Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Answering to HawaldarFoobar:

Forging the first job's papers is fine as most organizations only ask for your last pay slip and your last 3 months bank statements. But how will you do it, if you have a fool proof method then please let me know :)
But I still think that it is risky. Why did you take the break - health problems , family obligations , preparing for CAT etc. Tell them the reasons.
As far as 2009 was concerned, that was a tough year for everyone, so it is understandable that you took some time off. It is funny that the guy talked about taking a break after 1.5 years; cos in call centers the attrition rate is so high that very few people stay even for a year.
I think that you should focus on your technical and aptitude part and the rest will follow. Answer the HR guys with confidence 😃
Hey Puys,

I am an indian student with a Bachelors degree from a top UK institute. I am looking to find jobs back in India (preferably Delhi). Since iv hardly lived in India, I am a bit unsure on how to approach this job hunt. Do you guys know of any recognized job agencies/headhunters who specialize in Indian students with foreign degrees. I also have 1+ year of work ex...so not exactly a fresher.
Any guidance would be highly appreciated.
Thanks!

Adding on to what birbal13 has mentioned, 2-3 mocks cannot say how good/bad you're. Your scores over a period of time can be used to gauge your performance, because only then you can pick out a pattern and find out which areas you lack in. 3 months is a lot of time to bring up your performance. Take 1-2 mocks per week, and analyze each one properly to find out weak links and keep working on it to improve. You'll need to spend 2-3 hours daily for the prep.

And placements are not a big deal. Trust me. When you prepare for CAT your aptitude test skills improves. Don't get tensed about placements but don't ignore it also. But I think you can afford to concentrate more on CAT prep if you're serious on MBA. So basically set your priorities - MBA or job, and give due importance to whichever is more important to you at the moment.

ATB. :cheerio:

hi all i would like to ask a question relating to biotech which i had posted as a separate thread but now after reading the pg rules think that it would be more appropriate to post it here. so my question is that should i pursue my b.tech in biotech at nit-raipur. i intend to do mba after my graduation so is it advisable considering the fact that this sector is still in nascent stage in india?

Hey puys,

One my friends says that a certification in NCFA or CFA L1 will help me to get into Fin at a top b-school. Is it true??
The prob is that I am working with an IT company and prep for CAT. Wont these certis be a overburden? Or do the studs who do Fin @ IIMs have such certis?

Thanks

Yes it do helps if one carries such certificates. CFA L1 is a better certification. NCFM doesn't have much weightage. Well let me tell you not only in IIMs but also in many MBA instis students have/study for CFA/CWA.

Dear Friends, I have some general queries regarding the pattern of the CAT 1.What is a cut-off limit/mark? 2.What is the cut-off limit for each section (namely QA, DI&LR;, VA& RC)? What is the importance of a cut off in each of them? 3.What are the total number of questions in CAT and what is the total allowed time (Is it 90 questions and 150 minutes?). Approximately how many questions from each section? 4.I read in a book that for students who are weak in QA(maths) and strong in English, the best thing for them to do is to make VA& RC their strongest section , DI & LR their second strongest and to clear the cut-off in QA(Again, there is a need to know about cut off). Can someone explain this comment? Hope that the above queries can be answered by you. Thanks Ishak

Hiii..

First of all thanks for providing such wonderful piece of information...i done with Bachelor of business management this year with 76%..and my 10th and 12th score is 79% and 65%...and while doing my graduation i got campus placement from Nokia and i worked them for a period of 8 months in marketing & branding Section....so my experience is it valid or not...since i got it in between my studies will IIM's accept it or not..i got experience certificate everything for it...and is my scores enough to fetch a seat if i score good in CAT...am in big dilemma need your help....for past 3 months after my graduation i didt went for any job...as i want to do MBA from my dream institute IIM-B...but shocked:-( that even getting 99.4 you didt get call from IIM-B....now am i aiming too much with my capacity...help me....and regarding extra-curricular activites...sports,quizes,olympiads.NGO's,TV Shows everywhr i tried and participated and have certificates of them too..is it an added advantage????...help me brother..

@firezone:

One of my friends who got through IIM B was ICSE Topper, Quizzer and throughout topper in University during BTech. Well he'd 99+ his acads were attractive. But IIM C,.. and one more IIM send percentile based calls. XLRI and MDI also send percentile basis.

My advice: focus on CAT, SNAP, XAT, NMAT, (IRMA/JB/SIMSREE/IIFT)

Don't target only IIMs, targetting Top 20 will be good for you. 😃

1. & 2. Cutoffs are decided according to the difficulty level, both for individual sections as well as for overall. If a section is easy (i.e. most people find it easy), then obviously its cutoff would be high, else its cutoff would be low. Its purely relative.

