Hey guys
i want to pursue MSF course abroad
1. I am a student of Bits-pilani goa campus, Msc. Economics with dual B.E in chemical engg, will finish my studies in 2011 with a cg of 6.26
2.My cg being on the lower side, what gre/gmat score could get me a good school.
3. As being from bits, i would have 1 two month and 2 six month internships. 4. As far as the finance work-ex is concerned, does an entrepreneurial venture count?
5. Would publishing of papers help my cause ? Regards
What are Benefits of work Ex as i am Computer science Engineer want to pursue MBA-HR.

Well...a good work-ex(more than 1+years) would definitely help you, not only during the GD/PIs but also during the placement process

.See many colleges follow lateral placement process where companies come exclusively for work-ex guys but then it depends on the college to set the work-ex limit. Some does consider 12 months and some more than 15 months of experience as eligible for lateral placement process.Anyway if the college doesn't follow lateral placement process, you can still bargain for the profile and CTC.
Red_Bull SaysSome does consider 12 months and some more than 15 months of experience as eligible for lateral placement process.
Most B-schools that I know of, set around 22-24 months as the criteria for laterals.
can B.TECH graduate in INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY seat in West Bengal School Service?
I have done my B.E.(CSE) this year in june
now I am in big dilemma as I should prepare for CAT 10 or go for the job People says it would be better to do PG now because with MBA your career growth would be better.
but now only 2.5-3 months are left for CAT 10
and I would have 1 yr gap if i go for CAT ,will it going to effect as per selections to top 20 B schools.
I have some other doubts as
my friend did scored 99.3%ile in CAT 09 but didn't have any IIM call(as fresher with GEN category).:banghead:
but a saw in a thread at pagalguy that a guy with 3 yr work exp at IT got 3-4 IIM calls a 85-86%ile.
so work exp. can help in these ways also??.
My mind is going towards the job as very less time left to prepare now .
please guide me & tell me facts.
Thanks in advance.

The person with the work ex could be of some other category other than general. Work ex does help but not too much of an extent. It all depends on the weightage given by the college.
I would suggest you to go for CAT. Prepare full on for the remaining months, then once you are done with CAT and other exams, go for a job. In case you get calls, great, if you don't do well, you can always continue with your job and try again.
Hi Puys
Query 1 :
I am having 2.5 Yrs experience in a top indian IT firm. I did attend the interview of another IT firm and got thru with their first round(Technical Interview). In another couple of days I will be having PM interview and HR interview as telephonic interviews. What sort of interview is this PM interview. Can someone who has experience with PM interview guide me ?
Query 2 :
I decided to quit my job and prepare for CAT. As per that plan i will be quitting infy in another two weeks. Just for backup, I attended interview in L&T; infotech and got through their first round. I have PM interview and HR interview scheduled.(Most probably I ll get through in these 2 rounds). And they are ready offer me a very high pay package(atleast to my standards). They are asking me to join ASAP. And they are ready to buy-out(Pay my notice period salary) me from my present company, when i told the notice period is three months considering the preparation time for CAT(where as i will be out in another two weeks). Please suggest what shall i do now ?
Should I reject their big offer and focus on CAT preparation ? Or accept their offer, join in september so that I can prepare intensively for CAT for one month ?
I am considering not to accept their offer, since I desire to join top B-School this year. So I want to prepare intensively for that?
I am willing to take the offer, since preMBA salary and preMBA positions matter while in placements at the end of 2yrs in MBA. And further, I wont be doing anything and totally free in the gap between CAT and joining B-School.
Kindly suggest me how to go about it. I am in dilemma.
I think the best thing for you would be to think long and hard and take a decision yourself.
Think about what you want in the long run...!!
and..getting a job is way easier than getting an IIM call..!!....

Hey Akshay, I am also in the same situation like you. I have also completed my B.E (CSE) in June. Regarding your problem, it depends on a few factors. Do you have a job in your hand, or you will start the job hunt now?? What was your performance in the last MBA season??
Whatever may be the case, there are still 2.5-3 months for CAT, and you can always start prep.
Work exp. does matter a lot, and it can compensate other factors (like bad grad %age).
So my final word: Do prepare for CAT. Take the shot. And whenever the joining comes, go for the job ex.

