'm good in Quant and cracked AIMCAT cutoffs in this this section till now..
Decent enough in DI, missed out the cut off on couple of occassion though.
VA is a tough nut to crack for me, missing out on all occassions (to the extent that i got a -ve in the last attempt)

Query 1 - What strategy can be implemented for VA in particular?? (I generally refrain from doing RCs & attempt Grammar first)

Query 2 - As a test taking strategy is it useful if i take up VA first (so as to pay max. attention to this weakest section) and then DI then Quant ?? or Should it be Quant first (Confidence & OA score booster), then VA sandwiched and then DI??

Query 3 - What percentile is likely to reserve a seat into the desired Top 15 B-schools?? (Considering PG Rankings)

Query 4 - To get that desired %tile, what should be an equivalent % tile target in mind for the rest of the AIMCATs??

Query 5 - Is this an apt explanation to an interviewer for switching over from Manufacturing to Finance?? "Although my work experience involved corely manufacturing planning strategies but i did get a hands on experience in Company's Future & Sales Margin Reports as i was responsible for formulating them on weekly basis. From there on, i wanted to do an MBA in Finance as i was startled to see the kind of variations in the exchange rates, i wanted to learn the basis on which the economy of the country is based" Suggestions are welcome in modifying the explanation but every word of this explanation is true in real life for me.

Would request top notch Puys to help me out with above queries.
Thanks in Advance.

Hi guys,

This is my first post here.

I am an engg pass out 2008, currently working in a reputed market research company as a senior analyst leading a small team. Work ex wud be 26 months in sept. I am preparing for my CAT and all other entrance exams with an aim at cracking xat eventhough any other exam will also be good.

I am bored with my job and thinking of quitting as not getting enuf time for prep. I had a few question:

1) Is this too late in the day to quit and study? If i put in my papers now i will leave by oct 1st week and wud have a 1.5 months for prep for cat and iift. I have joined coaching class but my mock scores are horrible as i dont prepare. I had given cat last time and got 90 (99 VA, 44 QA, 87 DI)

2) Since i stay alone in mumbai i need some cash too to go by the 3-4 months and i have little savings. So is it better to have a part time job or does it not work out? Also are there any such jobs which are pay decent but dont take too much time and mental energy?

Please advise guys.

Thanks
Christoph

Go for Sym. I heard this is good.

Hi.... I'm planning to pursue MBA through distance learning..
I'm confused between Symbiosis & IMT....
Can anyone suggest me which one should i go for.......

Hey Sagar,

Take a Sample Test and analyse your score. If you are good at quants no need to join for Class room coaching. Else you can start your preparation for CAT-11 right now. Attempt CAT this year and see where you stand.

Good Luck for your CAT journey. All the best