3. Total number of questions normally vary in every year or two. Last year, the computer based CAT had 60 questions to be attempted in 150 minutes, 20 questions per section.

4. The comment you heard makes sense but then you need to know how much is enough to clear the cutoff for QA (or your weaker section), which in itself is pretty tough and I would suggest that you don't try figuring out the cutoff by just looking at the paper. Many people try to do that and I think it's nothing more than a waste of time.

PS: The next time you post a query, please space it a bit. Becomes easier to read.
Hi Puys,

My profile :

I graduated with a degree in IT engineering in 2009 from Pune University. I managed to get a job off campus where I was hired as an Trainee Software Developer in a start-up . I started working there but my job was more of QA where I would test the mobile games developed and also ported them from J2ME to Android to some extent.
I quit my job after a few months as I was not interested into regular programming (my technical skills are between average-good, not a fundoo programmer though) and took a sabbatical of 6 months from work. During those 6 months I got my foot into one of the Big 4's Risk Advisory services as an Analyst. Now its been more than 3 months that I have started working with Big 4. My work here is to perform Internal Audit, prepare Standard Operating Procedures, review internal controls of a given business process (nothing related to programming). At times I also sit in the office warming up the chair and continuously go through posts/threads/articles on PG or do some clerical work like assisting a senior in documenting the Internal Audit report, making ppt, drawing flow-chart for the given process etc etc...

I am in Industrial & Consumer products team & the industries we work with are mainly Automotive(Merc, Endurance Tech etc)/Manufacturing (Kirloskar,Jain Irrigations etc)/ IT (very very rarely)

The pay is too less- 15k....13.5k in hand. Took up this job as it would give me broad knowledge of various business process of an industry. The career path is
(generally commerce/eco grads)

Analyst------------>Associate.Consultant----------->Consultant-------------->Senior Con.------>Manager... for promotion, the period is generally of 1.5-2yrs
(not thinking beyond this,as I am planning for an MBA 2-3 years down the line, preparing for GMAT)
.

Coming back to the crux:

I have been thinking of various certifications that I can pursue considering my background, the work that I am doing currently, my future plans, the growth prospects, cost, duration and ROI... A few courses that come to my mind are:-

6 sigma certification -

  1. what's the duration/cost of this course ?

  2. I heard its more suitable for Mech.engineers as it mostly deals with the production industry...is that true ?

  3. What are growth opportunities if I complete certain levels of this course ?

  4. Which are the best institutes ?

CFA- which will help me move in the finance domain of any industry, especially i-banks etc.

Well, these are the only 2 i could think of before doing an deep research, can you suggest some other courses other than the 2 mentioned above ?? ... I want inputs from experts who can give me a brief answer to my question or direct me to the right source for the same. One thing that you would ask me is about my interest etc etc... well, I don't know how to put it in words... I am trying to know more about work done in various sectors, across various functions..

I too dream of being into the top 3 consulting McK/BCG/Bain as an undergraduate or just dream about joining an i-bank though I am not from IIT... but I am trying to develop skills and thinking beyond these companies.

All said, I want some expert people who have completed these courses/are working in an industry/ moderators to throw some light over here. Also, please do not post (especially moderators) a reply stating that you're closing this thread and direct me to some other thread asking me to post my query there, its very hard to get a reply at earliest
and the post goes unnoticed.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Starwlker

PS: I've posted the same question @ http://www.pagalguy.com/discussions/what-courses-can-i-pursue-25056969

I am Computer engineer 2010 passout
Don't have a job
want to pursue MBA
but in big big dilemma as I am currently staying at jabalpur and offcampus are begin organizing at pune ,bangalore etc so I have to leave home but as only 2.5-3 months are left for CAT 10
People say you must not ignore Job opportunities as CAT is not reliable (I am also agree with them as at CAT 09 my computer didn't run)
now if I leave home then it would take some time to settle down,so if I go to new place my CAT preparations may be effected .
so should I move to new place now or after appearing for CAT & all Exams till DEC; but from DEC job would be not easy.
as per mine opinion I must first look for a job & then give my best shot for CAT if time left for CAT.

Thanks a lot Avinav for your inputs..

Hi I have done btech in electronics and telecom and now working in a good company since 1 yr. I want to pursue MS in my feild, but I have been hearing that doing mba would be better. How good is the scope after doing MS? After MS, will the growth be slow in a comp? Is it really difficult getting good package or top positions in companies after doing MS as compared to mba? I am more inclined towards the technical side like r&d.; Also how good is the scope in India after MS. Can someone please guide me on these issues? I have come across some other threads relating to this issue but was not able to find answers to my satisfaction..Thanks.