First of all dude, do not quit job until you have the second one for SURE in your hand. You never know when life can
.Secondly, you are absolutely right that preMBA salary and positions do matter in postMBA placements. So I think you have the answer yourself? The only question remains is that how much you are confident on taking the CAT, based on your past records and current prep.
You know the answer..... just ask yourself twice.
Hello everybody,
I just passed my CS engg in june and joined an IT firm in mumbai. It has only been 1 month since I joined the firm.I have signed a bond of 2 yrs with the company. Also I gave CAT last year and got a score of 94 percentile, GATE : 94 percentile and GRE - 1330.
The confusion that are storming in my mind are
1:
I would like to do an MBA in finance from a top10 inst but I cannot afford to go on trying for years, so if I dont get it within this yr or next I would take up Masters in my technical field(either here or abroad). I would be giving CAT and other exams this year. So should I keep trying or am I on the correct path ? Please comment
2:
If a break a bond with the company is there any way in which the company can legally come after me ? If the company takes action then does that affect me when i apply for visa(MS) ?
Any suggestions are welcome
Thanks in advance

Well for Q 1, tech and mgmt are 2 different fields, better to go for things which intersets you, doing mbs even form top 20 will be benivfial then doin tech from top 5, if u un area of interst is mgmt
Well AFAIK, you need to pay the money to cpmany, as thn only u can leav it, it will afect u r visa or not, i dont know that

Well...Akshay, if you seriously want to crack CAT with good percentile, stop thinking about these secondary issues:nono::nono:.I mean There are some colleges including some IIMs who gives a lot of weightage to work-experience and profile. Now these are some thing which are not in your hand...are they??
I mean if you've no prior work-ex nothing could be done and obviously yours 10th/12th/Grad percentage can't be changed now!!
So target colleges like IIMC,XLRI,XIMB,NITIE,MDI and others. If you get calls from other IIMs that would be an added joy and opportunity for you!!

and finally one word of advice-

best of luck for your coming entrance examination.

guys please help
I got admission in DU and got placed in two companies...Now I'm confused about which one to join .Though I want to work for few years and then go for masters, people have told me it is wise to go for Post graduation now.
Dear Friends,
I am new to PG. I ask for your advice as to whether or not I am eligible to take the CAT. I got my Senior Secondary education from National Institute of Open Schooling and now I have a BA degree in English from IGNOU. I feel I am necessarily the most unfortunate because I have had to pursue and complete my studies up to the bachelor's degree in no other way than this. After 10th, I had to start working and earn for my family. On average, I worked 10 to 12 hours a day while I was studying for the Senior Secondary and the BA. During these years, I have tried to stay abreast of what is going on in the world of education. I started off as a delivery boy at a pharmacy, then after a number of odd jobs got lucky enough to become a small-time worker with a BPO company, slogged like crazy until I could fill the shoes of a quality analyst at a health information management company. My math and English language skills are fairly good as I keep improving upon them, and I have never stopped dreaming of CAT all the while. Now, I request the advice of all of you.
Thank you in advance

Hi guys, I am finally here. Heard a lot about this forum and I have decided to turn to you guys to really help me out. I have done a lot of research over the last few months. I am looking for a clear career path, as I am a bit confused right now. Any suggestions are welcome. I will tell you a little about my career background and also about my situation, and then you guys could go ahead and give me your ideas.
Career so far:
* B.Tech in IT + 5 years work experience
* Worked in a top Indian fim and also directly in IT divisions of Global banks (total of 3 firms so far), with trips to US.
* Drawing a comfortable salary on par with most tier-1 B school graduates in India
* Running out of firms in India, who are able to even match my current salary. Hence, want to move out of core programming experience and want to expand my horizon.
* always keen on learning and a go-getter
* Technically sound and have quite some exposure to Wealth Management
* Keen on Management consultancy
Restrictions:
* Only working member in the family and need to look after my family (parents and siblings), atleast for the next 2 years.
* Taking off work is not an option, currently, due to above reason
* MBA surely in the pipeline, probably in the UK, once I can gather up the funds. Might take another 2 to 3 years.
* It is difficult with an Indian salary, to save up for a UK MBA. I don't think Indian MBA's would serve my purpose, given the 2 yrs + the fees + opportunity cost + my ability to increase payscale the next 2 yrs.
* Only considering a 1yr MBA, for better ROI and reduced opportunity cost.
* 90% firms in the IT sector are not able to match my salary and I have grown weary of the IT field.
Immediate future:
* I am actively looking for some international exposure right now, probably in AUS, NZ, Singapore, and in the Asia Pacific and this should come through by Dec 2010. If that is a success, I wouldn't mind starting off in a new career path, once I am there.
* Since, professionals moving to another country, anyhow start with the basic salary, I would like to have some certification in hand, just to try out for another path, and to guarantee myself job in multiple areas. (Both in the certificate field or my core technical field. Making enough money in the next 2/3 years to finance my MBA, is the sole purpose).
* If I do go ahead with an MBA, is the preMBA salary taken into account, during placements?.
* Please can you give me suggestions, as to what certifications would be of use in my case. Would passing a level1 CFA, be of use, say, If I were to move to Australia and try for a job there. I wouldn't mind even if it was for a junior post.
* Are there any other certifications, that you guys could recommend, (not PMP, this is back to IT), that is of value in the Australia/NZ, etc. ( I am fixing AUS/NZ, as I have some family there and accomodation could be a lil easier. visa issues, I could sort them out next, once I decide how the opportunities are)
* Do you guys know of any courses/certifications, that could get me an entry level job in management consultancy. Investment banking is only the second choice, as I have friends saying that iBankers literally have no personal life. If it had to be an iBank, then I would prefer to move later into Branding or MandA.
Sincerely awaiting your valuable suggestions,
Signing off,

As heart-wrecking your story is, the unfortunate part of the Indian MBA is that it is completely quantitative and not qualitative at any point of the induction process. Its a negative rejection process rather than a positive selection process. This in turn means that they can't give a person as hard working as you any advantage simply because they don't have that check and balance in place in that way.
The only ray of hope here is that you get a really high score in what ever management exam you decide to take and then try to convince the panel
The only odd part is that most panels either can't do much about your situation or may look down upon you for certain reasons. It will only be some panelists who see through the life you have gone through because most of them can only help you by X percent of marks in one part of the selection process. Also, your academic scores (in 10th and 12th) will play a huge role in your selection process.
At this point of time, you can't do much but only work and pray to get a good cat/xat/fms/iift/etc score.
All I can say is don't leave your job even if you have the choice to do so, Work towards a good score and be very proud of what you have achieved in life till date.
I do not know how many years you have worked for, because in sometime, you would be eligible for gmat and I think there is a chance you might get a very very good amount of scholarship given your background if you can prove the same. You might also be eligible for a scholarship in some Indian schools.
Best of Luck.

"Hi guys,
This is my first post on PagalGuy. I went through similar posts but was not satisfied with the answers, so putting it here. A picture of my resume is below -
After graduation joined Company A
Company A:
Tenure - 18 months (1 yr and 6 months)
A gap of Six months after leaving A and before joining B (Was aiming for higher studies but did not work out)
Company B:
Tenure - 18 months (1 yr and 6 months)
A gap of more than 8 months which is going on (Process called off and team was relocated to other state so I resigned)
So far I am not able to convince interviewer why there are two huge gaps in my career. I am giving up now and thinking of showing the tenure of 2 yrs in company A that way at least I can hide first gap and it would be easy to answer about second gap confidently. Will it be serious issue if background checks happen because I will not be faking the technologies I worked or on my salary part. I will only stretch the duration by six months.
Please advice."
Hello Devilish Angel,
Thank you for the reply. Well, I have a little over 10 years of experience. The number of years that I have been with my current employer is 5 years 5 months. This is a big healthcare IT company based in Washington DC, and I am proud to say I am an independent contractor working for them from India. They did not let me go when I quit my job at their India development center. Please enlighten me more about the opportunity I may have in the form of GMAT. Thank you once again.

Answering to HawaldarFoobar:
And how do you intend to stretch the first duration by six months ? Will you forge documents or what ?
- yes tampering with the date of leaving.
Did the second gap happen during recession time ?
- from Nov 2009 to still going on
How many interviews have you had?
- So far only 4.
I am getting few opportunities because my experience is in BPO/KPO and I want to switch to Technology. In all this while I was preparing myself to face the technical/software developers interview.
One of the interviewer with a small firm told me that he sees a clear pattern in my way of work that I work for 1.5 years and take a break, etc.
